Mick Mars: The Lost Interview with Steve Rosen (1985)

  • I first met Mick Mars about two years or so before this interview and truth be told, he was not exactly in my Top 10 list of charming people. Shout At the Devil had just been released and Elektra Records, Mötley Crüe’s label, was setting up press. So there I was sitting in a conference room with Nikki Sixx and Vince Neil but no Mick Mars. It pissed me off. About 25 minutes into the interview, Mick sauntered in, sat down in a chair and didn’t say a word. No hello, no sorry for being late. Nothing. I was even more pissed off.
As it turned out, Mick wasn’t really rude as much as he was a bit on the reserved side. He turned out to be a pretty funny cat and though he never apologized for being late, I forgave him.
Cue forward about two years-it could have been three years-and there I was again face to face with the cat in the black hat. Mick showed up on time and was funny, open and talkative. Hard to remember exactly where but I think this interview took place in a rehearsal room somewhere.
We had a pretty cool conversation. Enjoy!

Interesting to hear what guitarists perspectives were on gear and recording albums in 1985. Just 2 couple years before I ever touched a guitar

Mick is great to listen to. He comes off as such a no bs guy. What a true talent he truly is. Have loved his playing since Shout at the Devil.

That was awesome! I Met Mick just about a year after this interview. We were all backstage at the David Lee Roth concert that year. Must have been eat ‘em and smile tour. That was great, a lot of rockers back there at the Forum club in those days.
Does anyone have any idea who was sitting there with Mick? Sounded like maybe a girlfriend, or assistant. Then maybe another friend. Nothing worse than hearing people eating and all the clanking, ha ha. Still very cool. Thanks Steve!!! 🎸👍🏻🇺🇸😎

20:25 When Mick was talking about the huge sound in a tiny amp, I believe he was talking about the Gallien-Krueger 250ML amp. It a lunchbox style guitar amp that has two 6.5 inch speakers, it's 100 watts, has a clean and dirt channel with echo and chorus buttons. Alex Lifeson from Rush used it to record an album also... I have one and it's a vintage amp by now... Rock on....

Yeah, that just reminded me. That sounds like the little Gallien-Krueger I had back around 1989. This guy was walked into our rehearsal studio in North Hollywood to try and sell it, very cheap. So I bought it. It was pretty gnarly, and I’d plug it in to the PA. I don’t know what happened to that. Fun times! 🎸👍🏻🇺🇸

Hey Steve, any Jake E Lee picks??
Would be a good addition to my collection!
Nikki's bass tech back then: Tim Luzzi, I still have my white bass pick from T.O.P. tour that he gave me back stage! 😉👍
