I hear ya man. I knew coming into MK1, it would be with an open mind. Kameo system? Neat, I’ll see it as a positive for the variable combat. By the end of the story and seasonal content, I feel like these Titan Battles are a 1 and done scenario. They gotta pick one at the end to rule again, and just get character establishment and relationships back on track, because KP2 furthers the unhinged, untethered world where you as the player don’t really have a favourite time, character, or setting to enjoy. You bounce between timelines who have different titans, which have hidden motives because they aren’t introduced. Havik? Yea, he’s gonna want the most formidable ruling, but no one else has identifiable motives or alliances outside of good vs evil…but who’s even evil now?
The gender swap…it has to be a 1-off circumstantial thing and the only justifiable situation I see is that Sektor and Cyrax haven’t come to be (though they are present as Kameos?), or that they’ve completely assimilated into AI Suits that Titans can wear…which isn’t exactly a comfort either. Like they’d be the new center piece of power? I don’t see it.
Hopefully appropriate changes happen, because as a returning MK Fan, I’d prefer to stick around, but I know I won’t if the game is less about the fighting and more about complex interconnectivity of limitless worlds and times. That was fun and refreshing during the Avengers, but Marvel had a concrete lineup of story archs and progression over years of invested backstory to pull it off. That’s too much for most of the fan base to bother with here…and that problem doesn’t exist with other straightforward titles like Tekken. I recognize some inappropriate retconning that’s occurred and some variation opportunities that promote better character development, but at the end of the day, no one wants to see their favourite characters retconned out of a reboot of the series while still mystically remaining as a far less significant kameo.
Mk1-8 are obsolete now, as well as every live action MK movie today, including the most recent.
So change genders and stick to it, kill off characters and commit to it, but for the love of the franchise, make decisions with reasonable outcomes that can’t just be magically reversed because of a new DLC drop or title that describes “this is a new world, with no consequences, and oh yea, Raiden died, but reincarnated as a young woman, who’s ready to become the new goddess of thunder. Have the kombat kids, sure…they’re there for the newer generation of fans, but create a canonical world for fans to follow and immerse in.
