Tyler Williams is a great example of ffs meets traditional fishing, he’s having success throwing jigs with ffs in almost every scenario on 22 pound test. This last elite tournament he was scoping using chatter baits swim and football jigs and his hookset is a thing of beauty

Great observation! Yeah he is a very rounded angler and it is nice to also see anglers like him and Scott Martin use traditional baits on FFS. Me and a buddy won a few local derbies doing similar techniques in 8ft or less & heavy line over the last two years. We thought we were never gonna master the 1/4oz strolling method in tournaments so why not just use it to our own advantage. It’s probably 2x the learning curve now that I’m more efficient with deep water minnow fishing techniques but this is what adapting looks like.

I am basically a weekend warrior angler. I’m not on the water day in and day out to have the opportunity to waypoint a lot of “hot spots.” So, even on a lake that I have fished some I graph. I enjoy grafting because not only do I locate fish but I learn more about the lake. Finding a few groups of fish and bait while graphing helps me to know what predominant depth the fish are, what structure and cover they are relating to and all of that plus a few other things I learn helps me to formulate a pattern. I am old school, I don’t fish tournaments so I am not going to purchase thousands of dollars worth of electronics. I believe that relying on ff will over time will diminish an anglers fishing skills. Tournaments are being won based on ff and not on fishing skills. I used to watch fishing tournaments but no longer do so. I am not going ti watch an angler watching a screen all day. For me I like the sense of adventure and mystery when I fish.

The discussion around the 51 minute mark is the best and where I can relate the most. In today's society people want instant gratification through minimal work. That is what livescope gives them. You used to need knowledge and skills to be a consistently good angler. It was a legitimate skill to understand when and how fish would use a piece of structure. Interpret your sonar to understand the structure layout, and position your boat on it. Pick the perfect cast angles. Feel your bait moving in the water. Feel that light bite from a lethargic fish. Now someone can use a livescope to do pretty much all that.

I agree with Johnny, hunting for the fish starting with studying maps and putting in the hrs. then once you find them it shows the work paid off. that being said, I own a live scope and have spent hrs staring at the screen. simply not as fun to me but I'm not feeding my family fishing tournaments. but I have seen that the guys I know who couldn't catch a limit of crappie to save their life, now have a weekend guide service. So the end result is it will have a negative effect of fish populations.

Johnny, you have to be 1 of the most SOLID PEOPLE IN FISHING ON THE INTERNET. Not TH-cam. THE INTERNET. You've shown the world you can fish. You've shown the world you share information. You've shown the world you have a passion to teach people what you know. You've shown the world you do what you teach and it works. Switch because "JOHNNY" wants to switch not due to pressure. I wanted to say that I LOVE your content and have taught me so much. I religiously watched your videos before I bought my first boat in 2022, and I watch even more so now.
I personally feel like the "old" school videos are still so precious to the general public. because the general public is not tournament fishing. because for most people, maybe just me, if I spent 8 hours on the water and only caught 5 fish. That's a pretty terrible day, regardless of the size. So the skill to be able to find and scan the high percentage areas. finding the schools is still very important to me, and I will continue to do it.
Just to be clear, I dont largemouth fish at all. they are 100% by catch. I fish crappie, walleye, hybrids and white bass. so I will use your content to help me.
The way I used your content is to learn how to read contour maps, learn to scan, mark, then come back with my FFS and see if there's fish. if there isn't, move on. because my goal is to get on top of fish so that my family or myself start catching. i'm not like josh jones head hunting 1 fish. I just want to set that hook, hear that drag sing. if a big one comes in, huge bonus.
On the topic of big fish, the way I approach it is that if I want big fish ... I fish big fish waters. not head hunt for big fish because again, I'm not fishing for 5 fish.
I love my LVS34 setup and do not ever want to get rid of it. because it has brought so much happiness to my kids, my father, and brothers. With that being said, no one will want to fish with me if I put my ultrex on 10 and scan the face of the dam/cove/ditch/drain for 1 fish.
So in my opinion, dont forget about the regular people who just want to go out and have fun. please keep the content you have done. but I believe that this presents a new avenue for you and do a "tournament tactics'' variant of the same lake. I would still watch it because there is always something for me to learn. but your average person videos are WAAAAAAY more important to me.\

Of course livescope is making champions out of newbies. That's demonstrably true. KVD retired because he can no longer compete with the scopers like Dustin Connell. Greg Hackney, Rick Clunn, KVD, even Chris Zaldain are all being pushed out because all these kids are scoping. Do you really think that there'd be all these 20 year old kids dominating those guys with hundreds of years of combined experience and knowledge if they didn't have livescope? Of course not.

