  • Pooches at Play co-host and NDTF qualified dog trainer, Lara Shannon, meets Marie and her blind dog Mala to provide some tips and advice for helping Mala the Pug to adjust to her life in the dark.
    Lara shows how tapping into a dog's sense of smell and hearing can help them be fully adjusted by up to 3 months.
    Using essential oils to mark out important areas and rooms, to using a wind chime by the back door, Lara talks out through mapping out a house to keep a blind dog safe and help them navigate their way around the home.
    She shows how to keep a home hazard free for a blind dog, how to help them learn to get up and down stairs, as well as providing other general tips and advice to help a blind dog adjust and stay safe.

    How does everyone act so cheerful after their dog loses his or her eyesight?
    I feel my heart break every time I come home and my baby runs to the door eager to see me but cannot. She looks up at me with eyes that cannot see!
    My heart breaks when she eagerly scratches for the car window to be rolled down, thinking that she’d be able to look at the sights like she did before, then sadly turns around and puts her head down when she realizes that it’s still the same...dark as ever.
    I will never stop praying for a miracle.

      Falkor Ik this sounds horrible but you might have to put her down. I’m not that type of person to put an animal down unless it’s suffering. She can’t see or hear so all she has is smell. And you said how she gets scared when you touch her. Since she is so scared and miserable then why make her suffer any longer than she has too. You could also try to warn her before you pick her up by tapping your foot on the ground (vibrations) if you think she is living happily.

    Number one with having a blind dog... DONT CALL THEM if there’s anything between you and them! Make sure the door is fully open. Speak calmly and softly if there are any obstacles nearby. This is step one from my experience with a blind dog.

      @poochesatplay  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@annielyst Hi Julie, do make sure you implement a lot of the suggestions from the video that tap into his sense of smell, textured rugs and not moving around furniture or leaving chairs out etc. You will need to be more mindful of potential dangers and potentially reduce the access to anywhere that could pose a danger if he can't hear you calling out to him to alert of danger etc. but you can use foot tapping and vibrations to help alert to dangers or direct where you want him to go. Talk to your Vet as well who will have some tips. Their sense of smell is their number one sent, so you will have to devise ways to use that as well as vibrations to let him know when you are near and about to pick him up etc. so he doesn't get startled. Check out the instagram account of @pinkpiglettpuppy for some inspiration and best of luck. Lara

    It took me 2 weeks to realize that my dog was blind. I cried for almost a week because I've realized that I've been biased with my other dog. Even though she's the one who's always very excited to greet me whenever she sees me, I often ignore her and go straight to my other dog who's always sleeping. I've only realized it when she's not there to greet me and walk with me everywhere I go. It's like a part of me which I took granted and never appreciated got lost and realized that I should have cherished those moments when it was there.

    my dog has been with me since i was 10, im now 20 and shes 12 and went blind while i was away in school, i wasnt told for a bit and, once i was given the news it was heartbreaking. I had gone home and she scented me from the garage, but couldnt see me and i felt so bad. Once we had gone to the vet and got her insulin, just a few days in and she was just as happy as she was before-if not happier. She is intelligent and knows her way around the house but now does it so confidently and goes up stairs with much more pace and doesnt slow down and doesn’t second guess herself for anything now. She loves being her same old self and loves to just take naps and have her sudden moments of wanting to play as she is a cairn terrior and loves her space but also her playtime. even going on walks we go the same way every day and she knows exactly where she is, always stops at the same other spots to mark her territory and is so happy. Since she lost sight she has become more caring in that she loves to love more than ever and shows her appreciation. We have a fenced yard and she loves being out there on her own laying on the grass putting her senses to work. Point is, it takes a few weeks but as long as your dedicated to helping them they should adjust with no problem. we practically did nothing other then change her diet, schedule, give more love and she is a-lot happier then before. she knows she is doing better and is happy because of it. she knows she is getting help and never reacts and lets us give her the shots she needs twice a day because she knows its working. She even plays with toys now as she never did before and loves to dig up holes as she used to as a puppy then had stopped and loves to every chance she gets.

    My jack russel dog turned blind a year ago because she suddenly got sards in both eyes, really sad. She’s only 6 so that’s pretty young for a dog to turn blind. We haven’t moved the furniture ever since and she definitely knows her surroundings, she can jump up on high couches just like she used to do when she wasn’t blind. She doesn’t hit her head against the dresser etc. I’m so proud of her, when I walk outside with her she knows when to stop for curbs and she knows her way home without walking right through the fences. When people see my dog for the first time they didn’t even knew she was blind just because she is doing everything perfectly like a dog with eyesight does. I’m currently saving up all my money for her to get surgery to get her eyesight back. It’s very expensive in the country where I live, to get really good surgery i’ve been told it will be a total between 4000 and 5000 euros. Cause even though she is a happy dog, I deep down know that she is very sad about the fact that she can’t see

      So sorry about your dog. My chihuahua mix became blind the end of last year. The veterinary ophthalmologist diagnosed it as SARDS and put her on a special diet and supplements (Vitamin C & E, and taurine) to help with some of the symptoms that are common with this condition, but said her sight is unlikely to improve much. I've never heard of a surgery that could help a dog with SARDS regain their sight. I'd appreciate any information you could share about the procedure.

