I really enjoy these videos. Especially the calendar video. My wife has no interest in being a pilot but I do. It’s nice to sit down and watch the video with her so she can see what our life may be like! Thank you !
LOVE the content! If I could do it all over I would have stayed and pursued commercial aviation. But I didn't and went another direction and have regretted it. Just retired after 30 years and it is what it is. Really enjoy your videos and thanks for being so open! 👍 Happy 4th!
I fly for fun, for over 30 years. Diamondstar is my current plane. I thought 35 years ago I wanted to be an airline pilot. Went another way with my career. Thus just flying for fun. I find your videos very informative and fun. Thanks for your efforts!
I remember seeing the plane you took from SAT to JFK on the flight radar! It was 731AN which was the first 777 I have seen irl which is why I was tracking it.
Oh man! I follow you on TikTok and found you here now. What a coincidence that you are flying 777 now and thats all we flying in the flight sim world too with the release of the PMDG B77W. It would be cool to have a vid of you trying it out in the sim and giving it your review!
"Sick if needed" sounds like a wild way for sick leave to work on its face, but this actually makes a lot of sense from a scheduling point. Neat! I also have O trips to CLT, but that's easy for me out of SFO. ;)
Great vid again Darren. Really insightful and just the sort of thing any budding pilot would want to see. The American system of scheduling is incredibly confusing and does seem to be totally dominated by the power of the unions. Your pay is also insane. That’s not a dig, you earn it. The difference in average fares paid by American flyers and Europeans must be some gulf I’d imagine with your cost base. Looking forward to your July wrap-up video and seeing how short-call treats you 👌
Thank you for the videos. Working on career 2.0 and it’s great to see this side of the business before actually getting there. Could you do a video comparing your airbus pay/average day vs 777 pay/avg day. Thanks.
Thank you for the kind words. I plan to compare work days and credit. Pay will be trivial as we got a new pay scale last year which is far and above the old one. My hourly pay now is equal to what an Airbus Captain made last year.
Super interesting. A while ago I flew JFK-MIA on an American 77W. I was wondering if there is actually passenger demand for wide bodies on these domestic routes, or if they’re done for operational / cargo reasons.
Always makes my dad when I see you have posted a video.. Thank you Darren. Anyone ever offered you a job doing voice overs for commercials or animated movies ?
Thanks for the vid. Appreciate the honesty. I am currently in High School taking a ground school class focused on helping us to pass the written exam and get our PPL. I am very interested in pursuing aviation as a career, however, I get scared that I won't be able to be home for my kids enough and they will feel a lack of a father figure in the home as having a family is my greatest goal in life. Do you feel this way as a father yourself? How negotiable is the schedule and QOL? Also what airline do you fly for? Sorry for a lot of questions but I really want to do this and to have honest input from a man of your experience and lifestyle would be great. I'm also considering the Air Force as my way of gaining experience, what are your thoughts?
I have a video in the works concerning family life. In short I live in the same city where I am based. I am home a lot. I average 8 nights in hotels on the Airbus a month. Schedule is 100% seniority. The more seniority you have the more options you have period. I don't state the airline for many reasons. I am not allowed to ever appear to represent them in any capacity. You're getting a great early start by the way. As far as military, I am 100% civilian.
Question about upgrades: Can you be forced to upgrade or can you stay as a senior FO for your whole career? Asking as a new “dad” pilot starting career 2.0. QOL is important to me.
Hey question for you. I know sometimes you can get 5 days of reserve or 6 days I think . is it possible you could get one of those trips such as Dfw to London London to Miami Back to London Then end back to base in Dfw? Are you allowed to bid something like that?
@@geekontheflightdeck I’ve probably met you on the ramp. I work for the contract company that fuels in DSM. Always great to see you guys upgraded to the heavy aircraft.
You messed up. Your “days off contractually” were 19. Your “actual days off” were 12. Dont mislead people into believing your own phycological cope. Sitting at home within callout is working on call. You cant drink, you cant travel outside a range for traffic and preparation and you cant turn down any flying given. Being on reserve is work, you were working, you just werent called to fly.
I’m on long call. I can be travel anywhere I want. I can drink. It’s a 12 hour call out. There’s no requirement to be home. Troll away and educate yourself.
Trips to CLT - 0. Keep that tally!!!