KVD retiring cause FFS is totally false. You mean the 20 year olds that have fished 200 boat high school tourneys since they were 14? Yeah they have plenty of experience and drive to compete. Old guys get complacent, lose drive, and whine in instagram they can’t go catch 12 pounds on bank and cash a check anymore… cry me a river

    • @johndavis5662
      @johndavis5662 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

According to Zaldain, many of the top pros are now sporting up to $50,000 in electronics on their boats, with an average of $25 to $30k. Of course we have $100,000+ bass'n rigs too. Electronics in general and even the spinning reel were objected to when they first were introduced. FFS isn't going away, but where does it stop and how is it affecting the sport? Maybe they ought to categorize tournaments so that you have to fish some with no electronics, limited electronics, full electronics to qualify for the elite series and angler of the year.

I agree with your guys thoughts. I feel the same. I added the lvs34 system, 10" Garmin, & steady cast heading sensor to my PA12-360 kayak a year ago. I've only used forward mode about 25% of the time & when I've been fishing deeper water. 75% of time I'm fishing shallower water & I keep my perspective facing forward & used it to find cover. I can't stare at a screen the whole time I'm out on water. But I have used it alot. I have taken time to learn it.

Good haircut Johnnie! I think you're going through the same dilemma as the older pros. You got good doing it your way with what was the latest tech, but now it's moved on, so the strategies have changed. I think you can do both in the future. There's a place for your previous method and the new method for your videos, but I think more and more people are getting scopes so you can teach that without guilt. Side imaging was out of people's price range for a long time too, but now it's fairly ubiquitous with people who are semi serious about fishing.

  • @umi415
    @umi415 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

1:02:15 just use all the technologies! You can graph with side and down, then use ffs. This way you are teaching for all types of anglers. I watched many ffs videos before purchasing it, so who says other fishermen that don't have it yet are not interested. I mean of course the ones who are against it, probably won't care for the content. But the again your expertise is offshore and tech so... keep up the content Jonny, like I told you a few videos back. Cater to your base! Great video man BTW.

I have been watching and enjoying your videos a long time. The Live Scope dilemma is real and not going away anytime soon. Water and people seek their own level so there's not much middle ground. You are the best at teaching electronics and if you wish to please everyone it will take two channels. One channel to get the best out of all electronics available and one channel with electronic limitations.

  • @AlTipton

    Hey Jonny…
I have watched all your videos and have learned so much from you from pitching in your back yard and how to graph and locate fish…
I fully support whatever decision you make on FFS. Will not stop me from watching the great videos you send out.
    My only issue is this…
I can no longer be competitive with FFS anglers and would love to have FFS but being an older person on a fixed income it’s hard for me to go out and drop 3-4 thousand dollars on FFS…
Will still be doing the things I’ve learned from you with what I have and hope for the best…Thanks and keep up the good work…

No doubt this will have a major impact on crappie populations. Guys I know who had a good day now and again can limit out everytime in just a few hours and they aren’t even targeting brush - just open water scanning and picking off 2-3 out of groups of open water roaming fish. These giants were only really touched in the past by people who were were trolling diving baits at various depths would come up with a half dozen of them each time out. Now everybody’s live well are limits of the giants.

Hello I am korean. FSS has already spread like a trend in Korea. Because of FSS, I have gained many new patterns and experiences. No matter how up-to-date the equipment is, it can be used differently depending on the individual's skills. Of course, it is true that it is quite burdensome in terms of cost. But I don't think I can go fishing because I don't have FSS.

