Glad you liked this one, Nick! Just to be clear, the "score" is a collection of classical music pieces that already existed, and the animation was created for the scores, which is why some of the stories don't make sense. This is the same situation in the first Fantasia. For a while, I taught a class that encouraged participants to imagine a story to go along with classical music in order to enjoy it more, and used Fantasia as a template. A lot of this music becomes more meaningful when you can picture something like this to go with it.

A number of people say that Fantasia 2000 isn’t as good as the first one but imo, I’d say that it’s just as good. My favorite segments of this one are “Rhapsody in Blue,” for its use of Al Hirschfeld inspired animation and “The Firebird Suite,” for its mythical characters and extraordinary art style. This film is one of my childhood favorites growing up in the 2000’s. Thanks for another great animation reaction, Nick!🙂

This will sound gimmicky but I didn't see this when it first came out but saw the VHS the following year on Christmas. Now, anyone who knows what happened in September of 2001 knows what was on most of our minds. It was VERY hard to ignore the final scene where everything is just destroyed and the dark musky atmosphere after the Firebird destroys the forest and leaves the Sprite broken and desheveled. It REALLY made me and the rest of my family watching think of New York after the attack. And so the power of watching the Sprite regain her hope and strength and renew the forest and restore the beauty of the environment (especially at 33:31) had a kind of power I can't even put into words. I'm tearing up now writing it because it basically said to us in the moment "this too shall pass"

I was a bit anxious seeing the tin soldier part. The original tale ends very cruel actually, with the soldier falling into the fire place and the ballerina jumping after him. Together they melt and die:(

one of the things that i love most about the original fantasia was just the handdrawn animation. you could see the animators really letting loose and pushing themselves to the limit conceptually. fantasia 2000 was created in kind of the last days of the studio's 2d animated features and i really like the handdrawn touches in combination with the cg. princess and the frog in 2009 was the last mainline 2d release. with fantasia 2000, i do think that some of the magic is lost in home viewing. when it was released, you could see it in imax theaters and that was a very intense experience.

Finally, I've been waiting for this one. The Firebird Suite was one of the most terrifying sequences in a movie I've seen in my life. I was traumatized when I saw it in the theater and couldn't muster up the courage till seven years later and now it's one of my favorite sequences. There's also a bit of emotional resonance to it in terms of how my late aunt had comfort me during that and I keep thinking that the sprite and her story are more in terms of what my aunt went through. The beginning represents her life up to when me and my siblings and cousins came in, the Firebird awakening, destroying everything representing her unfortunate battle with skin cancer and passing and then the end where the sprite has lost confidence but regains it as in her moving on and released from the pain she went through.

The worker wants to follow his passion to be a drummer, the girl wants to spend time with her parents, the man wants a job so he's no longer broke, and the husband wants to be free and do his own thing), the Tin Soldier, Donald's Ark, and the Nature one. The scene of the nature spirit inside the volcano and his eyes suddenly opening use to scare me. It was just so sudden, he was scary, and the music just popped without warning. Of course, the Scorcer's Apprentice is in it because it's a classic and one of the best. I love how we finally have a name for Mickey's master, Yen Sid (Disney backwards).

I’m not sure if they had been doing it already by this point, but some of the shorts might have a different style because it was intended for the Fantasia movies to become a testing ground for new animation of sorts. As I understand it, there was originally a third one in the making for a while, centered around world music. The Disney short films Lorenzo, The Little Matchgirl, and One By One were all intended to be a part of it at some point if I recall, but it never got finished. The Donald Duck and Daisy Duck segment is based on Noah’s Ark which is a bible story. Noah had to get two every animal because was going to flood the world of all its evil or something. For some reason Disney thought this fit with the Pomp & Circumstance music.
This Fantasia movie is significantly shorter than the original and it came in 1999 and ushered in the Post Renaissance/Experimental era of Disney animated movies up until 2008.

The original Fantasia was a huge experimental gamble for Disney, with the first major use of surround stereo sound ever recorded and ground-breaking (for its time) animation. That said, much of it doesn't play so well to modern audiences unless they are serious students of film or history buffs. Fantasia 2000 took the idea and made it much more palatable to current audiences including a shorter running time and the best recording techniques which make the music sound amazing. The Pines of Rome whale sequence happens to be my favorite, but everybody has their different sections that they love. I would say the Tin Soldier segment is my least favorite and it's still pretty darn good. The Sorcerer's Apprentice was generally considered to be the best sequence from the original 1940 film, which is why it was included as a repeat in this movie to follow Walt Disney's original idea to have Fantasia grow and develop with different segments being added or removed every few years. That idea never came to fruition, but the inclusion of the original Sorcerer's Apprentice was a bit of a nod to that concept.

