This is a video I really needed to see like 10 years ago. I had no idea where I really wanted to go either, I really enjoy learning about history and science and engineering, and initially went to college for the first one, but decided I didn't want to be a teacher and there isn't many other career options. So in the interest of money I switched to computer science and I entirely regret that decision, because yeah, given time moving up the ladder I can be making a lot more money, but it isn't what makes me happy, and starting in a helpdesk position, oh my god I hate phones so much.

Just remember that they are probably winging it too. They might have a vision now, but hate it later as well. I’m 25 about to get my Bachelor’s (have an associates) and been in my career for nearly 4 years. There’s people here that have been doing this for 30+ years. I just can’t see that for myself and don’t think I would really want to climb the ladder to higher positions. It’s either go the safe route and stay when I graduate or look for new opportunities.

As a perspective, use my mom's case. She is 55 and has a very stable life now, plent of passive income and she is retired. But she lived a rough life, studied something that she did liked but listened to the others and went on a differet path after coming out of the college. As a result she spent 25+ years of her life working on the corporative world and hated it. The good condition she has now came as bittersweet lucky, she lost 2 husbands and spent most of her life doing something she didnt enjoy. As for now she struggles to decide what she does in life with the possibilities she has. The thing is, don't be afraid to change, go the way you find yourself happy with at the time, and as life goes on, change your path as necessary. Life is too short to be stuck on something you don't like.

I highly relate to 8:50. It was at that point that (when I looked up the chain of command at the company) I realized that I did not want to work in aerospace whatsoever. Not only was the whole industry heavily dictated by government contracts, but I saw that the pay ceiling for using technical skills was extremely low. Very quickly I was being pushed into management, which meant living in the world of excel spreadsheet line items, vizio block diagrams, and powerpoint presentations. I felt myself becoming pigeonholed into esoterica that would have prevented further personal growth in things that captured my interest. I went into artistic pursuits, which led to 3D, which led to software.
It's truly frightening, however, living with the sense that you're "starting over" when you really aren't. Those years of experience discovering what you like and don't like are crazy valuable, and many people who seem highly successful in their one career have their own regrets, their own suppressed passions, their own "what if" daily musings. It takes a lot of guts to completely change career paths. If you're having a difficult time, just remember that you're choosing the path less traveled. You're not conforming to societal ideals. A consequence of allowing your individuality to flourish is living with that internal questioning. You're experiencing the pressure to be just like everyone else, instead of the person you truly want to be. Just keep fighting that (so long as you can keep the basics in order, like finances and such).
[EDIT] Oh, yeah, and be wary of passion jobs. Having a passion as a job has the highest risk of losing that passion through overwork and burnout. Several companies exploit the competitiveness of their positions to overwork and underpay anyone in such a position. You can make it work, but you have to stop yourself from overworking. You have to walk away each day when you still want to do more.
and REACH OUT TO YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. We live in a society. We're meant to help each other. It's quite difficult to do things like change where you live or how you earn a living completely on your own. Let others who care about you know what you're trying to do. You'll be surprised where the help comes from.

I’m 24, I don’t really have a plan for the future and I’m definitely not happy with where I am right now but I think that for many “young” people the biggest obstacle in their way of getting where they want to be is themselves. Two months ago my girlfriend of 3 years broke up with me, even though everything seemed beautiful. This really is a time of discovery, learning from your mistakes and taking risks. I learned that putting money and prestige on a pedestal isn’t what really makes you happy. It really makes you miserable if you forget what things really matter. It can even make you lose out on things that you love. Remember to take care of yourself, to care for people you love, to look deep inside your mind. Life goes on whatever happens and as Tedward said you will eventually get out of most pits in your 20s. I really believe that. Life goes on, so it’s better not to stand around, but rather take the most of it, shaping your future in the meantime. I am still finding myself as we all are, but hey, at least I have a degree and a Jaguar. This video came in perfect timing. I'm 23 and took the last 5 years off to really figure out what I like doing and what I'm good at. I knew I wanted to do something in the art or music scene but wasn't quite sure. I decided to try the entrepreneur route first to see if I could make it without a degree. Needless to say I learned a valuable point in that I'm just not that type of person (which I learned is okay!) So I took those years to see what cool stuff I think I could pursue as a career. And as of a couple weeks ago I came to the conclusion that for the industry I want to be in, it's very realistic to get a degree. I'm super blessed that I had the opportunity to learn what I do and don't like. While a lot of my friends went to college, I took pride in the fact that I was going against the grain, doing my own thing. For a while I had a stigma from my family that college was all bad, out to get your money, and wouldn't be as efficient as learning on your own (at least for the art industry). I learned that there are pros and cons for both! It really matters what type of person you are!
Anyways, I just wanted to tell anyone out there that if you feel like you've wasted time doing stuff you don't like, please for your future self's sake, STOP. Pursue what you like to do! Screw people's opinions, live the life you feel will be fulfilling! It's never too late!
(Btw, as of literally today, I just finished signing up for my fall semester. I start in 2 weeks LOL! The timing is impeccable)

