However, Lubbock is closer to Ruidoso & Red River,NM when snow skiing season arrives. And, closer to the Cool mountains when HOT Texas summer s sizzles your bones ! I am a 72 year old veteran. I’ve been watching & following the Red Raiders a long time. Tech’s National Championship game was when they beat Colt McCoy & Texas to knock them out of the National champ running. That is their biggest “ Trophy”. The Red Raiders obtained their mascot name after Quanah Parker and the Red Raiders of the Llano Estacado. Quanah, TX was named after Quanah Parker. Texas Tech was originally the Matadors. That’s where the Native Hispanic influence became prevalent in Tech’s Architecture & overall Aesthetics of the campus. PS. The Greek word for mascot is witch, sorcerer.
