    If you want to live some place cheaper live in Oklahoma. I am on the opposite side of the livability spectrum. I moved to Oklahoma because living cost are cheaper. What a mistake, I would pay 1200 a month on a interesting city block any day. My point is, invest in life not a house. Cheap is boring and dull, trust me, Portland is worth it.

    Born and raised here. Traffic is challenging. My sister from LA area visited recently, and noted the traffic here is worse than the LA area. Sure, the LA area is bigger, but getting from point A to Point B here in Portland can be challenging. Still, Portland is a great place, and its not the places such as bars, restaurants and outdoor entertainment, its because a lot of really innovative creative people are moving here: I am one of the few Portland natives that welcomes people from other states and countries. Think about it , what makes a city: its the people.

    I want to move to Portland! Right now I live in a super dry and hot area during the summer and the winters get super snowy and freezing. Im needing to relocate to a warmer place due to chronic pain the cold temps here make my pain a lot worse. Ive been to portland before in the fall, and it does get cold and rainy, however i don't think it would get as cold as here which the avg during the winter is less than 20 degrees, but please let me know if I'm wrong! I also heard getting a professional job there is competitive and i think the rent there is comparable to where i live now. I don't mind the rain and i prefer sweater weather lol... but if it gets in the single digits over there then it may not work...

    Homes are expensive to anyone who makes less than 60k a year. You can’t take your kids to parks because the homeless community have take over and established their own living quarters with their tents. Getting around can be hard being that there is only 2 major freeways one which leads into Washington state. Very liberal(not that it’s bad but FYI for those that care) Not many churches. Rains a lot.. you can plan for a great weekend because the weather shows “sunny” and you wake up to a storm. Beaches and coast it gorgeous but cold.
    Not much to do unless you are an outdoor freak and love beer...

    What I find difficult is getting an accurate idea of what property costs are. I know that in my city/county, rent and mortgage costs vary so much. The downtown area can be double the cost for a similar property half an hour away.
    Are there affordable areas outside the downtown area of Portland that are good areas? I'm guessing the suburban neighborhoods would be cheaper than living right in the heart of the city.

    So living in Portland, Oregon is expensive. Renting or owning. Is it cheaper to live in the suburbs outside of Portland? I honestly wouldn't pay that much for rent. But if it's cheaper to live in the suburbs consider moving to the suburbs. It's kinda like that here in Chicago. Chicago is expensive to live in. It's a little cheaper to live in the suburbs. Portland's geography makes it impossible to solve bad traffic by adding lanes. There are just too many pinch points because of the rough terrain. Portland has many appealing qualities, but the traffic and homeless were offputting for me.

    Portland was great when I moved there in 2006. I had a 2br for $700 and it didn't feel overcrowded at all. Somewhere between 2010-2015 things started going downhill. Alot of people blame the show 'Portlandia' for it's growing popularity. Theres nowhere in the whole metro area that's affordable now. I'd recommend checking out the Eugene area or possibly Bend if you love Nature and don't mind the cold and snow. Salem is bland even though it's a college city. Grants Pass location is nice since it's more in the country if you want that vibe and just a couple hrs from redwood park in CA. But it'll be harder to find jobs outside of the Portland metro area.

    I live here too and I have considered leaving for the same reasons! Have you looked at Chattanooga, TN or Knoxville, TN? Cost of living is a lot more reasonable and they have BEAUTIFUL naturesque landscaping like Portland. Especially Chattanooga. Property taxes are less than HALF of what Portland metro is. The big CON is bugs & humidity. But I lived in Memphis at one time and I hardly noticed the humidity because a/c is everywhere. (Although I prefer natural cooling instead of having to run the a/c all the time.) Boise, ID is also very nice (pristine) but I love rain and they hardly have any. Lol (I also like Smyrna, GA and Alpharetta, GA .... lush landscaping and very clean.)

    I'm used to traffic because I live on the east coast right now and we get so much summer traffic it's crazy. Specifically I live in Delaware (born and raised) and its rather boring. (Delaware also doesn't have sales tax though)
    Reading up on stuff about Portland though, everything sounds absolutely perfect to me. I love grey skies its my favorite! I heard it doesn't get too cold or too hot there. The nature in Portland is absolutely stunning.
    The only turn off for me though is those prices. I've been very low income a majority of my life but living in a placeike Delaware gives me much depression for various reasons and I can't imagine living anywhere else because Portland sounds absolutely perfect. Hopefully my boyfriend would be willing to move there with me and maybe my best friend too. Split the cost of living lol
    Oh also I love coffee and cute shops. If you ever go to downtown Lewes DE you will find cute and historic places but there's not a lot of stuff and things close to Rehoboth are always being remodeled. It would probably be a nice place to vist though if you haven't already

    • @EsperanzaLorena
      @EsperanzaLorena  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does actually get pretty hot (90's-100's) in the late summer months (July- Sept) and it gets very cold in the winter with long winters but I imagine that if you don't mind that kind of weather it's not a big deal! It just depends on the person :)
      There are tons of people who live in Portland and split a house with roommates so you can definitely find lots of listings for places to rent like that! I've had a lot of friends that do that :)
      You would absolutely love all the coffee and shops in Portland! Lot's of really fun spots :) Thanks for the tip! I will have to put it on my list of places to check out on the East Coast :D

    • @EsperanzaLorena
      @EsperanzaLorena  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol when I created this video I had no idea it was going to get so many views... I'm a full time Instagram content creator so my followers and I definitely care about food, coffee shops, and Instagram! That's who I was gearing towards in this video. To answer your questions; in my opinion rent and housing is very expensive compared to other major cities. Average rent for a 1 bedroom in the city limits is $1,600. A 2-3 bedroom home in the city limits starts at about $400,000 in a "bad" neighborhood. I've seen them for $600,000 in the nicer neighborhoods. The city does have quite a bit of crime like any other major city. It's below average in violent crime but above average in property crime. Cost of living is 29% higher then the national average. Most popular employers are Nike, Intel, and OHSU which pay between $41-121k per year. Hope that helps!

      @@J509-b8c I used to live in Tacoma, WA and yes, I know how expensive it is to live in Western WA. I've also been to Phoenix, AZ but I didn't realize it's so expensive. Well I know Scottsdale is a nice area, but still the rental prices are ridiculous! Now I understand why you feel PDX's rental prices are not that bad. I live in a suburb of North Dallas (Plano) but I bought a home.. that was more convenient then renting.. however, you get more bang for your buck. Regardless, I still want to move back to the PNW or a state in New England 🤔😍

      sbostic08 Nice! I like Dallas. A lot of different stuff to do there... I am from Eastern Washington obvious it’s a little cheaper than Western Washington depending on what city you live in. You know?... Man honestly I just can’t stand the winters in Washington I get really depressed. I hate having four seasons! Other than that I like Seattle more than AZ. Here in AZ everything is so spread out like living in bunch of suburbs kinda how California is set up. Also some of the younger ppl here act like they are still in high school they click up like in groups. Unlike Seattle ppl are. You can go out by yourself in Seattle meet ppl and they will let you tag along for the night. I just need to go back in visit hahaha