The Firebird is genuinely one of the most transcendentally powerful works in Disney history. Spring is such a beautiful and expressive character, and the titular creature is up there with Chernobog in terms of sheer power and menace. And frankly, I would _throw_ myself into a volcano if it meant we could get Fantasia 2000 rep in Kingdom Hearts.

  • @mevb

The original concept for Fantasia was to update it with new segments with classical music and to have one or two returning in each update but when the movie originally flopped due to the limited showing due to the fact that it was a roadside attraction, not all theatres could install the Fantasound (they only had one speaker at the time, it would taken decades before stereo would become a standard) and lack of interest. It wasn't until the 90s when Fantasia sold well on VHS that a new Fantasia would be feasable. This is the reason why the Sorcerer's Apprentice was reprised. Originally a couple of others were consindered such as The Dance of the Hours.

While 2000 wasn't as popular as the original, it still holds a special place in my heart.
I love the different art styles for every segment. And some of the music has really stuck with me.
Rhapsody in Blue: I love how this chaotic piece is brought to life with the bustling city of New York with varied characters, all who you get to know. I've also played a shorter jazz band arrangement of this piece, which always makes me think of this segment.
Shostakovich's Piano Concerto no. 2, for the Steadfast Tin Soldier. Admittedly they did change the original fairytale quite a bit, but it's a piece of music I love. My father is a bassoonist and I've heard him play this before, that opening march like tune is just perfect for the tin soldiers.
And the finale being the Firebird suite, a piece I've played a little of myself (trombonist fyi). The design of the spring sprite is just fantastic too. The way colour is used in this one too is just to live, die and be reborn for.
It's such a shame there's no sign of Disney making another Fantasia. It would've been perfect what with the 100 years of Disney. It would be a risk, an opportunity to dip their toes back into 2D animation, maybe throw in some classic characters.
But no, Disney are too focused on squeezing money from live action remakes to dare make a piece of art like the Fantasia films again.

31:25 Firebird wasn’t in the previous one. Also I’m pretty sure that the spirit is either supposed to be Mother Nature or a Spirit of Spring. I usually depict her as Mother Nature. Also I love Firebird. It’s what got me into classical music.

So some fun facts about Fantasia 2000 and Fantasia in general:
    1) When Walt Disney originally made Fantasia, his original idea was that it would be an on-going show that constantly changed over time with every release (like how actual orchestral concerts usually play a combination of stuff they have and haven't played with every new concert). That is why, with Fantasia 2000, they just brought back the original "Sorcerer's Apprentice" sequence (yeah, admittedly nothing changed about it except technology allowed the music and animation to be heard and appear more clearly).
    2) Unfortunately, since the Fantasia films never did well enough in the theaters to be considered much of a success, finished sequences featuring music and animation for these changes had to be place in other projects or just appear as original shorts (for example, a sequence based on the song "Clair de Lune" was put into the Disney package film "Make Mine Music" during WWII while another sequence based on the Salvador Dali concept Bette Midler talked about before the Tin Soldier short would appear as it's own short called "Destino" which was released as a bonus feature on Fantasia 2000 DVDs).
    3) The animation design found in the "Rhapsody in Blue" sequence (the New York one) was also the same inspiration for the animation in "Aladdin." In fact, the man who designed and character animated the Genie, Eric Goldberg, is the same guy who gives James Earl Jones the paper that leads into the flamingo number and directed both the Rhapsody in Blue sequence as well as the Yo-Yo Flamingo sequence.
    4) While the final number was not in the first Fantasia, the composer behind the music was. Igor Stravinsky, who composed the Firebird Suite, was also responsible for the "Right of Spring" music which was used for the the 'short' featuring the dinosaurs in the first Fantasia.
    5) Fantasia 2000 was the first animated feature to be released in the IMAX format.
    6) As said in the film, "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" was a story originally made by Hans Christian Anderson. If that name sounds familiar, it's because he's also the author behind The Snow Queen (which is what Frozen was inspired from) and The Little Mermaid.

