We're not as excited as you BUT we're really excited for you two.

Thanks. I think more people may be interested when we get to the solar system set up. Solar is something boaters, boondockers and Doomsdayers can all agree is a cool tech to make life easier and more comfortable.

It'll be nice to pull your live-in trailer into the barn while interior of home is built. Very interesting watching the stages of construction. What is the R-Value of the walls? Will you have barn roof insulated? Is that rectangle between home and barn the mechanical room? Will you have a tankless water heater for home potable water? How will you separate water for floor heating from potable water (I assume floor heating water is on a closed loop)? Barn A/C or fans to ventilate, or both? Seems plenty of solar to run A/C! When cloudy days just turn barn A/C temp higher or turn-off. I am jealous!!! :¬) Webhead USA

Thanks. Yes, living in the trailer in the heated garage will be a good option while the inside of the house is a construction zone. I think the R value is 30? Maybe more? The radiant floor is in the garage (Barn), so the ceiling will be insulated the same as the house. I know that is A LOT of insulation but we want a heated shop/garage. Got to insulate it.

We own an ICF home, which we love, and I worked for a company that sold concrete. You do not fill the walls with cement, you fill them with concrete. Cement is an ingredient in concrete, along with sand, aggregate, water and occasionally color and fiberglass. Cement is to concrete as flour is to a cake mix. You don't bake a flour, you bake a cake. It's not a cement mixer, it's a concrete mixer. They are not Insulated Cement Forms, they are called Insulated Concrete Forms. Just thinking you might want to use the correct word since you're sharing your expertise with the world. Nice video and plan, though.

Ya. I just seem to call everything cement. Wasn't sure what the difference between concrete and cement. Now I do. Glad you like your ICF house.

I’m planning our ICF house for 2026 in South Dakota. Will be 2-story, full basement, and about 4,000’ of house, 900’ of garage.
How did they determine where they could safely fasten the 2x4 blocks to the slab for the kickers to mount? Is it thick enough where they were not worried about the PEX lines for the radiant heat?

Best of luck with your build. House sounds big! Not sure about your 2x4 question. Im the video guy and lend a hand but Im not a knowledgeable builder.

What's the R value of the ICF walls?

I believe it is R30. The benefits of ICF is more than just R value. It is good for sound proofing, fire resistance and being pretty much storm proof. I hear they are pretty much bullet proof if that matters. :-) Lot of benefits.