As a person who has been blessed with common sense my whole life . FFS will have a negative effect for offshore and shallow fish . Johnny admitted that even the shallow fish aren't immune to it's overwhelming ability to put pressure on these fish . Look at it this way . I secure my deer rifle to a drone and sit in my truck on the side of the road and go hunting . Now thats efficient . Fishing is a battle between man and fish . Not technology and fish .

I'm not scared of it. For you, catching the bass is the most important part. For me, it's the figuring them out. I'm the same way with turkey hunting. I could care less if I call a bird in, wether I shoot it, or someone else. It's the figuring out what made that bird come in. It's the hunt. Sure I still like catching fish, but I'd rather catch 5, after figuring them out, than pull up on a spot, and they are schooled up and just reel them in. I mean, that's fun, but it's not the hunt.

In my experience, "efficiency" and "fun" usually do not go together. How did we turn fishing into something that's not fun? That's really a travesty. Do the fishing you enjoy and hopefully your enjoyment will show through to your audience.
Now if you have to make money, then that's a separate conversation. Also in my experience, "making money" and "fun" rarely go together.

I hear a lot of people say something similar to what you said about " keep up with technology or you'll be left behind." But do you not think there has to be a limit at some point eventually? Ffs is "my line in the sand" for technology and fishing. It’s too big of a game changer for me. The whole searching for and watching fish live, etc. ventures into a virtual reality video game territory for me. Regardless that ffs is a skill to learn. Do you have an example of what would be your line too far?

In 1946, I caught bass in basically a drainage ditch pouring into Saginaw bay. Cheap bamboo rod, silk fly line, balsa popping frog, sitting on dad's shoulders. 4 pounders. No tech required. My answer to Randy, Roll up to the launch. You each get an adze and a log along with two sticks that will make paddles. A willow stick and a piece of meat lacing string and a safety pin. Go.
A local guide uses FFS to find fish and then spot locks and sends down an Aqua View to identify the fish.

I dont fish tournaments anymore, but everyday im into watching it, learning others ideas etc....im ate up with bass fishing, 54 reels lowest quality is curado, easily have 1000 crankbaits ( square bills, deep, shallow, lipless etc). And practically every lure catagory, bagillion plastics..... And $200 plus core tackle.....i say this as attempt to prove my seriousness. Ffs is for lazy people, or people with no dedicated time, the whole point of fishing is the unknown and mystery and joy of figuring it out. I think subconciously people that like it feel there is ton of bass, so that is why its not same as spot lighting deer, or drone and thermo image hunting deer .

I think sometimes they vaporize! I’d like to hear a discussion on how to locate them on these days. Sometimes I just can’t locate them. I feel they stick to the bottom so tight, unless I see them move you pass over them. What about the “type” of day they are out suspended. I enjoy my FFS on my 13.5 OldTown. Many of us do not have 8-10 hours 7 days a week to be on the water. I do not fish tournaments, but I do enjoy the benefits it provides. Being in a kayak, I can only map so much as I do not have the mobility to jump all over the lake. In saying all of that, I normally do not use it to find fish, I drop it down on either previously set waypoints,, or if I troll over a hump or drop off and see fish on sonar. I will say it has made watching BASS Live a bit boring. To save that, they need to split screen with a camera always on what the Angler is seeing. Problem seems to be these guys are literally dropping FFS and just trolling around, or it at least appears that way on camera. I understand both sides of the argument. However from a weekend anglers standpoint, it make fishing much more enjoyable by eliminating dead water. They may be able to ban FFS in local tournaments, but there is too much $$$ between the companies and BASS in just advertisement to think it would ever be banned at the top. A majority Angler strike, might cause a hiccup, but will never happen as they will not hit their own wallets via an attack on their sponsors.

I wonder how hunting would change if hunters could use drones and infrared cameras to locate game? To me, FFS seems to do much the same thing. Not sure I like that.

Here in south Louisiana 20’ is deep, FFS is being used widely, fishing 2 to 4’ deep waters is common. FFS is the only electronic that actually works in that shallow of water. I’ve noticed when using FFS more then not the fish lockup like a deer in the headlights. It seems they sense the beam , to the point some will run from your boat. These fish are 40’ plus out from my boat. What I’ve resorted to is looking with FFS, turning it off going back and fish those areas, same way you would do with side scan in the past.

