      100%, like he worked for WWE for 4 years, which doesnt seem like a lot compared to some talent but, the 4 years he was in were WILD and he definitely had his moments. Regardless of him never going back again or not (and as he's said, he was offered it twice...) he still experienced stuff that 99.9% of wrestlers could only dream of and worked with some of the absolute best in history!

      @@cankarahan8013 with the walls of jericho there are some different factors that can make it hurt more or less and some of them are in neither persons control. Height plays a factor, flexibility also plays a big factor. I wrestled in indies in Nova Scotia and British Columbia, and taking crabs, walls etc from shorter guys always sucked it hurt the quads so much, but if a taller guy did it, i barely felt it unless they really squatted.

    Anyone who doesn't follow wrestling, or shows much interest would probably take a glance at Maven's career and dismiss it as something that simply came and went.
    But look closely and you'll see that he was in the BEST situation to deliver arguably the best educational and entertaining content in this day and age. He's a modern day wrestling archivist who can speak completely from experience--and be completely credible. A CHARISMATIC, BRILLIANT, WELL-SPOKEN WRASSLIN SCRIBE.
    He had a long enough career during a golden era and worked with many of the greats. He was trained in both old school and more modern ways, essentially getting the best of both worlds. In turn, he's able to impart knowledge in the most informative and enjoyable manner that we all look forward to. All his content has been a treasure trove of knowledge, and this tier list is just more icing on the layer cake of dropkicks and wrestling know-how.

    The other key difference in a safe Tombstone is being taller than the person you're giving it to. It helps a lot with keeping their head off of the mat, which is why he was so stellar at giving them. Few people matched him in height. Owen should have known better and damn near paralyzed Austin for good. Also. I didn't know this as a kid but the reason the super kick sounds so good when Shawn delivers it is he slaps his thigh. There are a couple of sad ironies about the Owen Tombstone:
      1) Back when he was in WCW, Austin had performed the sitdown Tombstone and actually injured a Japanese wrestler (I believe it was NJPW legend Masahiro Chono). Supposedly, he warned Owen to not to perform the move with a sitdown.
      2) Thing is that Owen used performed the Tombstone with a kneeling bump, which is a ltitle safer than a sitdown. He went against that for that match with Austin and the rest is history

      As people have stated, sit down vs standard tombstone changes a lot of the dynamics. Sit down being that there is certainly much tighter window, as when you hold someone vertically you could tell very easily if their head clears your knees for a safe delivery. With regards to the actual comfort of giving it, I think Mark said he was happy to stop doing it as it is a lot of force going to his knees, where as sit down disperses over a wider area.

Glad to know and see why the wrestlers who are icons in the ring, are there for a reason. Big kudos to them in not only making impactful finishers, but also ones that kept their opponents safe 💯

    Great video Maven! I'd love to see a video about vice versa: "Which WWE Finishers are the Most Painful to the User?" For example, the leg drop messed up Hulk Hogan worse than the guy he gave it to and Randy Orton's RKO was part of the reason he needed back surgery. I also think moves like the backstabber (Carlito) and codebreaker (Y2J) hurt a lot... especially delivering it anywhere outside of the ring.

    I gotta say between this channel and Stevie Richard's channel, really good insight into the wrestling world and how things "really" work. I've been a wrestling fan for over 40 years now. I was around for when WWF hit it big (and I still remember when Iron Shiek lost the title to Hogan setting off the big explosion for the industry), WWF fell off the map in the early 90s, WCW went through all sorts of highs and lows, WWF's Attitude era to WWE and everything in between. So it's always fun seeing so much discussion involving the business.

