Dunno, he makes mistakes. Though most people would not notice. If you really want to nerd Roman history, look for Mike Duncan's Roman history podcast, it is on TH-cam as well and the same level as a university course. But Jon is much more knowledgeable, enlightened and entertaining than just about any other gaming youtuber. Plus he is witty and snarky, and seems like a nice chap. One of my absolute favourite TH-camrs and my favourite gaming youtuber.
It's very cool when it happens - Jon Shafer was also very young when he became Lead Designer on Civ V - I can't find an exact date, but it was in his early 20s.
Martin Anward, who was the game director for Sterlaris, first got noticed by Paradox after a heavily modded Lets Play on the Something Awful forums that started in Crusader Kings and continued through Europa Universalis III, then Victoria, and into Hearts of Iron II, where he played a family through CK, and then heavily modded EU III to take into account the countries and histories of his CK game, and then did the same with Victoria from the EU III game, and then HOI II from the Victoria game. It was remarkable, and he totally deserved that job.
@@gerardmagos3608 I was slightly confused at first but then I just imagined that Jon built a road to an opposing army and used a one way road that actually lead to his capital and for some dumb reason his army won't use it (cause that's illegal) but the other army just waltz right up and burns it to the ground.
Please do series of this, or even a mini series, or even a livestream, please just play more. İ immediately added this to my wishlist, it's a great game.
17:26 The petty frail guy, Petty; likely to engage in a "mild" feud within a few years if another clan is on the same tile. // Frail; never engages in feuds with other clans.
Yeah, it would take awhile, but, if you count all the fallout 4 playthroughs as one, that amounts to at least a year. But he probably won't, though I think he'd love it.
I mean, the Skyrim playthrough lasted 114 parts, which (if Im not mistaken) is the current longest standing series on the channel. Im sure if he's interested in it, he'd play it through to the end.
Another game that might be worth a look is Call to Power 2, a civilization clone. It's an older game (2000) but I liked it better than Civ 3, it's contemporary. Available on GOG. In one game I managed to rack up a body count of around 300,000,000 using nanite environmental bombs during the end game. :-/
Hey Jon, didnt now where else to send you this, but you really check out the new Sim Settlements Conquerer mod for F4. Maybe its even worth a playthrough for you on youtube, which would make my day. cheers.
Don't know if the guy with your name has any Dutch connections, but Stijn is more pronounced like 'Stine'. The 'ij' is a contracted vowel, not pronounced as two separate letters.
Name ... As am I, it was a simple joke, and one that he has joked about in the past with the porn shop bit. Enunciation exists in every country, not all english people speak exactly the same. Don’t get upset at people who are trying to take the piss
Ugh, what kind of work, job, or personal trait gives you/requires the "brown-thumb"?! Is it the guy that would use his hands to soften the kings' seat before we had seat cushions? Because if so, I believe he's doing it wrong...unless the king is a deviant, I suppose. Or a blow-up doll.
Hmmm, so I like Civ5 (although I waited until it was on sale as a bundle). At the Gates seems more than OK, a strategic Kings of Dragon Pass in real life history. So I go see his website. That pic. I want to believe. But he looks so carnivorous. OK I'll buy this one, but if I'm funding the next EA boss I will spank you. He doesn't look like a saviour but he is walking the walk again (Civ 5 was evil on the wallet if you bought in early).
I sense Jon’s Roman History lessons.... I’m sold.
Not nearly as good as Jon's American History lessons, but I'll take it.
yeeeees! I'm very much looking forward to imperator rome for this exact reason :D

Only can second the recommendation for "History of Rome" one of my all time favourite pieces of media
It's surprising how often players become lead designers. The head of the top guild on my server in Everquest became the lead quest designer on WoW.
It's very cool when it happens - Jon Shafer was also very young when he became Lead Designer on Civ V - I can't find an exact date, but it was in his early 20s.
Goals man.