LOVE your videos! Excellent to really demystify pilot pay and how it works along with your schedule.
Love these vlogs

Thank you, my brother. Always informative!!!
Thank you for sharing your airline life.😊 Happy 4th of July to you and your family.

Dude your vids are bassass…keep em coming 👍
My goal is one video a week published on Thursdays
Love your videos Darren, along with your honesty on salary earned every month.
Thanks for posting Darren!
Thanks again Darren. Got a chuckle out of your comment on the encyclopedia.
I bet those born in the 2000s had to Google what that word means. Ha

I was thinking about that too... Would be EPIC!!
Thanks for the amazing video! Im flying to FCO on your aircraft type out of DFW in early August. Maybe you will be on my flight there or back.
Awesome content appreciate it

And happy Fourth of July 🎉
I’d love to see a QnA with the wife and Qs on her career!

Nice. It's always been my dream. If the airlines paid me enough to lay my bills and sent me through training, I swear I would be the first to sign up.

Thank you. No. I have to really concentrate on my speech. I battle a stutter
@@geekontheflightdeck I used to do the announcing for my son’s swim team at swim meets. I was once told I have the perfect face for radio,
Hey we love CLT haha

QOL above paycheck, BUT if Kirkland Air were to receive a350 prior to switching to a320 captain, would you consider it if you could keep your base?
Love the content Darren, what’s the requirement to get from long/short call reserve to line holder for you?
Seniority. Just seniority.
Question about upgrades: Can you be forced to upgrade or can you stay as a senior FO for your whole career? Asking as a new “dad” pilot starting career 2.0. QOL is important to me.
Most airlines do NOT force upgrades. I have heard Skywest for one does. The carrier I work for does not force upgrades.
Hey question for you. I know sometimes you can get 5 days of reserve or 6 days I think .
is it possible you could get one of those trips such as Dfw to London
London to Miami
Back to London
Then end back to base in Dfw? Are you allowed to bid something like that?
That is plausible but not likely. Rare to fly through another base on the 777 that has pilots based there.
Man, Darren really hates CLT 😂
What base is more junior, DFW or MIA for the 777? (or 787 but I'm pretty sure it's more senior)
DFW is more senior across the board. 787 is more senior across the system as well.
Trips to CLT - 0. lmao Darren
Are there ever domestic trips you can pick up being based in Dallas?
There's currently no Domestic 777 trips in my base
Curious about the use of DSM? I know it’s a fictional scenario, but one could dream of a DSM-LHR flight. lol.
It’s just a city I flew to often in my regional days.
@@geekontheflightdeck I’ve probably met you on the ramp. I work for the contract company that fuels in DSM. Always great to see you guys upgraded to the heavy aircraft.
Hey Darren, does your family ever hop on any of your overseas flights?
No. Not enough time plus they can’t ride on crew transportation.
Captain Airbus wide body or narrow body…where does “your airline” fly wide body Airbus planes from your base?
There’s no Wide body Airbus here
Trips to CLT- 0 😂😂😂😂😂
DFW-MAD 4 hr delay in DFW, didn't you exceed the crew duty limit?
4 pilot Crew on that trip. We had 2+ more hours until time out came into play. A traditional 3 pilot Crew would have been more of an issue.
Tks for your clarification
Will you guys be attending the All-Star game?
Not likely. We just went on a whim. We live in the same city.
You think the FA’S get a deal?😊
I do not comment on anything airline specific
first!!!

I can also turn down flying. You know nothing of my work rules.
Not really sure why the wife’s career is relevant in each and every video
Without her I'd have no career. She's a huge part of why I'm a pilot.
He’s proud of her. It’s called a healthy relationship
I’m not saying that in a disrespectful way. I’m just curious like why no videos are made pertaining to her career of science background
Like I’ve expected to see a bit of the type of stuff she does since he’s mentioned it often.
No, like I am a science/medicine enthusiast so that’s why
Ah I should mention her exact career in a video. Thanks
Hello from Australia Mrs Darren , could make a review of 777 PMDG for flight simulator ❤ that will great to hear you review 🤓
It would be a quick review. I’ll consider it
