  • Since making this video, I left Scotland... forever. I talked about why I made that decision in this video: • Why I left Scotland......
If you're wondering how to move to Scotland or what are the living in Scotland pros and cons, this video is for you. What I'm talking about is especially true if you're moving to Scotland from USA or if you're moving to Scotland from England and it answers questions about retiring to Scotland.
I delve into details about the cost of living in Glasgow and other Scottish life tips because Scotland life is not what I expected. There are loads of not-so-obvious benefits in Scotland so if you're thinking to yourself should I move to Scotland, I think this video will provide some answers to help you make this life changing decision.

I'm not Scottish, but just to offer my opinion based on my research on Scotland:
The salaries really depend on the kind of job you're seeking. I'm more into IT, and quite frankly, the salaries were ideal.
There are jobs available, but remember, they'll prefer British and EU citizens for their posts as compared to non EU citizens.
I met with a British individual some time ago who told me that the UK gives even more preference for EU citizens than the British.
But all in all, great video!

@@manichalla443 It depends on which area you live in. Avoid city centres and focus more on outlying areas. For the Glasgow area, head for Paisley or, Clydebank areas. Flats are cheaper than city centres to rent but, not a great deal less, again, it depends on the type of accommodation. If sharing, it can be cheaper. While out shopping, head for Aldi`s or, Lidl`s and avoid places like Waitrose or Sainsbury`s. Tesco is good.
Its a good idea to check out accommodation through Estate Agents 1st, that way, you can logon with the details 1st and lists will appear for you to browse through. Just google Property to rent, Glasgow or, which ever area you fancy.

So true Monique, I actually really like rainy days and everything that comes with it, like you said, the beautiful, green, healthy nature, I'll add to that super clean delicious water, cleaner streets, even cars don't need that many trips to the car wash. The problem I struggle with is the bad combo of cold, rain, dark and really short days in winter. Winter is so hard here

Hi Camelia, I moved to Glasgow from Milton Keynes in 2017, and although I am British, there are lots of subtle differences for me too! I agree with your points, especially the weather! Glasgow is an amazing city and it is great, but if you have a mortgage then the cost of living is still relatively high, although MUCH cheaper than the south of the UK. I am a teacher and I am interested in sharing my experiences about the differences between teaching in England and Scotland. It is a bit of a cliché, but the people, in general, are very friendly here too. You are right though, getting a permanent job can be hard.

public transport in Scotland is fantastic. If you want to see bad public transport go to anywhere outside the major cities of Australia or the USA where no one walks, and the car is king. Admittedly the trains are expensive in the UK as a whole, and for longer journeys it is sometimes cheaper to fly. A few years ago while taking a train from Glasgow to Wick with a bike, the train broke down just outside Inverness and there was taxi's waiting for everyone to take them further. There was also a taxi just for me and my bike. I don't think I would get that service anywhere else.

The problem is the weather. Inverness & highlands has poor summers (reality). And can be very windy & overcast/dark. I noticed this a lot when I lived in southern England & would fly up to visit, the dark clouds that emerged. This may not bother some people but when you have a long-ass winter and your spring/summer is lot of wind & rain it kind craps on going for a nice cycle or walks, outside beers, skateboarding, outdoor cafes or any outdoor activity. It’s a shame bc when the sun does blast, everything looks amazing & stunning. And people are nice wherever. You get good & bad, and that goes for Sussex or Scotland. And the jobs opps in the highlands are underwhelming, not a whole lot of variety. And the inflation here is rising sadly. Everywhere has its pros & cons.

A bit of an important question. Should I be worried about Scotland wanting to be independent and the whole thing with Brexit? Should I still stick to my goal to move there and stay? If scotland is able to become independent they'll probably rejoin the EU after a few years but those times would be tough right? Or what would happen if they had to stay with the UK?

The monthly expenses depend widely on where you live, I would suggest Glasgow but Edinburgh could be good too if your business is in tech. I can’t answer your question about business, again, depends what business it
Is and who you want to do business with, what you sell etc etc. That’s a question you can only answer for yourself

You might be talking about masters degrees? Before Brexit, Undergrad fees for students from EU and Scotland are under the HOME category and are paid for by SAAS, therefore free for students (I think there's an application fee, but something like a couple hundred pounds). Rest of the UK (RUK) students pay £9k / year for undergrad. EU students who will start their studies in 2021 will no longer be categorised as HOME because of Brexit and they will have to pay International Student Fees. This is not in place for EU students who start in 2020