@@epicurius1 I would love to watch that honestly.
@@epicurius1 Do you by any chance remember what he was playing as?
Jon, one word. More.
I forget that Jon has some kind of degree in history. His lectures are my favorite part of these games
I have no idea who this Jon Shafer is, but he is At The Gates, so I may as well let him in.
Wait... Jon... are you Jon?
I wish I was talented enough to have been lead designer on Civ V in my early 20s.
Jon playing a game made by a Jon.
Shut up and take my TH-cam Red money.
I read the title as “Jon is at the gates” “the fall of civilization” and I was just like goddammit Jon. What did you DO!?!
build roads probably
@@gerardmagos3608 I was slightly confused at first but then I just imagined that Jon built a road to an opposing army and used a one way road that actually lead to his capital and for some dumb reason his army won't use it (cause that's illegal) but the other army just waltz right up and burns it to the ground.
23:38 a field of Wheat-In-Waiting? The Wheat loves us, and we must love the Wheat.
Its just wheating on the world to change
Jon Shafer’s at the gates. HE WANTS IN
I hope you keep playing this, you have the best walkthrough of it so far.
Please make this a series!
What an amazing game! I just MUST buy it! Jon, you have become my gaming recommendation-related guru! :D
I absolutely love the graphics of this. Like significantly more than I thought I would at first glance.
Please Give Us More Of This Jon!
The artstyle alone has sold me on this.
Now I want to dig out my Asterix books, original print versions from the 70s, handed down from my brother.
I love Asterix.
"Oh the winter is going to be wet? So there won't be much snow, but it will rain." I take it Jon has never lived somewhere cold.
Will this be on the history test?
Yes now tell me who led the mughal empire during its collapse.(truthly I dont know so your grade will be A no matter the answer.)
Good 'ol Minsc and his giant miniature space hamster!
I wouldn't have expected this game to be released, to be honest.
Make this shit a fuckin series Jon. It's so fun to watch.
I would enjoy seeing more of this.
this would be great game for livestream :D
Can you please make this a series
Spot on.
Please do series of this, or even a mini series, or even a livestream, please just play more. İ immediately added this to my wishlist, it's a great game.
I hope the band “At the gates” is on the soundtrack
17:26 The petty frail guy, Petty; likely to engage in a "mild" feud within a few years if another clan is on the same tile. // Frail; never engages in feuds with other clans.
Don't know if a "mild" feud is different from a feud though
Series! Series! Series!
please play more of this I this game is great!
I wasn't sold on this for a bit, but the mechanics look very interesting and different enough. This would be a great playthrough.
Love Jon's History lessons :)
I’d like to see a full series of this!
My vote goes towards adding this to the "possible livestream" list.
I saw the title and assumed the apostrophe was to mean “Jon Schaffer is at the gates”.
I was intrigued
Livestream! Because I enjoy your historical lectures XD
Hey Jon, you should check out Pathfinder Kingmaker. It's a brilliant game.
don't think he'd do it as its very long
I dunno, he has done a lot of replays of the same game, so what if instead he just played a long one? I think he should still do it.
don't get me wrong wish he would, just never saw him do a long play through and that would take months to finish on a youtube schedule.
Yeah, it would take awhile, but, if you count all the fallout 4 playthroughs as one, that amounts to at least a year. But he probably won't, though I think he'd love it.

I Was About To Add This Game To My Wishlist On Steam, But I Accidentally Clicked The "Explore" Button, And It Was The First Recommended Game...
Oh nice a northgard style game. And a free History lesson. Awesome.
More of this please 😍😍
When will be the next episode? Really like your playthrough pls continue.
in Stijn the ij is pronounced similarly to the I in Ireland, Jon.
other people: stein
jon, an intellectual: stigeon
Loved the video can you play more
The character-graphics in this game reminds me so much of King of Dragon Pass.
Anyone else notice that he gave the meek clan the earth job? I found that coincidentally hilarious.
I always read your name as MARY A True Nerd and my brain gets a jar every time when it hears a names voice LUL
This game has me blinded by fear
...of hell, as we make our way to heaven...
Anubis through the nazi lines...
Through the natzee lines!
「MADE IN HEAVEN」!
Primo Victoria!
Unexpected sabaton
More please
Will you be playing civ 6 gathering storm as a series or a livestream or something
Jon Shafer made a new game and I don't know about it?! I must atone for this transgression.
this'll be a live stream soon
I also like the fact that there's a Goth named Warren.
More please.
This art style reminds me of The Great Whale Road.
RIP Great Whale Road.
Oh yeah yeah
oh yeah yeah
I feel like this needs a full play through.
Hrodic: Likely to engage in petty feuds BUT is too frail to actually start feuds. So he basically just glares at people?
He just leaves passive-aggressive sticky notes on the other guys' toolboxes.

