  • Sue Bourne had lived in her street for fifteen years yet she knew practically none of her neighbours. While she relished the anonymity this afforded her she was also nosy and wanted to find out what lay behind the other 115 doorways in her street. She began knocking on the doors and meeting her neighbours and this award-winning film is the story of what she found.

    As as 21 year old with high functioning autism, Adams story made me cry. This is a man who refused to get help for his disability, lived in isolation with little to no money, and died at a very young aged. People like me always say we don’t need help, but this is what could happen if we get that wish, I’m incredibly grateful for all the help I get, and adams story should be a reminder that we often underestimate the idea of help. RIP Adam.❤️♥️❤️

      Agreed. Many people suffer from depression, even those who don’t live alone, and it would be great for their to be more of an online support system that puts people in physical contact with one another.

      Yes Adams story was heartbreaking and more so by the final. Very tragic. I could identify with this documentary as the street where I have lived alone for 26 years, I know only three of my direct neighbours, two of whom have little contact with. The one I do have good contact with is a single lady whose cats I feed when she goes on holiday. Five years ago I broke my leg and she overwhelmed me with her kindness cooking me a meal every evening until my leg got sorted. Then two years ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and went through a two month course of radiotherapy. Though she was still working part time she would drive me to and from the hospital whenever she could. You never forget kindness like that.

    I watched this on tv when it came out, I would have been about 15 I think. The story of Adam always stuck with me and I honestly have thought about him a lot and felt so desperately sorry for his situation. I decided to try and search for the video which lead me to just watch this again and it’s as heartbreaking as I remember. He has always stayed in my memory. I wonder if there are people on my street that are lonely and in need. I want to be a good person and hope that no one has to feel desperate and alone.

I can imagine it must have been difficult to live with Adam, but they could have visited him at least once a week if not only long enough to give him a huge bear hug. I’ll never feel sorry for myself again. I can’t imagine how horribly lonely and unloved Adam must have felt. I’ve had days where my anxiety has kept me up and I could somewhat relate when he said he just wanted to sleep. I know how I felt in those moments but I have had my husband with me. This all makes me a lot more grateful and less critical of the things I now deem mere trifles and very small inconveniences.

    • @2ndhandSue
      @2ndhandSue 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      It definitely was not a complimentary view of New Zealanders. I can't abide the binging and the seemingly lost lives of these young people - they don't seem to have anything better to do. Worse than that, though, is their feeling of entitlement - they don't care that they ruin other people's enjoyment of their own homes and gardens. As long as they are out doing what they like and being as loud and obnoxious as they want to be, they are happy - they feel entitled to force their immaturity onto everyone around them.

      yes!! I hate the binge-drinking of NZ. I was also disgusted by their inconsideration of their neighbours. Unfortunately, they would apologise if neighbours complained but, five minutes later, it would be back to the same chaos. They know that nobody will say anything again, so they just continue. NZers often find binge-drinking funny 🙄. They will think you are uptight if you say it is inconsiderate but they are considerably selfish.

    I can't help but pause and comment. When Sarah is showing Sue the open 'vista' across their backyard, I look at the second or two that the camera lingers on it and am reminded of when I was in Britain and Ireland. So bleak and seemingly perpetually overcast. It's a bit of a shock to the system when you have come from an upbringing where the sunshine is part of life, as opposed to a treat. Even the little time lapse is just a lot of different bits of grey.

      treasurz1 - Yeah bro I hear ya! Felt the same way - it's a typical young kiwi/Aussie group in the UK, everyone plays up a little on their OE. I noticed there is a comment below from JaMarcus 52 about it happening here at home too - if you live next to students or young people, it's gonna happen anywhere! Don't like it? Maybe trying doing the kiwi thing and having a quiet, calm word with your neighbour? Heaven forbid talking it out might actually work!! Don't be that grumpy person who doesn't contribute to a solution... If not, I've always found a few early morning weed eating sessions soon do the trick :)

I would loathe to live next door to such inconsiderate people but, at the same time, every time the guy laughed I couldn't help but smile at his goofy laugh and their care-free lifestyle. But I do agree that this gave a bad picture of all Kiwi's, fuelling the stereotype... welcome to the everyday life of minorities!

    What a lovely lil treat of a documentary, it was unique and i felt like every street needs there own lil story like this, i love listening to my grandfather telling me about his neighborhood during the great depression, i went through the street with him on google earth, he remembered every tree, where the men that worked on the railroads stayed, where his father ran a bookie in the back garage, plus he was a butcher, so they shared there meat with the neighbors since they were considered "well off" cuz they had more food, where the "stinky cat lady" (his words) lived, where he met my grandmother at the 5 and dime store, that he worked at as a stock boy, hes 88 now, and im so happy to have been able to let him go down memory lane, without having to walk around the area, since he is unable
