King Crimson! Great surprise to see a reaction of them. Loved listening to them in 1972 when I first came across them. I think they began in 1969. Greg Lake, on bass, went on later to be a founder of Emerson Lake and Palmer. His DNA is all over this song.
He said this about a lot of groups. I’ve heard at least three different guitarists mentioned as “his favorite”. I think he was rather generous with praise. Also, it was such a fertile period in music and he was right in the middle of it. Substances might have also played a role. Not to take away anything from KC, just wanted to mention that.
Not just the strings are produced by the Mellotron on this song. The brass sounds also (the thing that sound like ship siren) and maybe flutes. KC early albums had a distinc sounds and recorded by microphones on internal speakers of MK II and Marshall head and cabs and a lot of overdubs for that very thicks sounds.
I hear Crimson and Atomic rooster ( group of Palmer) and the nice ( group of Enerson) before the legend trio band. ELP Is Born . . .my age Is 10 years old at that times.
Among the greatest LPs ever recorded! In the winter of 1969 I bought tickets to a concert. King Crimson was the "warm up" band. To this day I can't tell you who was the top billed band I actually bought the tickets to see. That's how blown away I was at seeing KC for the first time! RIP Greg Lake - his vocals were always superb!
Had the opportunity to see King Crimson about five years ago now, and it was one of the major live music experiences of my life. I have been to about 500 concerts since 1975, and the Crimson show was a complete audio overload of my senses. I had seen Robert Fripp a couple of other times, with The California Guitar Trio and the King Crimson show was NOTHING like that. Intensity ruled the evening, and did not let up until the end. Amazing.
Great reaction ! I think I was 16 when I got this album. It was a must have. "the fate of all mankind, I fear, is in the hands of fools" now more relevant than ever.
Wow, aside from some fellow stoners listening to this in the 70's, I've never seen anyone react to this song. Way to step out of the box my friend. This, by itself would have got a Sub. From me...... But you already have it. Keep em coming.
Excellent, no one reacts to this amazing song from arguably the first Prog Rock Album. Great tune and lyrics that haunt, that entire album is worth a review, tremendous stuff from Robert Fripp, Greg Lake and co. It does not get much better than this. I had this album in 1969, it helped change music for me and for the better. Unreal year for music, try the title track, you will love it. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
WOW! This song is just as pertinent today as the day it was so eloquently written! It's a sad song, but I want the whole planet to pay attention to it.
Excellent synopsis by the way…much more knowledgeable and deeply interpretive than others that purport to “react”. “Great job” (from a 71 year old who experienced this music in his youth).
'The fate of all mankind, I see, is in the hands of fools' refers to Nixon and Brezhnev, I think, who had their hands on the nuclear button. So the knowledge that is a deadly weight, is the nuclear physics that made the atomic bomb a possibility. That would be my interpretation at least. Nowadays, you can still make it relevant to the current age, with the knowledge without rules being social media. And there are still a lot of fools in power, or trying to get back in power, all over the world.
Yes. 😰 This song is still relevant. King Crimson scared me when they were new. Especially "Twentyfirst Century Schizoid Man". 😱 I'm 72now and they still scare me! At least I'm not into acid since 1969.... 🤔🤷🙄😆😆😆💋💖🌵👵🐺🖖
Emerson, Lake and Palmer's Karn Evil 9 from Brain Salad Surgery is a musical and lyrical tour de force. It goes for half an hour and is in three parts, I think you'd enjoy it. Greg Lake on vocals, obviously.
A 50 yr KC follower here. Robert Fripp led multiple ensembles….that kicked down doors in so many genres…. And he never played the hedonistic rock star… The only ones…..
It's been too long since I've listened to this song - thank you. Watching the accompanying video I felt that King Crimson was echoing the sentiments of WWI poets (such as Wilfred Sassoon). Bleakness made beautiful.
Amazing song, loved your reaction to Thanks, This sounded like a demo version or something? Try the original from "In the Court of the Crimson King" album, it's even better.
Great reaction to a deep cut. I love this song, and listen to it when I'm feeling especially nihilistic. When I hear it in any other mood, it immediately reminds me of our current circumstances, how f@
Interesting version of a classic song. The bandleader Robert Fripp loves putting out different versions of the band's songs. It really sounds to me like different keyboard and percussion work was done here. Still a Great and heartbraking song. This song was released in 1969 during the height of the Vietnam War and the Cold War. The tone suggests the skepticism of the era towards lesders who many felt had mislead the public about the Vietnam War and the danger of Nuclear Annihilation.
For decades various iterations of this band have produced brilliant, masterful, cutting edge music. I like all of it. I love most of it. But “Epitaph” remains my favorite KC song. Makes as much sense today as 50+ years ago.
While this is a good version, the original from the album Court of the crimson king is fuller and the use of the mellotron more intense and makes the song even sadder. There are also some background guitar parts inthe original that are left out of this version. IMO The album version is a better version .Hope you give it a listen and compare the two.
@@36karpatoruski Greg's emphasis and timing on this version seem off kilter and the drums are a shadow of the original version. You are spot on about the mellotron, this version overall seems like it's a rehearsal.
dude, your break down nailed the vision I believe Robert Fripp intended, as we were still in the "Cold War" era and Nam justt thrown in for practice...rock on JMBoy !! perhaps a ELP video is in your future...
There were 4 of us in my car , 4 sets of headphones just driving around being 60’s teenagers. We had to pull over, we were all overcome from what was destined to surely be the fate of mankind. Will we never learn . We looked at each other knowing our numbers were due.
KC was the pillar of progressive rock. This was the base. I hear a bit of the Moody Blues and Doors on this album. I've forgotten which Russian impressionist got a nod, but I remember listing to that piece at least once and heard the connection. Ultimately, any band that's influenced by KC must sound a bit like them.
Great reaction! This is an alternate mix. I've never heard this version... still powerful and haunting, but there are production issues that aren't evident on the finished, album version. The whole album is excellent, by the way. But Epitaph is probably the strongest track. Love it.
My take on it is that its anti-war and anti-nuke specifically. One last thing is an epitaph isnt just a phrase that describes you, its the words written on your tombstone. Hes saying that as the warmongers profit off of human suffering, blindly following military advancement and ignoring the human cost, one day we'll just all be dead and nobody will know why
Great song. My cousin had it played at his funeral last year, but he made the decision back in the 70. But can somebody tell me what version this is. It's not the one as from the record. It's not the same feeling as on the original. The drums on this one is so boring, just playing like a machine. Back in the days we had this on a cassette tape and played it as we was watching stars, talking UFO and life in the Universe far out in the forest on a little hill. Much memories for me with this song.
In the late 60's the cold war had many of my generation expecting nuclear war soon. The instruments of death were ICBM nuclear missiles. In that context this song became a dystopian anthem. The title track from the album is just as good but without the doom and gloom.
Sadly this song it is still valid, the missiles are still there and now we have a retreat from science and environmental disaster on the horizon. With loose canons like Putin, Trump, Xi, Kim and Netanyahu in the world things may be worse than they were back when Pete Sinfield wrote those lyrics in the late 1960s.
Surprisingly, there were several Japanese covers of this song by artists who are normally known for pop songs. In my opinion, the original is still the best. Also, I believe the first album is at the pinnacle and eclipses all their successive efforts.
Greg Lake had such a distinctive voice. Epic Epitaph!!!
King Crimson! Great surprise to see a reaction of them. Loved listening to them in 1972 when I first came across them. I think they began in 1969. Greg Lake, on bass, went on later to be a founder of Emerson Lake and Palmer. His DNA is all over this song.

