It was difficult to breed the top quality koi which they need to fulfil all the basic requirement for a koi including the selection of good bloodline, good water quality with the variety of minerals, environment conditions, continuous breed modification of koi and so on.
Crazy. I used to buy two year old koi at $200 per pop, imported to California from Japan when I had a pond. I knew that only half of them would survive due to immunity issues. The offspring of those surviving koi were strong as they were immune to local pathogens. And then I noticed that each koi had individual personalities that I learned to enjoy. After that I didn’t care what they looked like.

Its so subjective. I've seen others I think are prettier. This one doesn't look like anything special personally speaking, as I find the colours too blocky. Extraordinarily over-the-top price but probably seen as an investment. Also notice how the photos appear to misrepresent it's hue, showing a deeper red than seen in the live videos. People are extremely compliant to becoming slaves in allowing themselves (in this case) to be dictated by show standards which in turn influences others, instead of using critical thinking.

However many western koi keepers just are being outpriced by wealthy Asian businesses, and that’s a shame that loyal koi keepers just cannot afford highest quality koi. £1.3 million is just over the top. I saw this koi in the flesh at the 2017 AJKS when it won Grand Champion. 101cm is also not to be underestimated.....

Even though it was really big and nicely shaped, that fish wasn’t very nice looking. Maybe it was just the camera but the fish seemed more yellowy then milky white which is often a reason people buy. Not sure if it was worth almost 2 million dollars... (But I do think that it was good other than that and the red was quite vibrant)
