  • This video introduces and explains the differences between ductile and brittle materials for A Level Physics.
A short video that explain the various material properties you need to understand and identify from a stress-strain graph. From brittle materials like glass and a Crunchie to the plastic deformation of ductile materials like copper and a Mars bar.
    Thanks for watching,

Whenever possible, I'll try and do this experiment. You know... for repetitive quality testing purposes.
    I'll need the gym now...

+Guy Riese Thanks. I find it's hard to imagine metals as ductile since in everyday life they seem so hard. But everyone knows about sweets.

Brilliant illustration! Slight nitpick: in the Crunchie and Mars cases you are applying a bending stress whereas in the Wham case (and your previous video on the spring) you are applying a tensile stress.

Would it be possible for you to do an online revision session the weekend before our depth/breadth exam? perhaps for an hour or so. I think there are a few websites where you can stream you computer while allowing us in the chat to ask questions. That would amazing last minute revision!

    • @PhysicsOnline

I don't think I've done this - but that is a tricky area (and useful when you also consider resistors and capacitors in parallel). Very good idea.