Original story of the Steadfast Tin Soldier is very sad(hell, Hans Christian Andersen stories are usually depressing when not changed by Disney. Original Little Mermaid kills herself after the man she saved fell for another woman and she gave up her voice to get legs). They ran out of tin when making the box of soldiers, so he was without a leg and falls for the ballerina doll, who he never speaks to or approaches. A goblin tells him to forget about pursuing her and through the goblins trickery, he is thrown out the window, ending up put in a paper boat by some boys and sent into the sewers before being swallowed by a fish. However, soon after being found again, the Soldier is thrown into the fire by the boy be belonged to(through control by the goblin or just cruelty by the boy). A gust of wind blows the Ballerina into the fireplace and they burn together, with a heart being found made out of tin and the Ballerinas spangle in the fireplace afterwards.
Favourite 3 were the Jazz one, Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Firebird. All amazing.
The other story of the Donald Duck one is tied to the biblical tale of Noah's Arc, where God sends a flood to kill the heathens and makes Noah build a great boat to carry two of every animal and Noah's family until the storm ends.

Rhapsody in Blue and the Firebird Suite are my favorites in this.
But I think what a lot of people are missing about the Firebird Suite, is that the volcano (the firebird) may be destructive, but it is just as part of nature as the sprite (or whatever it's called).
And here's a little factlet: the lands around volcanos are very fertile, which is why farmers like to grow an cultivate land around them, but it comes with the danger of possibly getting you s**t rocked by said volcano.

Saw this movie on January 13, 2000, in the IMAX theater in Sacramento, CA. I was in an orchestra group doing a tour of performances at elementary schools. I had been anticipating this movie at the time but didn't know we would see it. Music with words are songs. Music without words are pieces. When music is played with stage performers, without any of them singing, that is ballet. The part of the Nutcracker Suite from the first Fantasia and the Firebird Suite from this movie are both ballets. As a much younger individual in school, my class was treated to a performance of The Firebird as we were told the story beforehand. It's been many years, but I remember it being very well done.
PS: The music for the Firebird may sound familiar in certain terms as it was written by Igor Stravinsky. He wrote The Rites of Spring which was the dinosaur sequence in the original Fantasia from 1940.

I agree that the whale sequence of the film was boring; back when VHS was a thing, I would ALWAYS fast-forward that part because it was too long and I didn't enjoy it that much lol
I think I now consider Fantasia 2000 as one of my favorite films of all time because it showed me that music itself CAN tell a story and transform you (emotionally) and animation is indeed a work of art (I LOVE IT!!). Also the movie made me fall in love with the instrumental/classical music genre. :)

I'm pretty sure most of the songs in this are technically public domain, only one of them came out in 1957 making it still under copyright. Of course, Disney would own their own performances of the songs if they recorded them in house, but given that they don't own the songs in and of themselves, I don't know if TH-cam's algorithm is advanced enough to differentiate the Disney versions from the public domain originals. So I think the only thing you'd really have to worry about Disney blocking anything but the visuals. Everything 1927 and earlier, you shouldn't have to worry about copyright in America, but unfortunately I wouldn't be surprised if TH-cam was being paid off to conveniently get the memo, here shouldn't be a problem though because the music originated outside of Disney in the first place.

The original conception for Fantasia would that it would get a rerelease every few years, with a mix of new music and animation segments as well as select segments from the previous versions of the film. That's why the Sorcerer's Apprentice segment is the same in both; even though the original didn't do well enough at the box office to get the recurring movie treatment, they wanted to honor Walt's vision for the project.

Well, how did you like this one? I honestly wish Disney would do more movies like this, because there’s so much potential. My mom’s favorite piece from this movie is Rhapsody in Blue, because it’s one of her all time favorite pieces of music. Mine is the blockbuster fantasy of The Firebird Suite, which was definitely inspired by Mount Saint Helens (I’m convinced of that, anyway). Plus, the finale makes sense when you think about it: volcanic eruptions are devastating, but the soil becomes even more fertile, which is why the Spring Spirit was so much stronger in her power to grow new plants and trees.
And even though The Sorcerer’s Apprentice isn’t a new piece, it’s a definitive one, so it’s important for each generation to see it.

Great that you enjoyed this one more, you have also to consider the time gap from 1940 to 2000, therefore the sequel is more accessible to some I think, I love both, even though I admire the original a little bit more, but the sequel is shorter and better rewatchable. I love that they combined 2D and 3D animation in this, they use different art styles, what the first one didn't, that is really creative to show how even in style you can create so much different things. The only thing i dislike about the sequel is the reuse of sorcerer's apprentice, because they just use the exact same short from the original one and they could have just made a new great short, that seems pretty lazy to me. And the falmingo one is a little pointless for me. But otherwise also love the sequel and great you enjoyed it more :)
