    WOW this video and the COMMENTS helped immensely. Thank you to everyone trying to help by recommending replacing parts but as a NEW IP user who only used mine TWICE now, replacing parts is out of the question and I was scared I had a faulty unit. Now reading the comments I know this is normal for a few reasons:
    1. The pot actually over pressurizes then releases some steam for about a minute (like mine).
    2. The liquid level and/or food level are low (this is the truest for me since I was simply making a handful of asparagus and/or reheating like 3 ribs quickly so not much in it).
    Thanks again EVERYONE! Great Community!

    I had a similar problem, and got it fixed. The steam was leaking from the release valve too much. My solution was to remove the release valve cap and clean up inside of it with a cotton swab especially where you see a white ball like thing.

    Just used the Instant Pot for the second time and relief valve malfunctioned. I did the water test and cooked a roast a couple of weeks ago and everything worked perfectly. Tonight, the relief valve released pressure the entire cooking time - and did not countdown properly. Food cooked but dried out.
    Figured out the problem: there is a steel "spring" that has to be clipped and seated properly into the inside of the relief valve cap itself in order for the valve to seat itself properly on its post. It's basically the equivalent of a paper clip malfunctioning - but it's a VERY IMPORTANT paperclip.
    When looking on Amazon numerous people lose these relief caps down their garbage disposal (and elsewhere). I would assume the spring is popping loose at that exact moment in time. It is very important to know and understand the importance of this spring and there is no mention of it in the user manual.

    For anyone's future reference, those who suggested adding more water in this scenario were correct. Apparently these things need a minimum volume to stop releasing steam.

    Professionals say this is not a concern. The temp simply built up during cooking to exceed psi range and the safety mechanism then relieves the pressure bringing it back down with the acceptable psi range.

      Do you know why steam is coming out where two metal inserts are on top of duo plus lid, not sides. I wonder if 375ml is too little water or not enough volume of food. ?

    • @magnolia2
      @magnolia2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think this is exactly why! It makes sense. If this didn’t happen and the temperature wasn’t continuously being regulated, it would become way too hot in the pot and the original set temperature would fluctuate to the highest number.

  • @ericgustafson7287
    @ericgustafson7287 6 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    You do not have a problem with the seal. This sometimes happens with smaller quantities of water. When the pot comes to temp quickly, the heater has not yet turned off. The pot overpressures momentarily and the safety valve releases. Then when the heat cycles and the pressure is no longer rising, cooking continues as usual Try the test with more water, a quart or more. It will heat more slowly and should not vent until you want it to.

    I think what Eric mentions is correct. I just got an 8qt instant pot and when I did the initial test with just the recommendation of just 3 cup water, I got the results you present here in this video. When I 10cups, it worked fine, I think theres just to much empty space in the pot to pressurize correctly. By adding in more volume, it works.

    So you can actually pull off the valve at any time... it’s just sitting there. which seems crazy. There’s nothing keeping it on there except it’s weight. If you look at how it works, turning it only puts it low enough to sit on the pressure hole. I couldn’t understand this at first but I believe this is what makes the instant pot safe. That little guy is just heavy enough to ensure the pressure does not get higher than whatever it’s max is. I guess that’s what distinguishes it from portentously unsafe pressure cookers which completely seal?

    There is a retaining pin which holds the release valve on the stem (looks like an omega symbol with reverse legs) If this comes loose it won't keep the valve secure to stem and allows the steam to continually leak by. Just reinsert the pin in the bottom lip of retaining valve. Both ends should be totally inside the lip!!! Then place back over stem.

    Hi, I don't have an Instant Pot (or any pressure cooker). That being said, I believe there is a little silicon pin inside the pressure release handle that fits in/on the valve itself (the metal tube in the lid). If the pin is worn or damaged, steam may be able to escape.
    If it doesn't negatively impact your cooking, I say leave it be.
    If it prevents the pressure from building up, you can probably find a replacement handle online.
    Also: Pressure cooker release valves are ''safety devices''. They are designed to let steam out if the cooker reaches a dangerous pressure level (to prevent flying lids and boiling water induced face melting). What I mean to say is... don't fix your problem by modifying the valve handle :P.