I used to do security for concerts [now I run lights for them], and at a show in around 2004 I was in the barricade catching crowdsurfers as usual. The normal procedure is to work in pairs, one goes up on the barricade [around 2 feet in the air on a step] and the partner stands behind to the side to put a supporting hand on the back of the catcher, to absorb the impact, then grabs the patron and helps guide then down. This time my partner decided to hold me up by the belt and wasn't paying attention. He held me up long enough for the patron to wiggle into a standing 69 position. that is when my partner lets go suddenly and bails on me to grab his own surfer. I am now in a precarious position, about to lose my balance, only 1 way to go: DOWN. I hold him as tight as I can and perform a controlled fall: tombstone from the bottom rope onto a hardwood floor. I caught his head and shoulders in my lap and he was fine. I'm 6'4, 300+lbs and a lifelong Undertaker fan, anyone else would have injured him by dropping him or spiking him. Medics checked him out and released him back into the sea, I ended up catching him again later and he got kicked out [1 time over the barricade is rock'n'roll, 2 times is trespassing]. I still feel it in my right knee 20 years later.

    7:38 I heard you mention the RKO (or Diamond Cutter to some) recently on that live you did. As a major OG fan of wrestling (but stopped watching before the PG era), I never knew ppl held DDP's/Randy's finisher in such high regard. It always reminded me of a half-assed/more whimsical Stone Cold Stunner. I mean if you consider it the most popular finisher of all time, and I would've never even thought to add it to the top 100, that gives me pause for thought. So I'll be opening my mind, and lookin' at it from your perspective.

    I’d be interested to see someone compare how moves evolve.
    E.g. Jeff’s original Swanton with how he lands it now. Always looked like he rolled through, but now it looks like it sucks to take.
    The pedigree seemed to take the opposite journey, because HHH originally didn’t let go of people’s arms.

    • @greedoshotfirst1
      @greedoshotfirst1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      When Jeff first started doing the Swanton, more often than not he would just barely brush his opponents arm and take most of it himself. But as his injuries and wear piled on his body, it changed and now he lands almost entirely on his opponent most of the time.

      Also, deeper dive into how Wrestlers deliver moves differently. Like Kevin Nash Powebomb where he usually let the other wrestler drop compared to smashing them into the mat.
      I also think that Taker/Kane Tombstone Piledriver is not really comparable to the one that Owen gave Austin or Cactus to Hunter.
      Obviously, the list was about Maven taking the moves, but I still would appreciate further videos about the in-and-outs (kinda like Stevie Richards)@@greedoshotfirst1

    A Tombstone and a Piledriver are apples and oranges in terms of fundamental safety. You're either not being supported by the guys knees as well as holding onto him for additional support, or you are. That sit-out variant we used to often see pre-2000 REALLY depends on both guys knowing what they're doing, and even then I don't think it was ever risk-free.

    • @scottdaniels8129
      @scottdaniels8129 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Ya I don't see how you put them in the same category either. They were good with even Linda McMahon taking a tombstone. Meanwhile a top-tier worker in Owen Hart broke Stone Cold's neck with a traditional piledriver. Even to a layman like myself it's obvious the tombstone provides a significantly higher degree of control and safety

      Ditto. They have to either go minutes with those capsules in their mouth or find a way to get it put in their mouth without the audience noticing. I wonder if that secret was hidden from Maven.

  • @SmithCommaBenjamin
    @SmithCommaBenjamin 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think the common denominator that Maven says, without saying, is WHO is giving the move. The pros protect you. A spear from Goldberg probably hurts more than one from Edge.
    I also heard that Hogan's leg drop was lighter than light. All the force went on his own hip, which he says is the number reason to all of his health problems. He regretted not just using a sleeper hold, especially since his 24" were such a mainstay of his character. He destroyed his body, to protect his opponent.

    • @Sharikacat
      @Sharikacat 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Walls of Jericho, like a lot of submission moves, probably depends on how much pressure is being applied, something that Jericho would have some control over (can't make it too loose, though), and something a more flexible person could take more of without feeling pain. I believe the change Hunter made to his Pedigree is that he releases the underhooked arms a lot sooner so the person taking the move has their arms available to help take the face bump.
