The crescent shaped bone plate was commonly used in the 19th century. Its shape permitted it to be placed next to a round dinner plate. They were designed to hold chicken or fish bones discarded from the diners main plate. Later years, it was used as a convenient side plate to serve cold salad with hot food.

The pan pastels are water solvable. They all stack/screw together with one top a keep them in the covered palette. Love them, pastelmat works for all media. Pastel pencils on top for any details. They are so vibrant.

That piece is gorgeous! I would've never thought to put pastel UNDER gouache or watercolor. On top, yes. I admire how brave you are where you just dive in, feet first. I'm glad you liked the sketchbook. The card insert explains why the pages curl and how to deal with it. I can't wait to see what else you paint in it. Lemme know when you fill it and I'll send another! 😂

I think maybe the pan pastels can be screwed together to make a cylindrical stack and that's why only one of them had a lid. The plastic holder is meant to be a palette of sorts, so yes, it's a lot of plastic, but I don't think they intend for it to be single use. Both of these art supplies have been on my radar, so maybe I'll get them for Christmas. I've got plenty to play with in the meantime.

Happy Birthday! I treat myself on my birthday too, why not? This year it was to increase my supply of pan pastels! I love how they blend. I mainly use mine in my encaustic work, but now you've challenged me to try them with my watercolors. I store mine in the trays by color group. Stackable, easy to store and much easier to find the color you are looking for as opposed to them being all screwed together. Keep enjoying the journey!

Happy Belated Birthday, Kristy! 🎉 Wow! You got all 4 seasons of the Holbein gouache sets….and the Pan Pastels! Nice! I have a sample set of 8 of the Holbein pastels watercolors and they’re so beautiful and a modest set of Pan Pastels but haven’t made much use of them yet…but I will and think they’re really lovely too. I think Golden, who owns them now, should make half pans Pan Pastels because each pan lasts a long time and the pigment is very intense. I have a set of Turner acrylic gouache and it’s nice, but dries so fast and just doesn’t have that feel of real gouache. I think it works best for underpainting or maybe some areas that are set and you don’t want reactivated. Once acrylic gouache is dry, it will not budge!❤️

I need help and this is long... I'm SO sorry!! I am an oil painter and I also use colored pencils and paint pens for art journaling. I started incorporating watercoloring into my art journaling and am finding myself going down the path - thanks to your passion and fabulous explanations! I already purchased inexpensive watercolors (Grabie) for my art journaling and some good brushes (from experience of purchasing inexpensive ones - never again). I did purchase a Sakura Koi travel set of 30 paints and a Canson 5.5 x 8.5 pad for practice. However, I am now wanting to learn how to watercolor properly. I'm not experienced enough to correct as you explain in your videos and I don't want to get disillusioned. Here's my problem: I am SO confused about what to purchase as a beginner for two reasons: 1. When I started oil painting I was frustrated pretty much early on using "student" quality supplies and materials. So after spending money on those, I switched to "artist" quality paints, canvases, paper, etc. I was much happier and was more inclined to continue - especially when people wanted to purchase my paintings (THAT was a surprise!!). I found the same frustration with the colored pencils so I am much happier with artist grade. They are much easier to use. 2. I started watching your videos and learning how the different paints and paper work. And you like so many and you like palettes but say to purchase tubes because they are better quality. So... without spending a fortune but wanting to build a quality arsenal of paints, paper, and supplies so I don't get anymore frustrated, what would you recommend I purchase next for paints and paper? Just go for the tubes and empty pans and which paper? I have your palette and brushes in the case for sitting in our botanical gardens in my Amazon cart as well. Great place for inspiration and peace. I'm excited about the colors in your palette. I'm also now thinking I need to add an eradicator brush (too much too soon?) HELP PLEASE?

    • @KristyRice
      @KristyRice  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Tubes are a big investment. And they’re are brands whose premade pans are good. Roman Szmal is my current favorite besides my own palette (lol, biased). The premade pans are amazing quality, no extra fillers. Affordable price too.
I recommended 100% cotton watercolor paper, cold press. It’s just awesome.
I haven’t painted with any other brushes than my own for almost 3 years now and I own a sampling of pretty much every popular/super fancy brush there is :)

Kristy has wonderful videos where she goes through different watercolor brands and tests them all out. I created my own set by watching and making a list favorites. This plus Kristy’s pallet, and a Windsor and Newton pallet, is what I use most often. Same goes with paper, watch Kristy. I have bought a bunch of brushes, ( some very expensive) not a single one comes close to Kristy’s brushes. I LOVE them! I have both sets, and her travel brush. I have two sets of the first, and I’m waiting for my second set of her second set.😊 just cause sometimes, one goes hiding, and I can’t do without any of them. 😊😊
I agree, don’t waist your time with the less expensive watercolors or paper, just frustrating! Ps Kristies book is great too

That’s a great idea of creating a personalized palette, along with Kristy’s palette. I have watched a number of her videos already (unashamedly binge watching), so I’ll go back through and take good notes. I already have taken some about particular brands and colors. Thanks for the tip about her books. I know I need to do some studying.

They were bone dishes. Victorians had something for every thing you could one-time

I am so sorry for your loss.
The dish, I believe, was used for bones.

Wait... I'm not sure, cause I can't get through the entire vid before asking .. doesn't one have the lid and the rest stack up under the one with the lid... I'm talking about the pan pastels... Like how your ceramic dishes stack, with the one lid!?

So... Ummm... Imma tell the esposa that Kristy said to take your eye shadow for my art... At $60 what for what!? I'm not even gonna start with how ridiculous make-up prices are... However, that explains the cost of our art supplies!!!

Yes it is indeed called a "Bone Plate" which was first used during the Victorian days ...Because God forbid you showed some skin in your choice of fashion or placed a chicken bone on the tablecloth during dinner! Thus the invention of the Bone Plate....Oh and yes you still not show your knees in public til the Roaring Twenties!!!....God bless, Rus from Bucks County Pennsylvania ❤️🖌🎨🤓
