Dude the Taylor 614 was my dream guitar for years. In fact, some of my old passwords I used used to include the phrases 'wantsa614', ha. I've turned 100% into a Martin guy, though (although the McPherson Carbon Fiber guitar I have is crazy good).
My favorite acoustic guitar rig is actually the Helix. I have a Baggs Venue DI, but I think the Helix gives you a lot more, and as a pure DI it sounds better to me, but it's also a lot more money. But if you could ever splurge and throw and Orange Acoustic Preamp on your board - that's about as good as it gets in my opinion (at least as good as I've heard).

I use my Taylor 816CE and my Taylor T5z. I used to use an LR Baggs Paracoustic DI but now I am using the T-Rex Soulmate Acoustic and I absolutely love it! It sounds pristine and has so many useful features. It has 2 sets of stereo outs, XLR’s and 1/4”, tuner, compressor, reverb, delay, boost, chorus and even a looper, all in an extremely high quality built pedal.

Love my Taylor 514CE-L30 - been playing it for a long time now and still love how it actually sounds like a guitar when plugged in! Perhaps one day I'll upgrade to an 814... but in the mean time, I'm very happy :)

Love the video man! Awesome job! I felt I should share my experience with acoustic guitar considering I’ve been leading worship for about 10 years now. Ive learned that your acoustic guitar is never justified when playing live unless its fitted with a pickup that comes close to faithfully reproducing its specific tone. I’ve used them all and the LR Baggs Anthem or Lyric eliminates all the issues I’ve had in the past. No effects or EQ needed. I simply plug into a DI and thats it. A close second is the Taylor ES2 but even that has unpleasant sounds and i had to use the digital mixers precision EQ to cut all the offending frequencies. My advice is to make it simple and natural by investing into Lyric/Anthem. It’s a simple swap if you already have a LR Baggs Element installed.

The Shure Transmitter is a Great tool, not cheap but good and worthy. I sold mine when I stopped leading Worship in church and sold it last year, and it sold well :-). And the LR Baggs is an awesome tool either. Had that some years ago as well when it came out. Many would add some effect pedals instead of leaving that to the FOH, but that‘s a solid base. Not Talking about the Guitars….

Great video! Your guitar sounds really natural through the pickup. I'm going with a Taylor 214ce dlx (ES-2) into a TC Helicon Play Acoustic. I use the Body Rez on the Helicon for a bit of tone shaping, and then a touch of reverb also. But this pedal also gives me vocal effects like Adaptive EQ, Pitch Correction, Reverb, and a ton of other things that I don't always need, like vocal harmonies, which if buried in the mix a bit, make it sound like EVERYBODY in the room is singing! The 214ce has maple sides and back, so it's a little more woody sounding than most Taylors. I say it has the woody-ness of a Martin or Gibson with the clarity of a Taylor. When I listen back to recordings, it sounds like I have a mic in front of it. Thanks for making all these videos, of which I am now diving down the rabbit hole!

Love this. Love the tone on your Gibson. I have a bright £500 vintage guitar where the tone is bright and I have a £1300 taylor 320ce which is a mahogany guitar and the tone is beautiful, deep and full. I like your wireless set up...might have to take that on. I seem to find myself tripping on my cable.
I love your pedal board and really helpful for when I am playing with a band and totally agree with what you said about reverb and delay. Thanks for sharing! Really helpful!

I’m more of a Dreadnought type, Martin would be my choice.
D-35 is my main horse, but at one point I was SO inclined to purchase a 614, she sounded amazing.
At the moment I play solo and delay and reverb are the tools that help me cover some other bases.
    Thank you for sharing this!

Thanks for this video. I play a couple acoustics as well. My main guitar is a Martin JC-16 with a Fishman Prefix onboard, straight into the console. Works great. But after 15 years of constant play the frets are in desperate need of replacing. Saving up for that. My second acoustic is a Yamaha FG830. Absolutely love this guitar too, but with the K&K pure mini installed it really needs some gain and eq shaping. I appreciated hearing your experience with the venue pedal. I have also been interested in the session.

Hey Jake. Great video! Just a note of clarification, the Session is not the same thing as the Venue. The Session is really more of a Preamp for an acoustic meant to subtly color the tone and compress whereas the Venue is designed as more a DI with built in EQ. The little brother to the Venue is really the Para DI, which shares a lot of the same features. Cheers.

