This era of Maynard with his band was the best. His band was killer and the trumpet section was stellar. Peter Erskine on the drums, this was the all-star team of music.
I saw this VERY performance done live 2 times back in the day. I bought the vinyl as soon as available straight away, still own it. Some of the very best EVER done . . .EVER!!!!!!!
That's the Firebird horn. A trumpet that is designed like a trombone but with only 4 slide positions. I had the rare opportunity to play one of these. Wild!!! And way over priced! But really cool.
Got to see Maynard my Junior year in school....awesome performance as he came out into the audience and stood next to our seats and played. His band was amazing!!!
All the myriad of channels on tv now and no entertainment like this to be found. Mike Douglas and Merv Griffin both had great entertainment in the daytime. Look what you have now. And there will never be another Maynard.
I was able to see Maynard and even Buddy Rich in '81 at the Uni I attended. We had some multi-talented trumpet players in HS and Uni and, Maynard influenced them all, especially those who could make those horns scream lol. In HS, my Jr. year our Band Director bought a valve trombone (I played E flat horn in JH and Baritone in HS and Uni and, played Treble Cleft. I took the trombone music and practiced until I could transpose Treble to Bass Cleft) because he wanted me in the Stage Band. I did same in Uni. I loved playing this type of music.
He played at North Penn High School in Lansdale, PA. when I was a trumpet player there in "78. He came back several years later and made it an annual ritual until he died and I was there every time!
This was probably my favorite MF song as a kid. I practiced it, practiced, practiced. I could never hit high notes like Maynard. Me and my trumpet playing friends idolized him. I got to where I could play E above High C for a little bit which is enough to play the theme of this song. Even that would wear my lip out after a while. He is playing so much higher than that here, it's ridunculous.
Even after all these years I love this tune. I know, I know...Maynard's commercial stuff....bla...bla...bla. So what. It's a great programatic piece of music, and Maynard poured his heart into it. Hey ffreguson1975...I'm not ashamed to admit that Maynard is my hero, too! As MFhorn13 said...Never before...Never since. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of TRULY amazing cats out there that I love, but Maynard is one of the true trumpet gods.
I remember seeing this played live on the mike douglas show!!So happy i was able to find the video!! The boss!! He was a freak of nature!! greatest high note player!! hands down!!
saw him a bunch of times but oen time in particular front row center seats were turned in and I got them. Wow, is all I can say. The singers sang to my wife and I, he was right there. One couldnt ask for more.
Thanks for that clip. I miss the old style talk shows like Mike Douglas. I doubt you would see an instrumental band on any talk show now. Maynard was awesome. Those guys in his band were the best and the brightest of musicians... musical nerds. I was a kid in marching band at the time of this and all my instructors worshipped at the feet of MF. I personally liked Herb Alpert and Chuck Mangione more but I always appreciated Maynard and even more after I learned how gracious and giving he was.
Personnel: trumpets (L to R): Joe Mosello, Stan Mark, Dennis Noday, Ron Tooley trombones (L to R): Randy Percell, Roger Homefield saxes/woodwinds (L to R): Eric Troub, Mike Migliori, Bobby Militello piano/keys: Biff Hannon bass: Gordon Johnson drums: Peter Erskine
He was THE BOSS. One of the best trumpet player known in all times. Rest in peace Maynard. A showman, a singer, a band leader, a teacher, always showcased his pupils during concerts. Not much morfe needs to be said.
Bill Chase was influenced by Maynard, Bill tried to mimic MF in every way possible, just look at pics and the videos, they DID look a lot alike...can you blame him though? The differences were Bill was a lead player, the best ever INMHO, MF was an out front soloist, never a lead player (even on Kenton's band he played 5th and fly lead 8VA), MF played higher than most but Bill topped everybody for endurance...especially on the CHASE band...Bill was at his best up to G's and A's but it was non stop pounding...both Chase and MF had a charisma and excitement not seen in today's trumpet players
Bill was Bad Ass To The Bone.Saw him play in Dallas with his band in 74 and it Blew me away to the next state! If he wouldn't have died I would have been his next drummer!
That music inspired sooooo many marching bands! (and and directors). Drum corp too. When I was growing up, THAT is the music I wanted to play. I was a t.a. for his BIG BOP NOVEAU tour at CSUSB. Maynard was sooo nice and wanted Lobster for dinner. I think we got the lobster from Red Lobster.
The Vero Beach High School Band is playing this song for the opener of our halftime show this year, Its a really awesome song to play and really fun. The halftime show is called El Fuego de la Noche which means The Fire of the Night!
Peter Erskine taking care of business back there. Always loved this piece, awesome arrangement on the album version with the chorus at the end. Jay Chattaway's work???
Tahnkas for posting this its soooooo .... only a couple words describe it ..... Musical Perfection . Soooo good anyone who has performed on stage knows this is like the best sex .... even w two women at once ...
Mac Tec...HEHEHEHEHEHE...I hit Double High E in HS (GREAT Stage Band!)....almost crapped my pants. Mercy Mercy Mercy was one of our Best pieces. Miss Maynard. What a set of Chops!
