Thanks for all the content Scanner. Given that the community for TC is going to be quite small for a while, I think hammering the "build fun, characterful lists" is spot on. Best thing for everyone and the game in the long term is to create an enjoyable atmosphere with dramatic and dynamic outcomes where winning is not the primary end goal. Good luck to us all in this endeavor and best of luck with the channel. Cheers
I appreciate you realizing how many of us are new to the hobby and spending the time to help us. I think there are alot of us that wish this game to succeed, and passing on knowledge as well as recommending us to play for fun is the best way to help.
There's a few game systems with list building mechanics like this where you'll face an opponent before a game and think to yourself "they're either an absolute tactical genius or have no clue what they're doing" and I love that.
I‘m relatively new in the hobby itself and have little to no experience in list building. This video helped me in my decision for a more laid back and sensible approach to list building.
Thank you for covering this topic with a video. I really love the emphasis on " Rule of Cool " and " Having Fun " at the expense of Min/Max'in. I have tried to form a " core " in my list near 500 ducats that has a definitive beat stick and a model that has a " table presence " that forces my opponent to concentrate or attempt to spend too many resources to counter it. letting other less powerful BUT effective units complete the objectives. I use the other 200 ducats to equip and include units I can " plug 'n play " to round out my lists depending upon the scenario we are playing.

I’m new to the game as well and built my 1st warband for a campaign and it was a well armed commander (forgot the name) 2 jannisaries then 7 azabs and while I haven’t played it yet I asked for feedback and the community is great and I got good feedback on what I would struggle with namely armor
Once I have time (my work schedule is killing me at the moment), I'll basically print out the kickstarter warband comps to start and go from there. ie. No thought, just play and learn from there. Easiest way to start in my opinion, especially for those with choice paralysis like me when I basically put waaaaayyyy to much thought into things... especially when I don't really know what I want yet... except Trench Pilgrims. I really want Trench Pilgrims.
Haha, the choice paralysis thing really hits. If anything my favorite thing about Trench Crusade so far is that it seems to be making me focus on just one system instead of 11 of them.
Thanks for the good content Scanner, I hope you eventually do actually make a kitbash video for trench crusade, I really could use it for my varangian guard.
I never got into competitive gaming because it becomes more of a job than a hobby. I prefer the more artistic side of the hobby, so tend to build casual "rule of cool" armies. And since TC is just starting out, I don't need to focus on only one faction since they are so compact at the moment. Can't wait to get my warbands, already started kit bashing a Fallen Templar.
As a moderately old skirmish game player, I tend to build my list with a 7 to 9 model count for the beginning of the campaign without giving too much equipment to one stats line, but prefer splitting out and having a minimum board control to trick my opponent where I want him/her to be. P.s. I found out that stigmatic nuns with anti tank hammers synergize very well with the procession variant generating themselves blessings markers every turn, while obliterating enemy targets....just to throw the idea on the table 😝
As someone who is new to this kind of game, but loves strategy type games, I'm very excited to playtest my Trench Pilgrims warband against my friend who has also never played. Idk what army he will be choosing to build his list but i think my Pilgrims are looking pretty strong. I could be horrible wrong though since I dont really know what Im doing 😂
I have found the magical number (for 900 ducats, 8 Glory) is 9 including mercenaries. I think there is merit in certain lists to hitting 8, almost specifically to steal initiative, and some lists can push 10/11 if you are trying to go wide (I think its possible to play Sultanate Spam really effectively as Azebs are really good value for their statline.) or if you are playing Pilgrams/Antioch with an ammo monk/medic. I like to list build a lot and think im quite good at it if anyone wants to hear my thoughts on other good list building tips iv found (hope im not stealing your thunder)
I've noticed that too, though my experience with actually playing it, is very little. I like the Trench Pilgrims, they are the iconic faction. And I don not understand why someone wouldn't want to run max amount of Nuns.
In 40k I play guardsmen However, I play mechanized guardsmen where artillery and armor is my main force, with 2 or 3 auxiliary infantry. I haven't lost a game against my friends yet lol. I like the smaller size more kitted armies but big enough to contest every major point. Pressure is king of the battlefield, whether it's firepower area of denial or marching forward to lock units into melee combat.
I will be going for fun, following the rule of cool and everything beyond will come with time. I don't really care if I lose or not for when I begin playing. There is after all the greater message that needs to be spread across no mans land. Repent brothers and sisters! The end is nigh! 🙏 Also congrats on the success with the channel, Scanner, it's deserved in my opinion and I fully agree with the aim you have for the channel content.
I played Warhammer for 7 years, never once played a competitive game and was building fun lists (all cavalry high elves, imperial guard lists with over 150 conscripts, haradrim with mumakil in LOTR) until I moved on from the hobby. Never once regretted it. I lost a lot, but when I won it was hilarious and created stories my friends still remember. The competitive games I saw did NOT look fun. Put down an army that makes you giggle. An army that sits on your shelf and whenever you look at it you're like "fuck yeah"
What do you think of this philosophy for a campaign starting warband. Trying to max out (or maxish out) the number of elites in your warband and only picking a select number of infantry so that you can get those infantry you want elite into the elite ranks before you start filling infantry slots with more "mundane" units that don't need to be elite. You want to max out your elites so that they can start earning XP and getting skills from the start. This is what I am going to start a campaign with very soon. It is a New Antioch warband. Lieutenant: Reinforced Armour, Automatic Rifle, Sword, Sword, Helmet, Gas Mask: 168 ducats Trench Cleric: Reinforced Armour, Shield, Submachine Gun, Sword, Helmet, Gas Mask: 159 ducats Sniper Priest: Sniper Rifle, Shovel, Mountaineer Kit: 93 ducats Sniper Priest: Sniper Rifle, Shovel, Mountaineer Kit: 93 ducats Mechanised Heavy Infantry: Machine Armour, Machine Gun, Greatsword, Sword, Helmet, Gas Mask: 171 ducats Total: 684 ducats This is the most elites I can have and they will start getting XP right away and the Mechanized Infantry should get promoted very quickly. Then I can start filling in with Shocktroopers and/or others. I really want to get an Ammo Monk to pair with the Mechanized Infantry to make exploding machine gun rounds.
“You don’t need a 5 model super expensive list” Looks at my Debtors to Mammon, a 5 model hyper expensive list 😭 The moment I get the first ducats expansion I’m adding in 2 troopers
@scannerbarkly It's a New Antioch warband consisting of a Lieutenant with an auto rifle, a Trench Cleric with a shield and submachine gun, and 2 Mechanized Infantry, one with an HMG and one with a Heavy Flamethrower. They all have the best armor (I'm blanking on the name atm) and just about every generally useful accessory in the Church's list. I built the squad for kill games and KotH games where the warband can stay close. If the warband has to split up for map presence, life gets hard.
I honestly don't hate super lopsided lists as first lists. You learn very quickly what you are missing. I hope to lose with too many yoke fiends. It just seems like a foul joke, and maybe I end up with cool thematic 2nd list.
I had an idea for an list but when I made it, like 700 points ain’t a lot even 900 when you make a list and I had to cut a lot, when it comes to having units I always just make sure every guy has a weapon and that’s it
This isn't 40k where you build a list that turbo stomps folks before the game even starts. The way Trench Crusade is designed rn units are far more "equal" in terms of pure math than what we've likely acclamated to. A couple of pilgrims can and will take down an Archfiend if played enough. What matters most in Trench Crusade is table play and mixing abilities on the tabletop, and the game absolutely encourages you to play with flavor
Problem is rules are directed towards campaign. But the community want exhibition/tournament, and current state the balance isnt there for that. Also said community is full of gatekeepers and largely sexist. My area the majority of interested players have already dropped interest due to the above.
Really interesting claims. I haven't seen much clamoring for tournament games at all, and one shots work just fine with the existing rules. I doubt they will be balancing the game for tourney play as a priority, as the devs have been clear from the start that the focus will be on campaigns. I'd ask you to expand on "full of gatekeepers and largely sexist." I don't think we should just get in the habit of saying things without expanding on it. Your final sentence indicates that this sexism might be a local problem for you?
I’m going full send into the Red Brigade subtraction for New Antioch and I’ve been working on different lists for melee, ranged, heavy weapons etc Even if they end up sucking ima make em work!