    1. you can't compare the J45 to anything its so good and Im a taylor fan but i love my 322.. also I have the Venue, FX out to the Sessions into the Lr Baggs Reverb back into the Fx loop.. The Venue and Sessions are two totally different pedals, but work so well together.. I just added the Reverb, but I highly recommend the Venue paired with the Sessions.

I had a Taylor 414ce. Loved it, but I actually like my Breedlove guitar that much more.
I also use the fishman tonedeq. I’d put it up against any other acoustic DI or processor. In fact, I did just that in the store. The sound was far more vibrant than anything else I tried.
The G7th capos are superior to every other capo for one reason. Spring loaded capos can only give you one tension.

Thanks for posting. I too am a worship leader and currently have a beatiful custom built Taylor guitar with ES1 pickup and run it through an LR Baggs Session DI. The Taylor has a figured mahogany back and sides. I'm looking at buying a second guitar and am looking for a dreadnought and heavily leaning towards the J45 but it also has mahogany back and sides. Maybe I will look for a Martin D35 with rosewood back and sides for a different sound because I'm looking for something that sounds warmer. I do seem to lean towards the J45 because I like how it feels, plays and sounds. Any input from you would be appreciated...thanks

Thanks for sharing! I’ve wondered why there aren’t more videos like this. I’m in “paralysis of analysis” trying to purchase my “forever” guitar. I’ve always been a Taylor fan, but I have really been drawn to Martins lately. If it was just for me and the sound, I would go with a Martin D18 or 28, but because I’m plugging in so much on Sundays I’m leaning toward a Taylor 7 series or Grand Pacific. Any thoughts?

I use a Taylor K24 w/ virtually the same setup as you, i.e., Shure Wireless and LR Baggs DI box.
I use a Thalia capo (custom cross inlay in Hawaiian Koa to match the Taylor K24). For picks, I’ve been using wood lately to mellow the sound a bit, either Thalia or Riversong (they each have a unique sound and I recommend both).

Hi Jake. I want to ask you which guitar to pick as a beginner? Electric Guitar or Acoustic Guitar?
I am keyboard player and I want develop a new skill for my worship band. My band have 2 keyboard player every week, one is piano player & the other (which is me) is playing pad, synth, orchestral instrument & directing my whole team. I also who is responsible to make a backing track & operate it with Ableton.
The problem start when my second guitar player become unavailable. I’ve feel our sound become ... I don’t no how to describe it but can you imagine piano sound trying to imitating acoustic guitar sounds? I feel it is not the way to play piano in worship songs. Usually it sound simpler.
So Since I can make backing sound myself I’ve been thinking to learn guitar and record it as a track or at least a guide to other player. As I love to work behind the screen for producing I think the sound of guitar is the most difficult one to produce with virtual instrument.
That why I need your opinion which guitar to pick as a beginner.
Any option will be very much help me, Jake.

Great video and great rig, but I feel like your acoustic guitar sound would improve if you upgraded your LR Baggs element pickup to the full Anthem or Anthem SL. I’ve found that the piezo + mic captures a truer acoustic tone over just the piezo in the element alone. I made a Martin D-16 with the element and switched to the Anthem and I will never go back.

The strap on your Taylor is not nylon, but cotton. I really love these straps I have them on all my guitars, have been using them for 10+ years. I find them way more comfortable than nylon straps, but they get stained very easily as the material absorbs liquids.

Just built an acoustic guitar pedal board for my church. Power is coming from a voodoo labs power supply. Signal chain is Boss Tuner, LR Baggs Align Session, LR Baggs Align DI. Next years budget will be used for the shure wireless system. Just a warning the Align Session pedal is not a DI it’s a gain/effects pedal, you still need to run it to a DI.

Hey Jake, great gear list! However, I would hesitate to recommend the GLXD gear. GLXD operates in the 2.4 GHz wireless spectrum, which is also occupied by WiFi. There are stories all over the internet of people who have issues with their GLXD gear experiencing dropouts due to interference. I have a good friend at a satellite campus I work with who has personally experienced these issues. I’m sure you have personally had good success with your GLXD gear, but lots of other people have not been so lucky. In general, I recommend avoiding any pro audio gear that uses 2.4 GHz and recommend something like the QLXD gear instead.

