Homeless in New York City Since 2005: Charmain’s 3rd Interview

  • Charmain has been homeless in and out of the New York City shelter system since 2005. This is Invisible People's third interview with Charmain. While we love reconnecting with friends, we hate homelessness, and this story validates how broken NYC's homeless services are.
You may have seen clips from both of Charmain's videos featured recently on Homelessness: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO) [ • Homelessness: Last Wee... ]. If you haven't watched John Oliver's show, please take the time to view it. While it has a comedic spin, it's the first national show that shares how public perception affects policy change, which is the focus of our work. Unfortunately, politicians are putting more resources into getting homeless people out of sight than trying to solve homelessness and help people, which will only worsen homelessness.
Many people think homeless shelters are a solution. Yet, while shelters can play an essential role in a support network providing a path from the streets to housing, homeless services are broken, and people like Charmain fall through the cracks in the safety net.
Charmain is provided with a bed in a shelter, but she doesn't feel safe as an abuse survivor, so Charmain spends much of her time outside. Her boyfriend is now in housing, but homeless services do not allow couples to live together. So if Charmain sleeps there, both of them will be kicked out. It really doesn't make any sense.
Charmain is intelligent and resourceful. She has to be to survive the streets for this long. Charmain wants to work, but she will need time inside to heal from years of trauma to be able to maintain a job.
Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here invisiblepeopl... to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

All those bureaucrats do is take the money given to them to support their jobs. Getting housing for these people is a lost cause with them. GO-FUND-ME works far better! Besides, the legislators are only filling their own pockets. Look at Nancy Pelosi as a prime example! Her Napa, CA, property is worth well over 25 MILLION DOLLARS. That's just for starters.

This is so wrong that this lady has been on the streets for so long and only offered a room sharing facilities with men. I'm also a domestic abuse survivor and it makes me mad no one is helping her more. It is really important to educate people how hard it is for homeless people to get a place to live and be able to financially manage it. I wish this lady all the best. X

I've found myself downbad and homeless after a 5 year breakup in Australia. Im still healthy and have a car but the housing crisis and covid has truley made that pathway incredibly hard. i still work, and i occationally purchase hotel/hostel rooms to treat myself to creature comforts like a bed and facilities (its approx 80 dollars a night cheapest) and i have too much pride to accept handouts (that's not humble, i literally can't bring myself to do it). I wonder the differences between homelessness in new york and the Australian city i live in, stay strong to the people out there struggling - we're our only real help and you're better than your situation.

I hope she knows about the community refrigerators in NYC. They're wonderful and donations from restaurants come many times a day. Good quality, best bakeries, fruits, salads, yogurt, always fresh food. If you google community refrigerators in NYC, there is a list. What a lovely woman Charmain is. I hope things get better. I can't place the block this video was taken on but if it's the village, there are refrigerators there.

A dream of small self sustaining communities where the unhoused can come to live, work, build skills, get paid, and save their wages for when they fly the nest. Build on the things that are most important; connection and purpose, that is how to end homelessness.