Well said !
"You dont need a 5 model list" correct! As a Court player, you bring 6. All of your Elites.
And no wretched to whip? Where's fun in that!?
Double Artillery Witches is...Diabolical

God damn I'm so glad you're doing vids on TC. I am so keen for my models to arrive!

Happy to see your videos back :) been a great channel to learn lore !
Great idea for a video! I could really use the experience and knowledge sense I haven't even played yet and am still converting my pilgrims
Useful video ! Topic suggestion : I was looking for factions gameplay presentation, but TH-cam showed none
Thanks for the good content Scanner, I hope you eventually do actually make a kitbash video for trench crusade, I really could use it for my varangian guard.
Great content! I am planning an expeditionary forces of Abyssinia new Antioch force myself. Double combat medics got my attention.
It'd be nice to see a few suggested "starter" forces for each faction to get a somewhat balanced interaction between players.
I am also just here to enjoy Trench Crusade and have fun :)

Great videos. Hoping for more hands of fate.
I feel like 7-9 units is kinda the sweet spot for a lot of different armies and variants.
I am currently putting together a playlist for trench crusade for both painting minis and playing the game.
Two artillery witches feels spot on lore wise for a setting where hells power is dominant

Ooo I've been looking for tips on how to build my warbands. Built a trench pilgrims one and need to decide a variant

This is what I am going to start a campaign with very soon. It is a New Antioch warband.
Lieutenant: Reinforced Armour, Automatic Rifle, Sword, Sword, Helmet, Gas Mask: 168 ducats
Trench Cleric: Reinforced Armour, Shield, Submachine Gun, Sword, Helmet, Gas Mask: 159 ducats
Sniper Priest: Sniper Rifle, Shovel, Mountaineer Kit: 93 ducats

Total: 684 ducats

The golden rule, the rule of cool.
Broooooo hand of god 3 AND painting videos yessssssss
“You don’t need a 5 model super expensive list” Looks at my Debtors to Mammon, a 5 model hyper expensive list 😭
The moment I get the first ducats expansion I’m adding in 2 troopers
I feel like Mammon can be the exception to this lol
Don’t the troopers have to cost at least 80 ducats to field in a knights of avarice list? Oh and glory to Mammon
@ Yeah 80 is the minimum, I forgot when I wrote that. So correction, first ducats upgrade I’ll add ONE trooper lol.
"Don't over invest into a 5 unit, horribly expensive warband"
Good thing I overinvested into a 4 unit *hyper* expensive warband.
lol, what did you go with?
@scannerbarkly It's a New Antioch warband consisting of a Lieutenant with an auto rifle, a Trench Cleric with a shield and submachine gun, and 2 Mechanized Infantry, one with an HMG and one with a Heavy Flamethrower. How do Yoemen compare to other factions basic (30 points) units ?
No examples for New Antioch?
Is there any news on when the stls from the kickstarter will be released?
In about a week!