1:06 and here he is (before he went on to play with weather report, steely dan, et al): peter erskine, one of the world's greatest drummers and educators -- still, to this day ...
+David GROVE The Firebird is very rare, standard ones have 4 positions, there are 7 position prototypes, but only 2 ever existed, the first one being damaged.
Imagine that. Not even a guitar-strummin' vocalist-composer of "original" music. Purely instrumental music--it's wouldn't last more than 10 seconds these days--despite the explosion of channels.
Just have to say at 3:48... WOW! Even for Maynard that is absolutely sick. After coming off that triple E down to the A it is like that note is just a high C for him. totaly unbelievable.
Hadn't seen him play his banana slide trumpet before. Great piece from my trumpet idol for the past 50 yrs and more. Douglas did have some good music on his show, which Dr Phil counters with many negative "vibes".
O.o how did he, I mean he just kept going up and...sine tone...ultrasonic...WOW. I get it, it's "The Maynard", but he got so up there that it stopped being a trumpet and became a ...I don't know...an oscilloscope? unbelievable...inhuman... awesome.
Amazing that the band was allowed over 5 minutes with no interruptions or commercial messages. TV was so much better back then.
of course it was. Real talent that took years to master. now just a boatload of dreck
It sure was. I miss variety shows. Mike Douglas was the best.
It should be illegal to dislike Maynard!
It's so fun watching him it feels illegal!
I saw him in person on a high-school jazz band trip . One of the most memorable times of my life .
I saw him in the 70s in Florida totally awesome.
Maynard is my hero. He influenced me to play the trumpet at a higher level than I otherwise would have. And his music still inspires me to this day.
This album is FANTASTIC top 3 for him easily
Mike Douglas had the best musical guests of any talk show 60s-70s.
The background buzz that permeates the entire song makes it very special.
That's the Firebird horn. A trumpet that is designed like a trombone but with only 4 slide positions. I had the rare opportunity to play one of these. Wild!!! And way over priced! But really cool.
Joseph Taylor its like 7 k i wish i could try one
#Iwant1
I thought there were five positions if you were careful not to drop the slide off the end
My bro. had one for a time. But in true 'starving' musician form had to sell during lean times :-P.
Great Maynard era with the leisure suits and the big tinted glasses. Larger than life.
That's a hell of a slide in that trumpet. Keep on rockin Maynard.
Rockin in heaven since he died in '06.
one of the most incredible performances i've ever seen!
There was power, fire and energy in their music. 70's 😭
Love this video... The legend, the master... Maynard Ferguson at his finest!
All the greats, Johnson on bass, Erskine on drums, Colby on tenor, Militello on bari, the best trumpet line of his career.
Truth...
Colby who?
@@sacrafyce7969 Mark Colby

Aww I go there but it's too late
@cov01crew
it was 77. I saw this tour and by far this was his greatest line up EVER!!!
This was probably my favorite MF song as a kid. I practiced it, practiced, practiced. I could never hit high notes like Maynard. Me and my trumpet playing friends idolized him. I came home after school to see this on tv live....Maynard was my hero....saw one his last tour concert in Waukesha, WI
saw him a bunch of times but oen time in particular front row center seats were turned in and I got them. Wow, is all I can say. The singers sang to my wife and I, he was right there. One couldnt ask for more.
You can tell he loved playing.
Thanks for that clip. I miss the old style talk shows like Mike Douglas. I doubt you would see an instrumental band on any talk show now. Maynard was awesome. I once saw Maynard and the orchestra performs this in an amphitheatre in DC. He went out into the audience and peformed a solo that was off the hook!
AMAZING! every second of this song is just simple, pure amazingness!
I hit super C once. It was about '87 or '88. Was in traction for a week!
Mac Tek I hit my first and last double high C when I got a colossal hemorrhoid.
Alex Korova
Shouldn't they call them assteroids?
Bass trombone. Hernia. It was a low note though. Just kidding.
Cant even hit it in my dreams
I can't even describe this in words.
Still listen to my my conquistador record often. Gonna fly now, mr mellow, Star Trek, soar like an eagle, conquistador, the fly 🐬
Personnel:
trumpets (L to R): Joe Mosello, Stan Mark, Dennis Noday, Ron Tooley
trombones (L to R): Randy Percell, Roger Homefield
saxes/woodwinds (L to R): Eric Troub, Mike Migliori, Bobby Militello
piano/keys: Biff Hannon
bass: Gordon Johnson
drums: Peter Erskine
Filetto Grigio Mark Colby on Tenor. I studied with Mark when I was grad student at DePaul in Chicago.
Stan Mark said this trumpet section was together for 4 years!
Excellent. Maynard in top form. Mike Douglas had a nice afternoon show. What do we have now, "Dr Phil" in the afternoon. Gimme a break!
He was THE BOSS. One of the best trumpet player known in all times.
Rest in peace Maynard. A showman, a singer, a band leader, a teacher, always showcased his pupils during concerts. Not much morfe needs to be said.

