I really don’t think people remember the quests how they actually were. I loved oblivion, but after revisiting it and watching a couple 6 hour plus videos on it, I’ve got to say, quest were really not as much of a strength as I remembered.
Edit; for context I still love the game don’t get me wrong, I just think the majority of quests were poor. Well, i guess it’s really the factions I have a issue with. DB and thieves we’re actually consistently passable, to great.
Fighters guild is meh with ups and downs but with probably a few more downs, like the main quest and the blades. Mages guild can suck my left nut with how hard they fumbled the bag, and the arena too, but the dude who did the arena quests also did the DB so… clearly one was given more time and attention and it’s not that he couldn’t make good stuff but limitations of time allocation sadly.
Oh don’t even get me started on the Gods. They butchered the imperial gods. Ah. And now I’m ranting lol. I do genuinely love the game, I just want them to get better in the next not worse.
Skyrim was a masterclass in a lot of things for it’s time, however quest were not one of them, and a lot of cool stuff potential was really wasted.
If they fuck up hammerfell I’ll be upset. I want cool desert shit Todd.

And Skyrim isn't much more casual than morrowind imo, yes the systems are simpler, but the action and mechanics are improved, still it's a 2011 game that started development in 2003, so it's not like it's even modern by 2011 standards. Still it does everything very well and has a lot of great content, while being accessible, so it's the most popular. It also removed acrobatics, which are the bane of MW and Oblivion.

Great summary! As someone who has only ever seen other people play it and can't really tell them apart, I have to say that this really gives me a great introduction to the series and gives me an idea about why people gravitate to each one. Every time I'm trying to level up a skill in that game, I just find myself thinking: "Why am I wasting my time trying to level up a skill in a game when I can use that time to level up a skill in real life?"
I tried grinding in real life, but it doesn't work as well. People keep jumping in and asking questions and giving you other jobs and basically disrupting your training scheme. I'm going with the hypothesis that the biggest difference between life and an RPG is that in an RPG, only you matter. Everyone else is an NPC. But in real life, everyone is the protagonist in their own little universe, and you really don't want to upset or offend anyone, because that just makes you the "bad guy". And it's kinda chaos, because nobody seems to be able to get a consensus about what's the right thing to do in any given situation, because we're all human beings and not ethical robots or something who can be programmed to do exactly the right thing in every given scenario. Most of the time, it's just a judgment call and there really isn't any perfect answer. And I've got a problem with that, because there isn't really a real, universal scoring system, so nobody really knows how anyone is doing or if you're ahead or behind or what.
Tldr: I love this introduction to the series as someone who knows only the absolute basics of the game and still haven't figured out how to apply this stuff to the real world. If you think I need help, you're probably right.

Morrowind specifically tells you to go out and do freelance work, and establish yourself as an adventurer. During the MQ your boss regularly tells you to go away and get some expirience while he thinks what to do next.
On the other hand, if you do engage with a medallion in oblivion (why wouldn’t you entertain a simple fetch quest from a dying emperor who saved your life?) there’s no brakes from now on. Everything’s going to shit, go save the Martin, battle for this, get the artifacts of that.

I never understood the whole Bethesda games losing RPG mechanics. Maybe they lost traditional tabletop RPG mechanics, but the ability to actually roleplay has been expanded.
I didn't even bother with the story in Fallout 4 or Skyrim because for the first time in a Bethesda game, I was given the freedom to do whatever I wanted. No longer had to choose a class or be limited to major/minor skills. I can specialize if I want, but I don't have to. I can roleplay as an alchemist, doing nothing but harvesting ingredients and selling potions. I can be a mercenary and kill bandits. I can be a thief and just go around fencing everything. It's much easier to just live in these worlds and occupy a role than in Oblivion or Morrowind
In Fallout 4, I just created a settlement and lived in. I explored the wasteland to find rare resources and defended my home from Super Mutants and Raiders. Fallout 4 was incredibly immersive for me and for the first time, there was something to do besides explore. I could actually roleplay and love as a scavenger

I found Daggerfall infinitely more entertaining than the others, despite the dated graphics and other issue that are a result of it being a 90s game. Especially Daggerfall Unity -- At that point it just felt like a fantasy world simulator. And that definitely does it for me. That being said, Morrowind is great in a lot of ways, and I'm kinda mad that things have continued to strip down from there.

Morrowind is an absolute banger. ngl it was a struggle to get into with my dysfunctional zoomer brain, stopped and started like three times. Furthest I got was balmora before loosing interest, finally turned my phone off and gave it a honest try and adored it, played it non stop. Now I'm a bit of a Lore elitest tbh the old lore was goated, much of it got watered down or completely contradictied in later games.
(First game Oblivion, most played Skyrim, favorite Morrowind)
I'm not sure what Skyrim dose better then Oblivion or Morrowind tbh, Morrowind's roleplaying is goat, Oblivion's combat is goat... Skyrim's balance? But I guess that could be subjective, Morrowind's hard levels are arguably better but Oblivion's leveling is broken, so I guess that's Skyrim's acheivement.

Morrowind is my favourite game of all time, played it since I was 13. Still fire it up from time to time. I loved Oblivion too and are tempted to play it sometimes, but Morrowind really feels like entering and discovering a weird alien fantasy culture, and I can become PART of it like no other game. The factions define your character, some are excluding others and I play my way up not just by quests but by skill requirements too. Second favourite game is New Vegas that does many similar things right, however you define your character in that game not by factions but by quest choice. It's a bit more limiting, but the world is more adaptive and dynamic. Both works well, just different game design choices.

Actually there are good parts in every one of these games thats sadly never comes together, its like bethesda doesent learn anything from previous elder scrolls and just starts from blank slate every time, which is a shame. Morrowind had a great immersion, you actually had to explore and find your way around vardenfell, which is did a lot of good for the game, its a shame they added quest markers and direction arrows in later games, another thing is magic, having ability to craft your own spells was so good, the spell system in skyrim is really bad, also the attributes strength, intelligence etc. was a really good system as it gave you more personalisation of your character, skyrims leveling doesent feel as impactfull as in oblivion/morrowind.
