What is the Difference Between Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering?

  • Hey everyone!
    Today we are answering one of our most asked questions, which is: "What is the difference between bioengineering and biomedical engineering?".
    In theory, they both have technical differences. To start, bioengineering is the broader field which encompasses biomedical engineering. Bioengineering can refer to the use of engineering principles for ALL life sciences and medicine. In the other hand, biomedical engineering is more focused, and specializes in human health care and medicine.
    Truth be told, you can really do the same kind of jobs with both degrees. In fact, universities tend to use the terms interchangeably and usually offer one of the two degrees.
    Hope this video helps clear out some of your doubts and helps you make a decision on which major to pick!
    Don't forget to subscribe to learn more about biomedical engineering through podcasts with students and professionals, tips on how to succeed in college and as a professional, daily vlogs, and more!

    Senior (last semester) Bioengineer at PennState here!! I think this is a wonderful explanation! Some of the jobs of interviewed/got offers from certainly cover the medical aspect of things but also I could go into the food preparation and agricultural side! Both are definitely great majors and PSU even requires BioE students to take BME classes bc they are so interrelated!! Great job on the video :D

    Now, I can really understand the difference between these two degrees. However, as you mentioned, most universities don't do a clear division of these programs. In my university in BME, we can choose to focus on animal/plant areas if we choose the necessary electives, even though this is part of bioengineering.

    Hello, I’m about to start my degree soon and I have a question regarding these two different degrees - I would like to focus on the medical side but primarily vaccines, viruses and generally genetic engineering. I have found many different answers and couldn’t find a conclusive one. Genetic engineering regarding the human body is my primary preference, and if so, which degree would fit more? Bio engineering or biomedical? Thanks ahead!

    • @TheBMELife
      @TheBMELife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      OfficalMcM hi! Thank you for reaching out 😊 genetic engineering can fall under both, BME and BioE. It will depend mostly on your school. Not every BME or BioE program focuses a concentration in genetic engineering, just just make sure you choose one that does. Also genetic engineering can be a Graduate degree as well, since it is a very specific focus. So if you’re interested in grad school, you can also do BME or BioE and then do genetic engineering. Hope this helps!

    Just wondering, I know a bunch of people take the BMS (Biomedical Science) route to then further progress on to Med School. Would you have any idea if doing BME as an undergdad is as valuable as doing BMS ? In other words, would a BME graduate compete well with an applicant who's done BMS when it comes to med school applications? (I've heard you mention that some of your colleagues in uni were tryna get into medicine)

    • @TheBMELife
      @TheBMELife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Emmanuel! Thank you for reaching out :) That is a great question. I can't really answer which one is the best for med school, but I can tell you that from conversations that I have had with a BMS person, they do get to see more of the science and medicine courses during their undergrad. It makes sense because in engineering you have to take several classes in engineering, classes that a BMS doesnt have to take and rather they just learn more about in depth science and medicine. So I do think maybe a BMS will have more advantage in knowledge in a way. That is not to say that as a BME you couldn't compete against other majors when going into medical school. It is indeed true that many of the BMEs I know have gone (i.e. have already been accepted) into medical school. In fact, I have also heard a military surgeon himself who did Mechanical engineering in undergrad and later went into med school, that medical schools really enjoy having engineering students. This is because the core of an engineering degree is solving problems, which there will be a lot in the real clinical setting. So to answer your question, can a BME graduate compete well with a BMS? DEFINITELY! You bring a whole new set of skills that they wont have. Just like they will have a more in depth knowledge of science that maybe you wont have as a BME. In the end, it is really up to your interests. Hope this helps :)

    • @Biomeducated
      @Biomeducated 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheBMELife Good answer, Meri! Indeed, perhaps BMS might have an edge in terms of having already touched up deeper into courses like histology, anatomy/physiology, pharmacology, it doesn't mean that a BME student is not qualified and has the right skills/attitude to learn it in med school as such. For example, in our anatomy class we didn't have to know ALL the muscles, really just very important ones and groups of it!

Whilst the more specific ones are more attracting in the job market? Also I am not american and where I live bio medicial engineering is called medicine engineering so I am wondering if they are the same? Because I dont like chemistry that much and if I am not mistaken there is way more chemistry in bio engineering?

Actually i've opted for bachelors in computer science engineering and the college will start the 1st semester soon(just thought that it would be a broader field- so ill have more career options but i am very interested in BME). I had opetd for math when i was in high school without biology, but im very interested in BME. I want to know if studying a masters course in BME after btech in csc is practical(i want to apply my knowledge of coding and computers in this field ). Will i struggle a lot with biology? What if i manage to cover the basics of biology during my btech(do you have any suggestions about how i can be at par with those who opted for both math and bio)? Are there any other options where they will teach me biology from scratch (because of my lack of knowledge) like integrated btech and mtech (maybe a course with a longer duration)? Is this choice worth it, do you know anyone like me? It would be really helpful if you could create a video on the channel about it for people like me. I'll be waiting for your reply. It’s important to understand that most of the time, companies will NOT have positions titled “Biomedical Engineer” but rather positions like “quality engineer, product development engineer, manufacturing engineer, r & d engineer, etc”. Maybe that’s why you’re seeing such few results!
      But BME is definitely not that big on number of jobs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were about 21,200 jobs in 2019.
