That's really the thing for me with any physical collectibles, price is not the big issue, it's space, and that was really what kept me away from all of the lootbox variants (incidentally this is also why I don't buy collectors editions for games, or fancy special editions for movies).

    • @T3hXinro
      @T3hXinro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's the same thing for most randomized subscription boxes. Even with the specialized ones, after one or two months of surprise items, you're going to start feeling like you'd be better off just buying what you wanted with the money you put into it rather than a grab bag which is ultimately just an ad to get you to spend more. The only ones that don't seem to suffer from this are certain beauty boxes, because people into beauty thrive on trying new items instead of paying full price for something only to realize they don't like it.

    • @K-Anator
      @K-Anator 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      To their defence, I was subscribed to NerdBlock for a while, and later ArcadeBlock. I can't say I ever got a box without at least one item in it that I liked, that if I had of purchased by itself would have cost nearly as much as the crate itself.
      For $25 CAD, I ended up getting a crate with a Fallout luck bobblehead in it, which alone would have been over $30 after shipping had I bought it straight from Bethesda. I still wear all my t-shirts that I got, which sell for about $20 + shipping.
      It's been quite a while since I got a box, but if you can find the right box, you're bound to have a decent time, especially if you like collectible crap and random trinkets.

  • @ripwitch9833
    @ripwitch9833 4 ปีที่แล้ว +68

    It's actually more because LootCrate lost their customers' trust. A lot of people from r/lootcratespoilers won't buy and recommend not buying anything from Lootcrate till they send out all backlog crates and see if they'll actually fulfill their promise of actually sending crates on time and upping the quality.
    Not to mention that the backlog crates are getting items from past crates (I even saw 2 items I got 2 years ago and a free poster you can download in someone's DX crate) and featured items aren't being put in some people's crates (someone who got the crate that featured a Katamari figure didn't get it for example).
    Edit: I forgot to mention that the same people on r/lootcratespoilers do think crowdfunding crates is the best way to go (since they'll know exactly how much stock they need and have seen other monthly boxes do the same thing), but the fact that they still have backlog crates to ship and at least a year of not sending crates on time puts them off from backing them.

    I finally canceled my loot crate sub earlier this year due to watching you tubers open crates and then having to wait months for my crate to get to me. Instead of actually shipping crates to paying customers loot crate was going above and beyond for the you tubers who were getting the crates for free.
    I got my last 3 crates owed to me earlier this month, they were crates from august, September and October and 2 of them had repeat T shirts instead of the shirts all the you tubers and social media people got. It started off as a great thing and then it just seemed to slowly go down the drain like most things do.
    I currently have nearly 5 years of crates stacked up in my garage.

    I don't even remember when I first heard about LootCrate, but it must've been somewhere in the middle of the hype. I think I must've gotten 2 years of crates. But it's been over 2 years since I cancelled my subscription. I didn't even know LootCrate had gone bankrupt because I still see emails showing up in my inbox. I think it's funny though that at one point in time people thought the growth had no end in sight. Because I'm not even an economics minded person and I knew there was a thin bubble that had to burst. And the reason I knew that was because I had about 2 years worth of collectibles that weren't worth anything, a few t-shirts that were kinda okay and a bunch I didn't like. And a closet full of boxes. I had run out of room for any more stuff. I don't have a house or garage or shed and I'm not renting a storage unit for this crap. I rent a small apartment. I think the best things I have from my subscription is a Captain America shield, a Matchbox car in the box...I can't even remember what show it's from... maybe Supernatural. I have an Infinity Gauntlet oven mitt that I'll never actually use. My kids have most of the other figures and toys. And I wear the shirts when I haven't showered and I'm not going anywhere.

    You also forgot to mention that LC overspent for a tour school bus with custom repaint, and the excessive spending on convention hopping by a handful of LC employees on the company dime. when I saw that bus, I knew something was wrong...when they added a dozen of different product lines instead of consolidating into one or two good crates to maximize profits...I walked away. Loot crate should be the prime example of what NOT to do in the subscription box market.

    I still have some of the stuff from my Loot Anime days, but for the most part, once they ended their partnership with Crunchyroll (which has a decent merch selection on their shop) the quality of those products went downhill in a hurry. Once they did 4 SAO themed crates in quick succession, followed immediately by an AoT crate and then ANOTHER SAO crate, I knew I'd made a good decision getting off THAT wagon when I did. But I did get some good stuff in the good days. Stuff I do actually still use. And a few Manga and light novels that I genuinely really like. But yeah...

    Out of all the things that Loot Crate provided, I almost exclusively used Loot Vault to get the stuff I *actually* wanted instead of subscribing to a box with hopes I get things I actually want. They also had quite a lot of discounts and coupon codes for the stuff on the Vault, making a lot of the items on there extremely cheap.
    That was also something that really dug into Loot Crate's profits, considering you didn't need to buy a $20-$30 box to get that one actually cool item you want from the box. I also took advantage of their blowout sale a couple of months ago, and got a ton of anime items for under $20 (maybe eight items for about $1-$5 each depending) before the Vault was closed. It was cool getting a decent mousepad and a shirt in that box.

    A few years ago I and my kids were into loot boxes. We bought these geek themed boxes, Japanese themed boxes with toys or food, makeup boxes and a few others too. It was a real wake up call for me when I started reorganizing and decluttering my home last year, how much stuff we got we would never have bought if it didn't come in these surprise boxes. So even if their market value was more than we paid, probably most of it was stuff we didn't need or want and we would have been better off just using this money buying stuff we actually wanted.

    The biggest problem with Loot Crate in particular was this: they spent their money buying influence (marketing, sponsored videos, etc) while cheaping out on their actual product. So they were spending all their money to let as many people as possible know they exist, then sent them t shirts, key chains, stickers, and other overstock swag that you wouldn't care if you left behind in your hotel room.
