More than a Canal: a History of the Panama Hat

  • Emblematic of hot weather style, the Panama is, counter-intuitively a straw hat from Ecuador, woven from a very spectial local straw. Some of the finest can go for thousands of dollars, though cheap versions can also be found in many a tourist area. And it was added in 2012 to UNESCO's immaterial heritage list.

    The panama hat I wear in this video was indeed made in Ecuador and very kindly brought back to me from Panama by my aunt and uncle.

    I love my Montecristi hats. One was $800, one $500. Each is a work of the finest craftsmanship, like a fine watch, or furniture. They made a few costing $150,000. I would love to see them. A magnifying glass is needed to understand one of these fine creations. I gave my better one to my son. It is not just a beloved thing by him. He makes a point of wearing it when he meets someone from that area. It shows he holds great respect for that part of the world. Art/ Fine Craftsmanship, communicates admiration and respect when you acquire and use these things.

    If I see a man in a white suit wearing a Panama i can expect 1 of 3 things
    1. Im about to lose at poker on a steamboat
    2. Im about to be recruited into the illegal antiquities trade.
    3. Its a Halloween party.

    I wear a genuine Ecuadorian Panama hat during hot days in South Florida. (which is most days) You will see many as well almost everywhere in Miami-Dade County. Many of those of Cuban heritage also wear it with the traditional guayabera.

    The weird thing about Panama hats is that they need a humid climate to stay supple but at the same must avoid rain if at all possible. During my years in Cambodia the Panama was only used in the dry season while the rest of the time I used an Akubra during daytime (not needed after dusk).

Rumour has it that somewhere in the rules and regulations of Army etiquette, specifically the Guards regiments, there is a correct manner of returning a salute when in civilian dress and wearing a Panama.

    I had no idea of the special fibre of the genuine Ecuadorian article!
    In the 90s in NZ I bought a "Panama hat" which I called a "straw hat". I removed the fabric band and made my own from some snakeskin given to me. When I was in a bar in Montmartre, Paris, I had a French guy snatch it off my head, put it on, and utter the (To me cliché) "Tres Chic!". Sadly, the next time I went to Europe to see my daughter in London, in the excitement of meeting her at Heathrow, I left it on a table when we departed.
    A few years ago, since I still had that snakeskin, I resolved to replace the hat. I found not only that all the "straw hats" in the shops were actually Chinese copies made of twisted paper, not real straw, but also nobody seemed to be selling actual "straw" hats.
    I eventually found one in a retro used clothing shop, a little worse for wear. A bit of PVA glue, some felt for the inner band, and some newly cut snakeskin for the band have provided me with a passable replacement.

    I have a Fedora made with a fine mesh weave of grass which I bought in The Azores... There almost every man wears either a mesh-woven Fedora or Trilby because they don't blow off in tbe incessant wind. Not speaking Portuguese, I don't know the name for these mesh hats.

    Hats can be tricky to fit in your luggage (does anyone travel with a hat box these days?) One advantage of a Panama is that you can roll it up. I bought a genuine Panama and it came with a cardboard tube about three inches in diameter. I guess the hat wasn't of the best quality, as a good Panama is supposed to roll tight enough to fit through a wedding ring.

Try walking around downtown Panama or Colon dressed like this and see how long your hold on to your wallet. This hat wouldn't survive one good Panama rain storm.

    I wonder if you could do a detailed comparison of a high quality Panama hat vs a cheap one? There are shoe channels which dissect a shoe to see if it’s well made. It’s ok if that’s not your wheelhouse though. An interesting aside is I remember as a kid in the 1980s going to goodwill and Salvation Army stores and seeing lots of fedoras and Panama hats. Even department stores used to carry them around. However I don’t see them anymore. The generation that wore them and gave them away are no longer present, and not many people buy them.

    • @hathistorianjc
      @hathistorianjc  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think I have quite the expertise to analyze the manufacture of a Panama in great detail, I just know the tighter and finer the weave, the higher the quality, which can be seen at a glance. I'm sure there are other videos somewhere that can give high details though

    • @JH-lo9ut
      @JH-lo9ut 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've heard that a Panama hat of good quality is so smooth and flexible that you can roll it up and thread it through a wedding ring, without it being deformed.
      I personally don't believe this is possible, and if I did own a nice hand-made Panama hat, I would not to try it, but the myth is so prolific, I think there must be something to it. (Maybe not a wedding ring though).