Yes pls

This so unreal. I do not believe Goths would give up food just because Saxons said so.
Pretty ballsy to release this so close to the release of Imperator Rome
L L i hope that imperator comes out in March
Moar!
But here is the real questions about those Goths, are they more Siouxie or more Sisters of Mercy? ;)
Punching your friend in the face is just what happens in anime.
that never happens to me. maybe i should work on more complex mods that recolouring stuff in paint XP
Reminds me a lot more of Colonization (the original one,), than Civilisation. In any case, added to STEAM wishlist!
It's rough being a stigeon...
Oh yeah yeah.
I really struggle not to laugh at " field of wheat"
You really- REALLY want to try Europa Barbarorum 2. Most accurate TW simulation of Antiquity.
"ij" can be pronounced the same as "ei" as in einstein. in dutch we call ij the long y and ei the short y.
This game doesn't think being a craftsman involves the hands? How do they craft...?
Is this the game that finally teaches Jon to read all the tooltips?
You can't teach an old Jon new tricks
am i imagining thing or is this a reference to asterix and obelix
Can you play EU4??
PLZ MAKE A SERIE out of it
*series
Don't know if the guy with your name has any Dutch connections, but Stijn is more pronounced like 'Stine'. The 'ij' is a contracted vowel, not pronounced as two separate letters.
Pawn shop becomes Porn shop
Lorekeeper becomes law keeper
Jon, you need to invest more points into perception *and* speech.
He's English. Not everyone pronounces things the same way as you
Name ... As am I, it was a simple joke, and one that he has joked about in the past with the porn shop bit. Enunciation exists in every country, not all english people speak exactly the same. Don’t get upset at people who are trying to take the piss
As A Belgian, the way you pronounce the name "Stijn" is so funny XD it's basicly pronounced as "Stain" not "Stigin" XD
Endless livestream! Think of all the history lessons & the horrific pronunciations! It'll be glorious!
Hope there isn’t a pop quiz after this...
Jon? Play a Civilization-styled game about *Rome?* Who would have thought...
Livestream yesplease!
this reminds me in some ways of Pharaoh and CIVCITY: ROME
I love civilisation ever since I played the 1st one.
I dont get this game 😇 I NEED to see a full playthrough (maybe a new series)
A shame the game never got properly completed. Apparantly there is a user made mod that improves some things though.
Jon you might want to look at Kingdom come deliverance
Barbarian Invasion..reminds me of a war game..not sure which
I actually don't think I get the point for once! Haha it's kind of complicated and I can't spend time reading the tool tips XD
I thought u said jon safari :(
its hanibel at the Gates. it the first time i heard barbarins At the Gates
Um, more please
Ugh, what kind of work, job, or personal trait gives you/requires the "brown-thumb"?!
Is it the guy that would use his hands to soften the kings' seat before we had seat cushions? Because if so, I believe he's doing it wrong...unless the king is a deviant, I suppose. Or a blow-up doll.
Can Ubisoft research some Honor so they stop selling micro DLCs for their full price games?
Hmmm, so I like Civ5 (although I waited until it was on sale as a bundle). At the Gates seems more than OK, a strategic Kings of Dragon Pass in real life history. So I go see his website. That pic. I want to believe. But he looks so carnivorous. OK I'll buy this one, but if I'm funding the next EA boss I will spank you. He doesn't look like a saviour but he is walking the walk again (Civ 5 was evil on the wallet if you bought in early).
Visi and Ostra for teh goths is a arbitrary historian split. It just means east and west goth.
Do a Total war rome 2!
Excuse me as I jus- OH YEAH YEAH
GOTHS first wave of norsemen
Jon (our Jon) must have been a Goth in his school days to have such astute knowledge XD
