I'm looking forward to performing this song (piano) with Will Ackerman at the Basement in Sydney on 21st NOvember - if I can play something half as good as Michael Hedges I'll be happy. Will and Michael both have more musical ability in their little finger than most musicians could dream ot - its about heart...................and soul, and putting the notes out there to the universe. Its about FEELING the music.

Hope your performance was a success. All we can do is be prepared, be respectful and be in the moment.

13 years since I discovered this enternal masterpiece. Michael Hedges is still unmatched. (0:50 - start of the tune)

Almost once in a month I discover a new masterpiece of Hedges for me and everytime I become even more convinced of Hedges' exceptional talent.
"Guitarist from another planet" - indeed. Quite sad to realize we will never be able to listen to him live.

Saw him several times. Each time, he came out to talk with those of us who stuck around to ask questions, Guitar in hand, willing to answer anything we had to ask. Influenced me more than any other guitarist.

I can't wait until the "this musician is so underrated" trend to fizzle out. It's been done to death many times over. He's not underrated, he was/is highly regarded for his musicanship and is well known.

Ackerman always is with me on my hiking and kayaking trips. This is one of my favorites when it comes around on my playlist. Make me think of the wildness of the outdoors, even in northern NJ.

Absolutely. Fretboard gymnastics are fun to watch, but ultimately it's the emotion invoked that matters. Scales of sixteenth notes don't impress me as much as the goosebumps I get from a piece like this.

I am really stoked. I am playing this song with Will Ackerman himself, as a piano/guitar duo at my CD Release Concert on Sept 12!
We are doing the Will Ackerman/George Winston version. I can't wait! I will post a video response of us playing it on the 14th after I get back from the gig.
This is an amazing version. Bless Michael's heart....miss him. I know Will does very much.
So...we'll play on and remember the giants, the visionaries and the music. I know I will.

TheCatsandsteve please find a way to copy that onto a hardrive and put it together and load it up on TH-cam. plz, it's people like you who make all this possible. I personally learned of Michael, and many other great musicians, purely through TH-cam. help keep the memory alive.

Yes, PLEASE digitize this! I recorded it in 1989, but wore the tape out 30 years ago. I've been looking for it since then. A couple of years ago, I was able to confirm that Maryland Public Television has the tape, but there are no plans or funds to digitize it citing the very old format of the videotape and music rights. :(

I once had an Evening with Windham hill on laser disc. When the equipment wore out, I never replaced it because it was obsolete. Please digitize and post. That was an amazing performance from all, but in particular by Michael.

There could be many copies of this show available but are in the hands of television companies, like PBS, which broadcast this back in '86. I recorded it to VHS too but over the years, though it has been lost, sadly. I hope it does make its way to being digitally restored and available to the public. I don't really know why sometimes it takes so long to make more available, truly great musical performances like this one.

What I noticed now after 13+ years I first learnt about Michael, is how his guitar is fluent in his hands. I mean literally, when he holds it, it behaves like a literal continuation of his body and other movements. Like it's not some instrument separate from him, but part of him. There are lots of other guitar players who play fluently, but I don't see what I see here.

They'll never be another period quite like the early Windham Hill days. Ackerman and Hedges, among others, wrote the book on acoustic new age (for lack of a more definitive term). The music is timeless.

Not really man, people that know the acoustic guitar know he was one of the founding fathers of this complex new age finger picking style that paved the way for some of these great guitarist like Andy Mckee and Antoine Dufour.

Pyro-techniquals (pardon the attempted pun) are not prerequisites to beautiful music, as the pairing of Hedges, may he RIP, and Ackerman so melliflously demonstrate. Ackerman wrote some beautiful melodies, no matter how 'dumbed-down' some people claim them to be.

It gave him a fantastic visual presence on the stage, and I do recall that his stage magic had the eyes of many men and women in the audience looking upon him adoringly, lovingly, and lustily. His power, energy, confidence, and dynamism was written all over him. He aspired to a state of being "torched," and compared to most of us, he was like a flaming diamond.

Hedges is otherworldly, but really, Ackerman is about the most mediocre guitarist I've ever heard.

    • @9ner
      @9ner 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Ackerman? Mediocre? He's not the best of all time but his compositions are very moving and beautiful and capture emotions I've never seen a guitarist do. Listen to what he says in his short video on returning.
