The Zep member that went home to his family after the gigs, that stood still behind his bass and keyboards, that provided the glue that held Zep songs together, so that they didn't just become 2-dimensional rock songs. Before Zep, he was a string and keyboard arranger for dozens of psychedelic rock hits like Rolling Stones' "She's a Rainbow," "Two Thousand Light Years From Home," and for hits by Donovan, Herman's Hermits, and others.
Then he got that phone call from Jimmy Page.
After "All That" ended in 1980, he went on to arrange and produce for dozens of artists from many genres of music, such as R.E.M., Heart, Jars of Clay, Ben E. King, Peter Gabriel, Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, as well as recording as a member of supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, which included Dave Ghrol and Josh Homme. He's also produced several albums of solo work.
Thus, the Zep member who went home to his family after those legendary 70s concerts - remained the most active member of the band, post-breakup.

John Paul Jones. After watching this, I have gained so much respect for this man. I already respected him as a member of led Zeppelin, but I respect him even more because of his super cool, down-to-earth attitude. Jones and Bonham were truly the backbone of Led Zeppelin, as any bassist and drummer should be. If you listen closely to The Rain Song, you can hear all of John's intricate piano/bass lines. He is truly a beautiful soul... And he kicked ass in one of the most awesome bands ever!

That is a key factor of why ZEP was so successful because none of the members tried to out do eachother, rather they worked in sync with eachother!..❤❤

As a teen, I loved Page and Plant, and then Bohnam was also sooo present...I even owned a double neck SG so I could pretend I was Page in front of the mirror LOL. Only later did the musical contribution of JPJ dawn upon me - how awesome and integral he was. Following that, I read some stories (possible hearsay) about how he was really keeping the group together when they were over the top with alcohol and getting high. He was truly the rock. Also - neat story, I taught guitar at the Swannanoa Gathering in NC and heard that he was there for mandolin week - incognito. He told no one who he was, took classes and they all figured it out afterwards. That's humility.

JPJ is an absolute legend... From Bass Guitar to Mellotron , to Mandolin, Guitar, and back up vocals and harmonies, he put the Zeppelin in Led Zeppelin, allowing them to soar to all sorts of epic heights! He has the Midas Touch with all instruments he plays, and with Led Zeppelin, he helped to revolutionize rock music forever and cast a massive shadow on the genre and a multitude of its subgenres.

Thank you, I couldn't have put it any better. No JPJ, no Led Zeppelin. Page, Plant, Bonham and even Peter Grant overshadowed JPJ but we're fortunate to witness now what an indispensable member of the band he truly was, just an incredibly versatile talent. Page knew what he was doing when he took JPJ into the band. JPJ's true talent within Zeppelin didn't quite come to the fore until IN THOUGH THE OUT DOOR when his experimentation was leading the band into am expanded 80's rock genre that sadly never saw fruition. And the one thing that I never understood is why he never played any guitar within Zeppelin save for "Ten Years Gone" live onstage (with bass foot pedals, no less). I wish that JPJ could live forever and it was also unfortunate that he was excluded for the Page/Plant UNLEDDED project in the 90's which he didn't take lightly.

One of my jobs is a studio musician in south Florida, ( guitar, piano). I owe it all to Zeppelin. I liked other bands but there was something about Zeppelin that I had to play their music! They played every style, so you had to learn everything.
I feel the same way about them that you do.