Thanks for this tedward. I’m coming up on 26 yrs old next month and feel like my 20s so far have just been passing me by like I’m on auto pilot. After graduating college I got a good job and have been focusing on my career but at the same time accidentally letting time, friends, family slip away. Ik I’m still young but this reminded me to put myself back out there and take more risks and enjoy life

I'm about to turn 30 in 5 months. I have wasted my 20s. It is what it is. No one can grab time, it slips. Where someone older than me is today, I'm gonna be there tomorrow. Where I'm today, someone younger than me is gonna be there tomorrow.
All I can do is ground myself in reality, recognize options, choose the best one and move forward. That's life. It passes.

Love what you said here, Tedward! It’s been life changing for me to do the seemingly hard things to keep discovering who I am, but in turn it’s helped me love myself and my life infinitely more than if I had only played by someone else’s rules. Trying to find balance between being responsible and having fun is key!

This vid was honestly so meaningful, hope a lot of people see it and have a different outlook on their lives. Just turned 16 around 2 weeks ago and in my freshman year, I always thought it would take me years to really know what I wanna do in life and what college I wanna go to. I never thought I would have the plans that I do today, I’m more in-tuned with what I wanna do in my future and what college I wanna go to. While I don’t specifically know everything that’s gonna happen in the future, I feel like things just naturally happen and having these little guides and plans can definitely play a big part in that. Sometimes I like to remind myself that no matter how much someone knows what they want to do, I feel like we’re all just fish in a tank swimming around not really knowing where to go, we just go.

as someone who just graduated like a month ago this was so incredibly needed. I feel so lost and so demotivated compared to my friends to apply to dozens and even hundreds of places while I'm only applying to a couple places here and there and it is super depressing. But that don't compare yourself to others and appreciate the effort I have put in is so important because just because I haven't gotten the same results as one of my friends does not mean I'm not trying or I'm not doing MY absolute best. Do your best without pushing yourself past your healthy limits and take care of yourself.

Definitely needed this.. I'm 25 & I graduated college "late" compared to my peers. I just graduated this past December with a B.S. in IT, and have started a corporate job and definitely already feel like these past 6-7 months have flown by and I've just been going with the flow. There are certifications I want to get that people say will help me advance in my career, but I have been unmotivated to do so. You definitely have given me motivation to keep at it & keep trying. This video definitely hit home, I've been under a lot of stress recently I feel that I don't have much time to "reset". Thanks Tedward.

