    Just shows you don't always require the piledriver of the fleet, sometimes the smaller truck works better than the big 'Tater.

      While it's always great to overcome a problem with maximum force, or to put it another way it's always nice to use the "big hammer," It's also cool to use JUST the right tool for the job - no overkill, the proverbial "just right."

    Here I was as somebody into buses, trains, streetcars, etc. a little over a year & a half ago curious to see if there was a video on TH-cam of a bus being towed... Never would I of guessed I would discover such an amazing channel & service. Keep up the great work, Ron!

      Ron Pratt
      You do a nice job of creating good content that should offend no-one. You teach being polite and respectful by example, and get across the concept of working to earn a living, and to take pride in that work. What the heck is wrong with people to leave nasty remarks about you, and we who enjoy watching what you do. I will never drive a tow truck, especially at my age, but its fun to ride along with you on youtube and enjoy the challenges and successes with you.

    The other day I was watching some of RepoNut's videos on autoplay, fell asleep, woke up to this video and spent way too long while half asleep trying to figure out how a school bus got repossessed...lol.
    Then I realized it was Ron Pratt. Your videos are great. No drama, and very interesting. And you bring a level of calm to tough situations in a way I doubt few people ever could. I don't know how you do it day in and day out, but well done!

      IDOT has and uses their own authority with small to large wreckers that are Code lighted. They pull fender benders, wrecks or breakdowns off the highway and onto a nearby route/street off the highway to an area where the tow company can pick up. You can find a few of those video on here.
      Some other states allow companies to request with the local station and-or state stations to install and run code per law or regulations. Most others have no laws pertaining to such law or regulation to run Lights and sounds

    Great video and did not know all the tricks to towing a school bus. It appears you do not downshift when coming to a stop or slowing for a sharp turn and the tach looks to drop to idle RPM. I thought downshifting was recommended to conserve the brakes. Keep the vids coming as I learn something from each one.

    Well, I know, that my dad always used a thick rope. That was looped back into itself, then a sailors knot was tied into the open end of the rope after the door was shut on a given vehicle, that he was towing with a conventional wrecker. Or if we were towing a vehicle on the wheel lift of a rollback!
    Moreover, we have gotten a lot of flooding last month, in the area of Oklahoma, I am in right now, however, I am not sure if it has gotten any better since last month!

      I suppose that would be an idea. We just want folks to be safe and in turn, keep us safe so we can get home to our families. My father and son-in-law are in this with me and it is certainly an unwelcome thought that one of us might get hit. Thanks for thinking of us and God bless.

      Most definitely watch out. It's about the operators safety. I was watching a video based in California, apparently they have the same law, they said on average a tow truck operator gets hit every 6 days. It's bad people can't get over and some people lose their life over it. God bless.

      Certainly in UK the vast majority of drivers could not care less about what is occurring - as far as they are concerned you are a huge nuisance and they will not slow down or move over a bit. So many reports of recovery/incident personnel being injured, sometimes fatally. A sad world sometimes where little respect is afforded.

    Amateur question: why do you run the Breakaway chains straight back versus crossed like you would do when you tow a trailer? I love you videos keep up the great work.
    Chase

    • @captgary278
      @captgary278 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the chains are crossed there is no danger of them being too short to
      make a tight turn if you should have pulled them up too tight. Ron would
      never make that mistake so no advantage in this case. . On tows
      connected to a pintle or ball there is major advantage should the tow
      disconnect. The chains will catch and cradle the tongue of the tow and
      keep it relatively straight behind the truck. If the chains are straight
      from truck to tow, the tow will almost certainly overturn before you
      can stop as it will go to one side or the other.

    • @Joshua79C
      @Joshua79C 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never cross them on a tow truck, not in the rule book for good reasons.

    • @radicaicares
      @radicaicares 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Capt Gary, Thank you very much for your excellent answer.

    • @legohead6
      @legohead6 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another reason you cross them for a trailer is if the trailer breaks away they act as a sling to catch the tongue(providing slightly more control to the driver and reduce the risk of damage to the road and truck/trailer). On a tow truck like this with such a long span they wouldn't do much catching.

      your just wasting time. As long as the drive are up there is no need to pull the drive line. An if you are I hope you are not putting them back in. Always let the mechanic put them back in. They have a certain torque the bolts are suppose to be at, if not they could come back out and you could be held at fault.

      Well as Ron says, "Failure for Communication" or similar indicates a CAN bus failure, most likely that the engine ECU has died or partly failed. With the ECU being the 'brain' of the engine, it's not going to run well or at all with it malfunctioning.

    I can see why you didn't hook onto the back axle, the distance was too far. and the front was too low for the under reach, wise choice.

  • @stanpatterson5033

    Hi Ron, nice work. If the front end of that bus (which does have quite an overhang...) was going to be too low, would chaining up the drive axle and towing the tail down a bit lower be the solution, or do you have other tricks up your sleeve? I honestly thought the nose of that bus was too low. Low enough to worry me. But hey, I wasn't there in person, and only had a few quick glimpses of what the video showed. I'm guessing the drive axle is air ride, but not sure about the steer axle. What's your take on it? Thanks.

  • @billyboi57

    The engine fan serves two purposes. It provides cooling for the engine coolant and it also comes on when the air conditioning is used. In the case of the air condition in the heat removal process is what is know as head pressure on the a/c compressor. The fan removes that heat also allowing that pressure to come down.

    I think im wrong but the bus only has half of a crossing because it being a flatnose bus, the length of the arm doesnt have to comphensate for a blind area caused by the hood, cause it doesnt have a long hood.
    Please correct me if Im wrong
    My school district has flatnoes with full size arms and long noses that sometimes have the "wire frame" crossing arm, so i have never seen half sized crossing arms
