Vibrato is a natural occurance. There are a lot of singers who "manufacture" vibrato through jaw, tongue and abdomen tremors which is not ideal as it involves muscles which should be relaxed. The purpose of the excercise which moves between two notes rapidly is to maintain flexibility of the cords, a vital aspect of vibrato. The exercise is not meant to imitate vibrato. Thanks for the comment.
Of all the voice-coaching videos on TH-cam, these are the most organized, focused, and challenging. More than just exercises, when these lessons are mastered, you will have a solid foundation in voice control. Not easy, but worthwhile is...
Ian, I am about to hit the streets busking, and I just wanted to say how much my voice has improved and strengthened with just the little amount of time I have been using your videos. (daily, about 2 weeks) I can't wait to see what I can do in six months...thank you, thank you, thank you.
Just started today. I'm very greatful. I've wanted lessons so bad but couldn't afford them. Thanks to you giving free lesson I can now discover my true vocal potential. Very greatful.
Wow,thank you ,that was not only useful but also VERY CLEAR compared to other exercices coaches, this is THE CLEAREST !! i recommand this! subscribed with joy ^^
@coog2011 What you should do is make a mental note of what is happening in your body, eg, throat, stomach, how much air you are using when it occurs. Then try and replicate it for the notes you want to add vibrato to.
@torosax Thanks for the positive feedback. Yes there are a few misinformed people teaching less than ideal ways to produce "fake" vibrato. It really isn't something that can be "manufactured".
@hotznizzle I find that many singers over-do vibrato. Depending on the style of singing something you can try is limiting vibrato to longer notes, or at the end of phrases. I will be sure to record a video on how to apply vibrato in different styles.
This is great, thanks so much. I've been told that vibrato shouldn't be a conscience thing. The only way I can produce is if I imagine swerving between two notes, and it feels very inorganic. When I sing relaxed and natural its just a strait note. Will it become a more natural thing? Should I imagine the swerving between the notes
VERY GOOD VIDEO!!! I see way too many videos on here telling people that they can produce by pulsating their air and other methods... as a musician and private voice instructor it's soo frustrating to see people teaching "fake" vibrato..
Yeah you're singing with your diaphragm, but the vibrato "action" he's talking about takes place in your vocal cords. Vibrato isn't about changing your breathing, which is what the diaphragm does, it's all about the pitch of the notes, which is controlled by the vocal cords. Anyway, These exercises are great, and I never knew all those ways are wrong! I kept trying to create vibrato using my jaw cause that's what I saw other people doing, so thanks! Haha I sing in mostly falsetto because I ha
Hey Ian, would you consider making this video available on a physical CD for those of us around the world, who suffer with poor internet access due to location (rural areas) and signals that often drop, amid a download, or during a class, the screen goes blue, often times for hours on end. If you could offer these in your store, I would purchase all you have! Please consider for us, your students, who wish to study with you. Thank you D Lewis
Am I supposed to exhale while holding a note and wait for vibrato (with good breathing technique of course)? or am I supposed to focus on my vocal cords. Is it something like sheep bleating but more subtle?
Thanks you for doing this I love this series so far its great one question though, what I never really understood was my friends always said I had natural vibrato which to me sounded really bad at the time because there explanation was "not hitting the note but bouncing from that note to another note fast" so I thought that just means I cant hit notes properly right? or is this vibrato
Hey im a girl singer and my throat closes when I sing .. I have a great 3rd register sound and my seconds and first is ok but anytime i sing first or second my throat is trying to support what i do .. How do I get enough air to my diaohram???
I notice that I can achieve vibrato when I hit cetain vowels, but not all of them.WHy is that? It seems to "come on it's own" sometimes unexpectedly when Im xocalizing, but then when I "try to do it" on purpose, I lose it! LOL! arrrgggghhh! Why is that?? Other times, I am able to achieve it by fluctuating my tone alone.
Great video, but why the half-step UPWARD vibrato practice, considering virtually no one has a vibrato moving upward from the main pitch? I see these with other teachers also, and when I ask for an example of a great pop or jazz singer with an upward-moving vibrato, we just hear crickets man !
Ron Robbins at the time (8 years ago) I think I was more focused on the oscillation between pitch rather than the initial direction. I'll have to record myself holding a straight note into vibrato and check it out as a wave image.
one question sir ,. your vibrato is too smooth although I 've been praciting vibrato for around 4 months still I doesn't able to do it like you sir ....and what about the vibrato that SIA has .....
Thee zzzzz made my voice louder without trying but it made the vibrato not pass through ..n I have natural vibration. ? A little but im still tryna do it even better ..
Jacob stole a whole heap of mp3's from my website, put a red curtain image on them and pretended it was his content. He is not a vocal coach, and cannot sing. Ever wondered why he doesn't sing on camera.....?
Vibrato has been a hard skill to obtain. I am a bass and have a few more years before my voice matures, but I cannot create vibrato UNLESS I am in my low register and I'm using head voice instead of chest voice. I've been taking lessons forever, and I can sing vibrato when I have to perform because I get nervous and my vibrato comes out, even though I cannot control it. But in lessons and practice, I cannot do produce it. Sad day.
Isn't it both? You definately need your diaphragm. For the air. But it's your vocal chords that fluctuate with the air passing through? I'm not sure. I'm not a pro singer. Just wondering...
@BostonIrishGirl Maybe they aren't good at knowing exactly what to say and how to explain things immediately; a lot of people need time to think of how to explain something as precisely as possible so that they can teach it to you more effectively instead of making a video of "well, your voice is what controls it, and you kinda go.. Like this.." So give people a break. They're teaching you, You're not teaching them. So while it may annoy you that they aren't looking exactly where you want t

GOOD & HELPFUL LESSON, THANK YOUU!!
@bigsaladin5 Keep it simple. Exhale with good airflow and relaxed throat. It is more subtle than bleating. More like a fast pulse.

great job!
Am I supposed to exhale while holding a note and wait for vibrato (with good breathing technique of course)?
or am I supposed to focus on my vocal cords.
Is it something like sheep bleating but more subtle?

@bla0327 Hey. Have you checked out my video on how to breathe for singing? That will help you out.
@CauseItsVoodoo i think that is what all the exercises are about

Nor bad .like to hear you sing a song.
How do you relax your vocal chords? how can they be flexible?
Thanks you for doing this I love this series so far its great one question though, what I never really understood was my friends always said I had natural vibrato which to me sounded really bad at the time because there explanation was "not hitting the note but bouncing from that note to another note fast" so I thought that just means I cant hit notes properly right? or is this vibrato

But it seems too difficult!!

is it possible for a person to be incapable of doing the vibrato? cuz i find it impossible

This is from Jacobs Vocal Academy.

I have the exact opposite problem. When I am nervous I can't control my vibrato but when I am alone I can do it without an issue.
Jamezuh That's interesting. Perhaps if we ran at each other we could fix each others' problems haha.
I lose control of my breathing in the last one xD curious I don't need the air but I just force myself to breathe and agitate.
Isn't it both? You definately need your diaphragm. For the air. But it's your vocal chords that fluctuate with the air passing through?
I'm not sure. I'm not a pro singer. Just wondering...
mega mind
Cbria well my IQ is 140 so yeah I guess you're right 😂
@@aussievocalcoach nothing wrong with that!!!!
@coog2011 No offense, but your spelling sometimes speaks about the pages you surf...
Can Anyone achieve vibrato?
So you can make sound come out of your diaphragm?
Damn I can't do it. Keep sliding on notes when faster tempo occurs :<
Doesn’t work for me
@BostonIrishGirl