    I was making chili. It was a bit on the thick side. It vented like this while heating and just would pop the seal to pressurize. When I opened the lid there was some liquid on the top so I stored it and tried again. This time it sealed. One issue is volume. It was a full pot of cold food. Second the chili was too thick at first and there wasn’t enough liquid till it got fully hot. This made it vent for a while. Finally it sealed but I went crazy trouble shooting till then. So make sure you have enough water. The lid and seal are tight, the vent button isn’t have way, and you have enough liquid. Good luck!

  • @marketingafjm393
    @marketingafjm393 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This began happening to me after two years. I cook small quantities which a video made by the manufacturer claims can lead to this problem. If you are on low pressure setting that might make things worse since, as the video said, the temperature sensor may not read properly and it will overheat the food - leading to overpressure and the release valve releasing. Try switching to high pressure setting to see if that changes things.
    I have a feeling the silicon tip inside the release valve may get hard with age and just doesn't seal the little hole very well. May need to spend the $7 for a new one.

    Not sure if someone already posted this but this was happening to me and all I did was push down on the lid and it pressurized completely... I've done this a few times. I haven't used it very many times so doubt it's the problem with the pot or seal, but it works every time

    I would try to replace the silicon tip on the sealing valve and the silicon gasket. These are the two places which help hold the steam pressure from leaking. I just had this problem. Try opening the lid and closing it again. The button should be up instead of level with surrounding plastic. Give it a few minutes, and you can use a for or spoon and gently lift on your valve and you should have steam building up, and a little should come out of the valve. If you get these results you know it has sealed.

      Did this end up with a good resolution? I've replaced all my silicone parts, made sure everything is clean, but now my husband and I are suspecting a "brain malfunction" -- something with a sensor is off, but we've been using this thing for 4+ years and wondering if it's better to just replace it at this point :/

    • @djluke0102
      @djluke0102  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine turns out to be not a malfunction, the pot is regulating pressure by letting off steam. If your pot is leaking steam consistently, the question is from which part. If it's the lid it's the seal. If it's the release valve, there's a clip inside that might need to be reseated. If it's the pop-up sealer, there's a silicone cover that can be removed and the whole mechanism can be cleaned out. Hope this helps.

      @@djluke0102 I tried cleaning all three of those, but then decided to replace them. With a brand new float valve, sealing ring and vent knob. The leak is through the vent knob in the sealing position, so thats why we are theorizing that it's a safety feature when the pressure gets too high that it would start to release... But I'm not getting any error codes either, so it's just really puzzling.

    Sealing ring should be changed out every six months if you’re using your instant pot regularly. It can get really stretched out and loose. I also heard that you can freeze your sealing ring for five minutes and it should get back into a more rigid form until you can order a new sealing ring. They’re pretty inexpensive and they come in a two pack.

  • @sertacsilbastan

    It works perfectly fine! The problem would be if it never stopped leaking air. When the liquid reaches the boiling point, it leaks air for about 1-2 minutes before it seals itself. Mine started not stopping at all although it's clean and sealed well. I was hoping to find a solution to that 😂

      Is it leaking from the sealing ring? If so make sure it's properly seated. Is the pin not popping up and sealing? Make sure it is unobstructed by turning the lid upside down and observing that the pin moves freely. If the pressure release valve leaks pressure after the pin seals, it may not be a problem.

    What your having happen is perfectly normal. When your pressure cooking and it starts to let out steam like that, it's over pressurized and it's release enough pressure to be safe, it's a safety feature as long as it's locked and cooking everything you should be ok. Now if its constantly doing it and not cooking everything inside, than you might have a valve problem.

    Incidentally, in the Ninja Foodi, 3 min @ High pressure with a quick release (in 2 cups of water) is perfect for (6) MEDIUM cooked eggs.
    But 2 minutes wasn't enough for SOFT "boiled" eggs (albumin was still very runny).