Hi Jake...you do great videos...enjoy all of them...pace, content etc. If its ok to add a bit of other perspective...
    GUITAR AND SOUND:
I have played a lot of name brand eg 514 and the rest...some werent real great...and conversely cheap have some great guitars especially the Cort Earth Mahogany is unbelievable for the price. Get one that sounds good acoustically first, has good intonation and bring a tuner with you to check harmonics...hard to change on an acoustic if its out too far. Try tuning open then play a, c and e chords and listen for smearing...like it just doesnt feel right...each chord should 'ring'.
I owned a Taylor 214 Koa bit like yours, beautiful...with the famous pickup behind the pins etc. I ended up getting rid of all them and going with a mic based system.
    Why?
Because no matter what you do, the saddle transducers are brittle, edgy and remove the dynamic range considerably especially in the context of worship which straddles the spectrum much more than pop. No matter what I used, the sound could not compete to a studio mic'd guitar. All that transient energy, the development of the sound in relation to the resonant body etc is all lost and becomes quacky under tension.
I tried hybrids (and still have) eg LR Baggs Anthem, the irig acoustic stage etc for a while which are ok but fiddly, nice feedback control etc but it wasnt until I did a custom setup with a rode videomicro of all things (after using it for a cajon mic). Id be happy to pm you the diff...in fact I have heaps of mics in the studio but for recording, the rode is actually up there and its robust too.
Your hardware looks and sounds great. The taylor is beautifully made, looks great but it has such a stiff top with no real feel and they go flat with anything less than 12-53 in a 80/20 bronze, the phosphor is just so so bright. I ended up with Seagull but the entry level (after trying the other midrange) because it doesnt have binding which allows the top to be more resonant, sensitive and dynamic...soft to wide open. Anyway, the mic rig is just some off the shelf bits mixed and matched. Pic is below...sure you can see it...but the sound and feel...wow. (the other mounts are Fishman triple play)
    photos.app.goo.gl/uSCEDXt9cfsCAN948
Its definitely comparable to a studio mic'd sound and it sits better in the mix because the fundamentals and harmonics are not obscured by travelling through wood first...a lot more present
Add to this, great cables like van damme low capacitance (or analysis plus if you can manage the cost), shortest lengths etc and each piece adds synergy for a magic tone which is inspiring to hear as well as play
    PICKS:
Celluloid's get slippery with sweat. Once you try eg Dunlop Standard with the rough area, the comfort is great and I would recommend you sort through the range. 0.60 is used for gentle strumming...its soft all over and for soft sections is really good. I use a 0.73 as the general purpose and for really loud rhythmic go to a 0.88mm (and is good for electric too), use a multi pick holder on the strap on mic clip version.
BTW With the comments below...I have a friend who is part of a huge OEM supplier. Some of those guitars mentioned below come out of exactly the same factory; entry-mid gibsons, gopherwood etc; you would be very surprised

I've been a worship music leader for about 41 years now and I have a pretty good following and recently been honored by our congregation. I bring whichever guitar I feel like to play on Sunday from a $300 to a $3000 guitar, a harmony pedal, and an acoustic guitar effects pedal. I realized that it's not the guitar or effects but it's really what you do and how you do it 🙏🙏🙏

online acoustic guitar a/b is not fair. Every guitar is different. Could be even which strings you are using and/or how long they have been on it.

I love Martin's cozy full body sound. They're made in Nazareth, NY, my LORD and SAVIOR YESHUA GOD ALMIGHTY's carnal body carne up in Nazareth. They were founded 1933, YESHUA GOD ALMIGHTY founded the church when HE was 33. The company was founded by CHRISTians and seemed to receive worry ideas that shaped the industry.

If you're going to mention guitar strap, why not mention LOCK connections, seen you had on it
Also, a pick, whatever, ,the pick is the cheapest thing to try many varieties to enhance tone
Also, people treat acoustic guitar like "good enough". But in my world we do a lot of acoustic worship, so I've put much effort and use best products, high quality internal mic/ pickup combo, etc to get a true high quality sound, I'd encourage others to go high quality before wasting $ on cheap
    Grace Designs
    Radial, are also good preamps