    One tip not enough articles mention: when they say don't move the furniture around, they're not just talking about "don't rearrange and redecorate." It also means day-to-day things like "make sure you push in the chairs every time you're done using them so that they're not sticking out into the path." Once I ran across an article that mentioned that, I couldn't believe none of the others did!

    • @poochesatplay
      @poochesatplay  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@poochesatplay I've done pretty well at keeping everything where it belongs and keeping stuff out of her path, but I feel momentarily devastated on those rare occasions when I do goof up and leave something in the hallway that leaves her either bumping into whatever it is or getting hesitant as she realizes there's something in her path that she can only dimly make out. I get the definite impression she's relying a lot on the contrast in dark colors and light colors, whether or not she can see the colors themselves oh, because I noticed that for example when she's looking up on the bed, it makes all the difference in the world if the light-colored duvet has been pulled back revealing the dark colored sheets, or if a dark towel or item of clothing happens to be lying across the relevant edge of the light-colored duvet. She won't stand there at the top of the steps uncertain whether to take a chance until I figure out what's going on and move whatever item is messing up the contrast she's looking for as a guide.

    1:45 tips you cannot ignore with blind dogs. Always put different smells around the house which will help blind dogs navigate the house easier by smell alone. They will quickly become oriented no matter where they are by where the smells are located and by direction. Different smells in different rooms, it can be anything but not too strong since dogs smell is very good already. Just a little helps.

    • @tejaswoman
      @tejaswoman ปีที่แล้ว

      Other articles I've seen mention that you don't want to overdo it and have it get confusing how many smells there are. They say to maybe stick to three or so, and use the oils very sparingly, a few drops is enough.

      @@poochesatplay I've been trying to pick a scent to help her identify where her steps are to get up on my bed and down again. For the dog door, I've been consistently using peppermint, though she still has trouble sometimes when she either has just woken up or in dim light. I need to find a good lavender that I can use to help her identify the entrance to her crate at night, because it's just heartbreaking when she thinks she's getting in it and she's actually walking along the outside of the frame. I try to guide her before she has a chance to make a mistake, but if I don't succeed, she just looks so confused on realizing she isn't where she thinks she is. It's hard to tell what her vision level is, because there's ample evidence she can still see some, and I can't always predict when she'll have trouble.

    My dog has a lot of anxiety she just was diagnosed with sards on October 8th 2022. I m trying my hardest too to not feel bad. I know I still have to be there for her. I don't think there is any possible way she could regain some sight?

    I"m confuse now they're saying essential oils could be dangerous to the dog. Please advise if that's true.

    • @poochesatplay
      @poochesatplay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      hi Yvette, essential oils are generally safe if 100% natural and no chemicals added and just being used to add into the atosphere or items like bedding etc, in small doses. The biggest issues arise out of certain types of essential oils that well meaning owners often apply directly to the dog's skin or in their food. Have a read of the common ones that can be toxic when applied topically to the dog or orally. www.petpoisonhelpline.com/pet-safety-tips/essential-oils-dogs/

      Essential oils ARE dangerous for dogs. And essential oils are chemicals because everything are chemicals. They are very concentrated oils, they are unsafe. Please do research, there is conflicting information and misinformation. However, essential oils are ultimately unsafe for animals.

      The sources I've seen basically talk about putting a couple of drops on an oven of an oil on an ITEM to make it give off a smell they can detect. I would think it would be the most cautious to put the scent on the underside or somewhere the dog isn't going to be licking it or getting at it directly, such as on the underside of their bed. The danger to the dogs generally is in consuming an oil or having it applied topically to their skin.

    How do you train a puppy born blind? It's a challenge. At least the ones that lose vision as adults use their other senses and reply on memory.

    • @poochesatplay
      @poochesatplay  ปีที่แล้ว

      you can help your puppy adjust to life without sight with all of the same tips. Their sense of smell is still the strongest scent. you can 'train' them to sit, by using gentle touch as your signal. ie: when they sit naturally you can mark with a 'yes' or clicker in the same way you would any dog, you can use a gentle tap once on their bottom as a physical cue and do this consistently and once they are reliably sitting when you do that, you can add the cue word 'sit'. Same with drop etc. gentle touch and guiding can help blind puppies learn what you want from them when you reward desired behaviour and start to give it a verbal cue. Good luck. Lara

    Our sweet lil rescue 12 yo shitzu has succumbed to total blindness due to inheriting glaucoma. Please do not bred animals without knowing if they may carry a gene prone to this disease. A simple blood test and eye exam will foretell should one parent carry this awful gene. It is a horrible painful situation for you and mostly your fur baby especially if you do not realize the signs to look for. Mainly eye pressure checks anything over mid forties is having a 24/7 Migraine.
    We plan to implement the above video recommendations at our home and we pray her journey in resiliency is an easy process rather than what she was dealt so far.
    Thank you. I truly hope and pray people begin to think about the animals welfare first and foremost. It’s true, it’s very hard for the human side.