That statement about finding a purpose and the difficulty of getting out of depression really hits home. Ever since I came across Tedward's video about being gay in the car community, the sincerity in the advice he gives in videos like this as well as the pockets of wisdom he share in passing during the POV videos - I end up valuing a lot. This feeling is all too familiar to me. I was heavily involved in my school's F.I.R.S.T. robotics program from 5th grade until high school graduation; an outlet for a nerd to experiment with Legos, computers, mechanical objects, and friends. While I picked up a lot of STEM related knowledge, I was passionate about social studies & history and I knew that was what I wanted to study. I loved the topic, the teachers I had for it were great, and I was content to make a smaller salary in life as long as I could be comfortable. I distinctly remember our senior banquet which had programs that had all our names on the back, where we were going to college, and what we would be studying. I was the only history major in a sea of STEM fields. Went to college out of state, didn't like it. Came home and went to my local community college, a.k.a. "the place where you go for 13th grade"; boy was I wrong. Never been worked harder by my professors there, never been so wrong about a foolish stereotype.
In the midst of college, I got a job part time at a local tech recycling company. Constantly surrounded by retired/out of warranty enterprise IT equipment; desktops, laptops, parts, hard drives, etc. Self taught, I had built a few computers prior to that, and this job gave me real, credible work experience to show that I could handle the basic fundamentals of IT. It also showed me the value of hard work; the factory was hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Aside from recycling and testing IT equipment, I was lifiting heavy objects, unloading and loading trucks, sweeping hard concrete floors, filling up dumpsters with trash; clothes, hands, and body dirty and exhausted. But I solidified my work ethic. Some employees had been there for decades, trapped due to their lack of education or opportunity. I had other opportunities and advantages; I was younger, I had the chance to go to college, I had the benefit of living at my parents house with nearly zero expenses. I made sure to look around at them and my surroundings frequently, knowing that this is how "the other side" works. Blue collar.
College graduation came fast; I had excellent grades, but a History B.A. doesn't get one far in the field. I was distraught; nobody had ever told me to not follow my dreams and passions, but they also never said "make sure it can pay". So, at 23, I took a sales job at an IT reseller company. $30,000 a year (not much on the east coast USA but it came with benefits), selling IT equipment/products and I hated it. I knew exactly what I was selling while my coworkers just followed requests for "computer stuff idk". Customers verbally harassing me over the phone with such wicked insults and tones, all because they knew they could get away with it. Effective businesspeople make for terrible humans. I made enough money to pay my bills but not enough to move out of my parent's house, going to sleep many a night on the verge of panic attacks waiting to see what would be thrown at me the next day. So, at night after work, I distracted myself by taking small IT courses online, tinkered with old computers, and searched for jobs that could be better.
Dissatisfied with corporate, I applied to jobs in the government sector and found a job working 12 hour night shifts. Since then, after a myriad of government jobs, I work as a state employee for my alma mater doing IT, married at 27, living that comfortable life I had dreamed about for years but never had quite found.
Just because you are in your 20s and are not as "on track" as your peers does not mean you will be barred from success. Sure, you may need to roll up your sleeves and get dirty, get sweaty, and get tired to get to the level of someone else that didn't have to go that route. But not forever. Focus on yourself and what you can accomplish, instead of fixating on what others are accomplishing. Your friends have their own struggles and sacrifices that you don't see just as much as you have your own struggles to deal with that they might not be aware of. Listen to your friends and learn from them, help them with their questions and concerns. Reach out to your families and make them aware of what you're looking for.
And please, go buy "that" car. Life's too short to say "what if". Never stop driving.

im 27. i graduated with a chemical engineering degree when i was 22. academically i was smart but i found it hard to fully apply that intelligence to something i wasnt interested in. i learnt that at uni. it was such a chore for me to study for those exams and i just thought to myself that if studying for 2/3 weeks is this bad, imagine a lifetime working in this field. its now just a piece of paper to me that i wasted 4 years of my life to get. im dream chasing now. have been since i left 5 years ago. im proud to say im getting close. im catching up. even just typing that right there was a nice feeling because although i amnt where i want to be, if i look back on the past 5 years, the progress ive made has been incredible. but above all, the progress ive made mentally has been OUT OF THIS WORLD. i suffered so much hardship in those years. so much self doubt because i felt as though i wasnt getting anywhere and then id be like i fucked up i made a mistake i should have just gotten a normal job like everyone else. so much pressure because all my friends were starting their careers. so many life events...both things that were in my control and things that were out of my control. and in the beginning they would really fuck me. i would go i to severe depression for months at a time. i would stop gymming, i wouldnt want to eat. i wouldnt want to go out. i lost all motivation. then i would slowly come out of it. i couldnt even tell you how many times that happened. but each time i came out, i was just that little bit more stronger to it. ive had so much experience at rock bottom, that im truly comfortable there now. and the mindset i have now is so bulletproof you wouldnt even believe. i gym everyday. run 6.5km everyday. i went from 110kg to 75kg. i work towards my dream everyday. no more rock bottoms. no more depression. no more broken sleeps. but to get to this point, those years of pain were NECESSARY. if its not painful, theres no value in it. if money was free, it wouldnt really be money would it? the power of the mind is not a joke.i repeat. THE POWER OF THE MIND IS NOT A JOKE. if you need help and want someone to talk to then you can hit my insta. @z_abideen. i dont post. ive been off socials for a long time now. but hit me up if youre feeling lost. a stranger is the best person to talk to because they dont know you to judge you and you can tell them the honest truth. believe in yourself. thats how you do it. thats the key.

