Hi Shar! That was 30 minutes telling the story of a fascinating lady. I remember Yootha in Me Mammy and yes I am that old.
I always thought Yootha was a beauty and that you don't have to be stunningly good looking to be attractive. I don't know if it was the characters she played but there always seemed to be a sadness behind the eyes. I'm sure had she lived she would have found the role that would have given her the respect she was due. A BAFTA at least would definitely have followed.
Sadly she fell foul of the curse that affects so many in the acting profession. You get the butterflies, you drink to drown them. Then the drink doesn't dull the nerves as before so you drink more. It's that vicious downward spiral you don't even know your riding.
She came from the theatre that was my local, the Theatre Royal Stratford. The people who learned their craft there, Babs, Stephen Lewis, James Boothe amongst others, Yootha was and is in good company. It's nice to See Brian Murphy is still going at 91. Robert Ross hosted an evening with him last year at my local museum but unfortunately I couldn't make it. I would have loved to have a quick chat with him, imagination the stories he can tell!
PS I told the missus once that what interests me in a woman isn't the perfections but the imperfections and that I've always found her fascinating.
It took ages for the bruises to clear up.....😂
    Cheers Shar😊

Well Hello! I’m thrilled you enjoyed the deep dive into Yootha Joyce’s life. Your reflections on her beauty and the hint of sadness she conveyed are spot on-there was definitely something deeply compelling about her presence.
It's interesting to think about how different roles might have brought her the recognition she deserved, and it’s a real shame she never got that BAFTA. The acting world can be so tough, and it’s heartbreaking to see how some actors end up battling their demons. Quite a few do sadly xxxx
It's wonderful that Yootha’s roots were in the Theatre Royal Stratford with so many other greats. And yep, Brian Murphy at 91-what a legend! I’m sure he has some amazing stories, and he lives in my favourite part of the world I believe, the Isle of Wight!
As for your PS, that's a brilliant sentiment! I’m sure the missus appreciates the compliment, bruises and all! 😂 Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for the humour-it really made me smile and I absolutely need that these days! Hope you've had a good weekend xxxx

I haven’t had your videos pop up in a long time Shar, and then this one came into my recommended… just in time for Yootha’s heaven birthday. I forgot exactly how much work and research you put into your videos, it was a delight to watch. My Nan was good friends with Yootha for years, one day they decided to have a walk together on Brighton beach, which is all cobbles as you know. My Nan was pregnant at the time with my mother, she had about 8 weeks to go at that point and wasn’t having much fun trying to negotiate the cobbles. She fell over onto her bum, and couldn’t get up alone… and as cool and almost indifferent that many people think Yootha was, that really wasn’t her true personality… so she was panicking like hell, running around like a chicken with its head cut off, and shouting for someone to get an ambulance, and my Nan was sprawled out on the beach with her arm in the air just shouting “Joy love just help me up!” Apparently Yootha thought my Nan was going to give birth there and then on the beach. 😂 she was seven years younger than my Nan and had no experience of anyone or anything being pregnant! So eventually after attracting a crowd, my Nan drove them over to her place in Horsham and they laughed about the incident all the way. My Nan said “I don’t know why you panicked, the baby doesn’t arrive until April!” This was late February but apparently Yootha was shouting for towels and boiling water because that’s what they all said in the old films, but she said she would have had no idea what to do if anyone had presented her with these things. So they had a lovely couple of hours back at my Nans place, with Yootha telling my grandad what had happened (she always stood up when she was telling a story apparently, and she was so witty she should have tried her hand at stand up) and the three of them were laughing so much their ribs were hurting. My Nan stood up to go to the loo, and said “I told you there was no need to panic, I’ve got weeks to go yet” then went into the bathroom and her waters broke as soon as she sat down… so seconds before she had told Yootha, she walked back into the living room with her skirt wet through and her knickers round her ankles and said “Joy, it’s time to panic!” My Nan and Grandad moved to Derbyshire not long after so the friendship slowly fizzled, as it does, but they were great chums for the ten or so years my Nan lived down there. So thank you for opening a core memory for me, and thank you for the amazing videos! Much love, Dia x

I completely agree-Yootha Joyce was a remarkable and often underrated actress, and her chemistry with Brian Murphy in *George and Mildred* was truly iconic. Their comic timing and the bond they shared on-screen were a testament to their talent and the affection between them. It’s clear from the show and the stories that Yootha was deeply cherished by everyone involved. Your reflections capture her legacy beautifully. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for appreciating the tribute. A big thank you too for taking the time to watch, it's very appreciated xxxx