@@jwardbass4452 bruh there was lowkey no point in saying this no hate, just cracked me up that you said this
The strings that you heard were produced by a Mellotron. That was a keyboard instrument that produced orchestral sounds.
King Crimson was one of the very few groups to take it on the road as it was notoriously difficult to keep in tune.
A thousand years from now, music lovers will be talking about this song. Epic masterpiece is understatement
Saw them live in Long Beach, CA in 1972. I was 20 years old then, I am 71 now. Still love this music!
I hear Crimson and Atomic rooster ( group of Palmer) and the nice ( group of Enerson) before the legend trio band. ELP Is Born . . .my age Is 10 years old at that times.
I feel that Greg Lake had the finest voice in Rock Music…and he was a great writer, acoustic guitarist and bassist too.

Great! You really got the spirit of Epitaph by King Crimson right on the spot. Thank you very much - and keep up your good work.
Great response. Much better than most.
I don't think Peter Sinfield gets enough credit for those excellent, haunting lyrics.
Great job. The lyrics of this song take you down some wormholes and you gave some perspective to that. One of my all-time favorites.

This version is the original version's ghost. Original version (th-cam.com/video/vXrpFxHfppI/w-d-xo.html).
And the original is better, more ‘heady’ too. Longer fadeout with much more pronounced mellotron.
I like this version, but it lacks the overall power of the court of the crimson king version , which i find much more haunting.