Love these vids so much. When I graduated college, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I still kinda don't, but I discovered how much power there is in just making a choice. And I'm surprised at how quickly things can happen when you set them in motion! I quit my job at a big soulless multinational to work for a super small company in the ski industry. Moving to CO in a few weeks. Could miss it in a blink.
I guess, if I were to boil it down, I discovered just how worthwhile it is to knuckle down and make decisions, especially when they feel scary!

  • @ThePh34R

It's funny, cause as a 29 year old and despite having definitely tried a literal shit ton of different things, I still feel like I wasted time and could've graduated earlier etc. if I had chosen my degree more wisely in the first place. But on the other hand, what I actually did was maximize the hell out of that time by trying out different disciplines until I found what I want. I did what interested me at the time, listened to myself, took risks, and now I'm looking at an exciting future.
It's a cliché, but honestly be brave and listen to yourself. Take those risks, cause you have plenty of time and very rarely will that time be wasted in your 20s if you're following your interests.

Firstly, I am genuinely glad that a car man from U.S. is bright enough to come to such conclusions while his fellow countrymen can't pinpoint their country on global map.
Secondly, I want to share my life story, let it be a waking call for those who are patient to read: I'm from Iran. 28 years old. Currently I live in Iran. I was always top student in my class, I studied clinical psychology at the best University of Iran. When I participated in exams for my masters, I was ranked 44th in a country of 85 million. Then when I was going to enter the university, the parliament came up with the idea of throwing us out and putting their own children instead of us in the best positions to study. At 22, I got sick for 4 years (hiatal hernia), took 4 years to undergo surgery that I needed. In the meantime, I had to find a job, but what job can you find un a country which is sanctioned to oblivion and unemployment rate is 45%. It is a shame for certain people in my country to do certain jobs. I'm from a noble and famous family but not wealthy, still everybody expects us to "not to work". I know 4 languages and understand 5, 6 foot 4 inches tall 220 lbs, good looking, bachelor's of clinical psychology, 134 IQ, from such a family, and I went to work as a diesel mechanic (which is wrongly assumed as one of the most despicable jobs in my country which only addicts and thugs and criminals working as such) because there was no other job available. And I had to beg to get the job. 12 hours a day, no insurance, no respect, danger of death or becoming paralyzed at every moment for 3 dollars a day. Now I'm jobless because they didn't need me anymore. Some other poor guy was going to work for 2 dollars a day instead of me. And believe me not everything in Iran is cheap, 2lbs of meat costs 10 dollars. Now when I lay down and stare at the roof, I question the reason that keeps me going and not committing suicide and I can't find any. All I want to say is that to all those who have the privilege of having a job, any job which is always available (like go and flip burgers as Americans say) that can feed them, just be happy. I laugh when I hear people complaining about prices and inflation in Europe and America. You can work a simple job with all the benefits for 1 hour and buy a pizza, I have to work a dangerous and highly specialized job for 20 hours to buy a burger. I don't blame you for what I have to endure, it has nothing to do with the ordinary people of rich countries. I just want to say, if you have the opportunity, grasp it and don't let it slip away. Appreciate what you have, because billions in the world who are much more talented and capable that you can't even dream about that. And don't throw your lives away by drinking, becoming addicted or suicide, because that's straight up insult to people like me. Again I say, look beyond your country's borders and live, LIVE FOR US TOO
