Thank you for the kind words and I do hope this helps you with your shorthand shape language. The key to reduction is squinting at the reference while painting or drawing with the eyes in focus. You are looking in the articulation for the shapes you saw in the blur when you referenced the subject. If the eyes can remain out of focus, blurry eyes, when viewing the subject, all the business will be reduced to those big shapes, which, when we are ready for them, will see the big forms within the big shapes. Now this is what we build upon. Once the big forms are in, open the focus of the eyes a little to see the next level of shapes, apply them, open focus more, apply what you see, etc until you have the level of noise, or small shape language that you want in the image. I hope that made some sense.
@renegadefade7501, gouache is really flexible, and can always be washed away if it's really not going well. I hear ya on having something nearby that can help turn down the sound inside the headspace, a part of the beauty of getting lost in the painting. Good luck with your work and thank you for writing.
Hopefully we get more videos, love your work and the way you teach! Been watching and learning since those Gnomon videos.
Thank you @DevinC, I plan on making more videos when I can get the time for them, and thank you for watching, I really appreciate it.
This is great, I especially loved seeing you simplify nature, as trees and other details are so overwhelming to me.

Thank you for this.. I've been enjoying gouache. A video like this helps me get out of my own head. Studies like these really help.