Down the road the FFS will improve to the point where it tells you the species of fish and the approximate weight and possibly the best technique and bait likely to catch that fish cause you will have programmed the unit with lake and weather conditions before you left the dock. Is that the direction we want fishing to go. Many won’t be able to compete due to the cost of units. So do the people with more money deserve all the titles?

FFS is allowing giant pelagic roaming fish to be targeted and followed sometimes until caught. There is no difference than if I chose to hunt from camp with a thermal imaging drone. The fishermen can tell what species and size before they decide to even make a cast and then they can follow and harass the fish until it bites. I’m watching some of them practice and say oh there’s a drum and then they catch it and it’s a drum, or a catfish etc. And even the best ones can tell within a few pounds how big the fish is and whether it’s even worth making a cast to. It’s an unbelievable tool and you can learn so much from their behavior and reaction to a lure and that’s cool. But let’s face it,
The pros should be able to use it for practice to locate fish and areas but it should really be turned off during the tournaments.

    FFS saves you gas.
At the cost of needing a boat full of lithiums. haha
I love FFS because I'm a fairly casual fisherman. I don't always have days to practice before a tournament or maybe I only have a few hours after work. I like catching fishing more than 'fishing'. That may not be the case for everyone and I get that. But the tug is the drug. I want to catch more fish and FFS let's me do that.

Might not be a popular opinion, but I'm kind of for the extreme of either end regarding tournaments. I say you either allow ALL sonar technology, or no sonar technology per individual tournament. I think there's a place for organizing tournaments for people that want to go straight old-school intuition, and tournaments using the latest and greatest gadgets.
I think this "one or the other" mentality is unnecessary. If the tournaments without sonar get more views, maybe those tournaments will start to carry more money and sponsors for pro fishing and we'll see less screen watching.
I don't see any legit reason to regulate the technology for recreational fishing, daily and bag limits regulate the impact on the fishery by themselves. Assuming proper catch and release is practiced, catching more fish doesn't impact the populations, keeping fish does...

I don't understand all this dialogue sort of whining about FFS. Why didn't the same complaining occur about high tech mapping, down mega imaging, mega side imaging, high tech GPS capabilities and spot lock, mega 360, and high-tech electric trolling motors and raptors? When I started casting for bass 65 years ago there were no electric motors, no electronic depth finders and the only backlash control we had on our bait caster was our thumb. I've witnessed all these technological advances, and I don't see anything to complain about. If a fisherman doesn't like any of these advancements, then don't use them and quit whining. As far as what goes on at or during tournament fishing, who cares? I could care less what tournaments do nor do I care if they completely go away. Fishermen need to quit wasting time complaining about technological advancements and use that wasted time to go fishing.

I completely agree with u and I was fixing to post basically the same thing. I really think FFS was the straw that broke the camel back. I’m retired now, I wasn’t able to get on the lake much for years because of my job and my kids growing up. I started using the high tech maps to become more familiar with the lakes I fish. Look at the group of people upset with FFS and I would bet most of them were fishing before all the technology was available.

It's the fact that if you tournament fish, and don't use FFS, you don't have a chance. The guys that are good with it, are beating the best fishermen in the world. So, are these guys just that good, or are they good at FFS, and it gives them that much of an edge? I quit tournament fishing, so it doesn't bother me as much. But the fish seem to be harder to catch. They seem spooky more. Just my experience.

  • @ericfehr8632

It all boils down to if it is sporting to the fish, and if it hurts the fisheries.
If not keep it! If it hurts the fisheries, then it should be banned.
Professional tournaments should regulate it due to it removing much of the skill.
Why dance around it all? It was mentioned that 75% of tournament anglers do not want it. The equipment is already too good!

In reality, what good are pro events. The idea has always been to instruct the public and sell product. It used to be pros would give us advice on boat positioning, water clarity, temperature, type of lure, etc. Now what can they tell us with FFS? Give us the best grid pattern to use while hunting fish? Then what? Tell us which rubber minnow to drop on the fishes head?

A lot of anglers did not know about this pattern until ffs. Now they are able to target them.