Absolutely, Yootha Joyce was brilliant in Our Mother’s House! It really does capture the essence of the 60s and offers such an glimpse into that era, especially around Crystal Palace. I'm glad you enjoyed her performance and the film’s setting-it's definitely a standout piece from that time. Another insightful video, thank you so much. Kenneth Williams wrote in his diaries that he shared a flight with Yootha and she was “drinking like a fish” from start to finish. An excellent cameo of hers was in The Pumpkin Eater, totally unnerving (if short) performance, total contrast to Mildred Roper…

Thank you David, for watching and for sharing that interesting anecdote from Kenneth Williams' diaries! I had read that too, Kenneth never candy coated it did he? Yootha certainly had a complex and fascinating life. I agree her performance in The Pumpkin Eater is a great example of her incredible range as an actress, showing just how versatile she was beyond her iconic role as Mildred Roper. I’m glad you enjoyed the video! xxxx

I completely understand. Yootha Joyce and actors like her had such a unique talent and presence that’s truly missed. It’s always hard when we lose such remarkable figures too soon. While the industry changes, the impact they made continues to resonate with us. We can cherish their work and remember the joy they brought into our lives. 😢💔 xxxx

Another fantastic production Shar! She was such a brilliant comic actress but could so easily switch to show a vulnerable side to the characters she played as well. Isn't is sad that so many comics had such sadness and addictions in real life? So glad to have you back and have a wonderful week 😘

Yootha Joyce was indeed remarkable in her ability to blend comedy with vulnerability, which made her performances so memorable. It’s always interesting to reflect on the contrast between the laughter she brought to our screens and the challenges she faced in her personal life. Your support always means a lot, and I hope you have a wonderful week too! 😘 ♥ xxxx

It took ages to watch this, Shar. I don't consider myself old, but I kept having to pause the first half to marvel at the legends she worked with. And also to apply for funeral cover from the television, knowing I can keep the Parker Pen whatever I decide. Man About The House had Spike Milligan, Arthur Lowe and Bill Maynard in it. And the 1980 George and Mildred film featured Stratford Johns, who'd been in The Ladykillers a quarter of a century ealier.
And Lord, Yootha was stunning. 4:17 is in Julie Christie, Liz Montgomery territory.
Another glorious video, and I'm so glad to hear you sounding fit and well. Although do also consider funeral cover from the television. No salesmen will call, you're guaranteed to be accepted and at the end of the day you simply can't put a price on peace-of-mind.

Haha, I’m glad my video gave you such a fun trip down memory lane! It’s amazing how many legends Yootha Joyce worked with-it's like a who's who of classic TV! I love how you paused to take it all in and even thought about funeral cover during the show-talk about multitasking! And yes, Yootha was indeed stunning; she had that timeless elegance that rivals the best.
Thanks for the kind words and the chuckle! And don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye out for that TV offer 😂😂😂😂

Hi Shar, I’m so glad you’ve reworked your earlier tribute to the unforgettable Yootha Joyce. She was yet another of those wonderfully unique character actresses and actors that we really don’t produce anymore. Nor does the system produce writes of the calibre of the past either. Perhaps I’m just getting old and grumpy. In your photograph of the cast of ‘Fings ain’t wot they used to be’ at 8:14 is a young Babs Windsor too.

Hi Mark, it has truly made my day to hear from you! I hope you are keeping well xxxx I’m so glad you enjoyed the reworked tribute to Yootha Joyce. She was indeed a wonderfully unique talent, and it's true that we don’t see many character actors of her caliber these days.In fact, I'd be hard put to name one, but then I don't really watch modern shows. And you're absolutely right-Babs Windsor does make an appearance in the Fings Ain’t Wot They Used to Be and is in the photo. Thank you for pointing that out and for your thoughtful reflections on the evolution of actors and writers. Your feedback always means a lot me! xxxx

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre hi Shar, I’ve been wondering how you got on with sorting out the objection to your last Yootha upload. Since my wife retired we’ve been away a lot and I haven’t taken my iPad with me. But I see you’ve reworked it again! Sometimes you can just feel like the world’s against you when something you’ve worked on so hard is pulled or massively changed at the last moment. Having spent my working life as a designer in magazines, publishing and even television and films it’s all too common. I hope you are well and I look forward immensely to your next production. We’re off on our first cruise tomorrow sand I won’t be allowing the internet to come with me. I send you my very best wishes. Mark.