And they both used Jet Tone Mouthpieces
Bill was Bad Ass To The Bone.Saw him play in Dallas with his band in 74 and it Blew me away to the next state! If he wouldn't have died I would have been his next drummer!
thebigall21 Thought that Bill used a Schilke 6A4a mouthpiece... Pretty small...
JJ Martin the Jet Tone mouthpiece, AKA a nickel with a dent and a hole in it!
+JJ Martin
Notice the pistol grips the trumpet section is using?
That music inspired sooooo many marching bands! (and and directors). Drum corp too. When I was growing up, THAT is the music I wanted to play. I was a t.a. for his BIG BOP NOVEAU tour at CSUSB. Maynard was sooo nice and wanted Lobster for dinner. I think we got the lobster from Red Lobster.
Simply the best lineup and chart … full of power to the end
Mike Douglass always had great jazz artists on his show...Ferguson and Bill Watrous were among his favorites...
That ended in the quad range. I don't even know what it was. Easily an octave or 2 above a double C
it was an triple c
double C was the norm for him I remember after the band class saw him at Somerset High School we were all in awe
i'd love to note he hit above the double C?
4:48 is mostly an E-flat above triple C which was intended to be an E natural.
Rumor has it he actually went higher, but such pitches cannot be heard by the naked human ear...
I had never seen this clip before. Thank you for posting it. Maynard was amazing!!!
Real insight into his use of air at 4:04! Mindblowing performance.
The Vero Beach High School Band is playing this song for the opener of our halftime show this year, Its a really awesome song to play and really fun. The halftime show is called El Fuego de la Noche which means The Fire of the Night!
My Daughter Aubrey was in the band for that show...Trumpet player.
LOVE the line at 3:48!!! And LOVE the Triple C at 4:48!!!
God I want to play this song in my high school jazz band so much....
Peter Erskine taking care of business back there. Always loved this piece, awesome arrangement on the album version with the chorus at the end. Jay Chattaway's work???
Great point JJ Martin. Thanks for the lesson on Bill Chase.
3:53-4:11 is incredible
Musical in all registers
never knew he did this on douglas how in the world do you find these its awesome for us who started following him in this era
I was in the audience
Tahnkas for posting this its soooooo .... only a couple words describe it ..... Musical Perfection . Soooo good anyone who has performed on stage knows this is like the best sex .... even w two women at once ...
Love the slide action!
Amazing triple C. I wonder if anyone else has ever done it. Beautiful playing to boot.
Byron Yount Wayne Bergeron has.
I've gotten to double high F and my teacher can go to quadruple Ab
its only impressive if you can play it loud
Gavin Hardison impressive if you can do it at all
Eduardo Flores plenty of people can squeak above double c, doesn't require much practice or skill to force out a note like that
And it's done live. Not 100 takes. To put yourself in front, where everyone would see a failure Maynard could deliver!! He was on fire this day!!
Mac Tec...HEHEHEHEHEHE...I hit Double High E in HS (GREAT Stage Band!)....almost crapped my pants. Mercy Mercy Mercy was one of our Best pieces. Miss Maynard. What a set of Chops!
Just saying....what a gem!! Incredible sound and surreal Upper register notes by the one and only.......BOSS>
Colossal capabilities and heart ❤️..Most respectfully..Vaughn 🎺
That snare sound is crazy
good drummer he kiks as fast hands great band just loved it like wow
1:06 and here he is (before he went on to play with weather report, steely dan, et al): peter erskine, one of the world's greatest drummers and educators -- still, to this day ...
HE WAS A CREATIVE GENIUS
Just outright amazing by the nicest guy to ever blow a double C!
Superman. Elvis with a horn. GUTS, and the power to back it up.
Blew the Fukin roof off!
I was half disappointed that more high notes weren't being played, but then when 3:48 came up, I realized why :-)
Is that a trompet or a trumbone?
***** It's a trompetbone !
*****
No....it's a slide petbone.
That is a firebird slide trumpet designed by MF.
+David GROVE The Firebird is very rare, standard ones have 4 positions, there are 7 position prototypes, but only 2 ever existed, the first one being damaged.
both
That slide trumpet is cool.
He wasn't the boss...he IS the boss, will always be THE boss.
sweepee1013 nah Doc Severinson
I live the rhodes with the wha wha pedal and what a flute solo!
@theweave, I heard him at North Penn in 1977. I went to Souderton high school at the time. He had chop problems that night!
Very nice! It would be great if the uploader could add the year in which this was filmed to the video title and/or video description above.
@jazzmfhorn00 His sound is AMAZING, thank you very much!
Petar Erskin on drums?
holy shit is that a slide trumpet with valves?
Yes
greatest Trump player in the world. saw him several times in Orlando areas like Disney and cocoa.
Mark Colby - tenor sax
Bob Militello - Baritone
The boss was the best ever! I met him several times and I miss him!
спасибо и спасибо тем,кто помнит!!!
Fantastic 👍👍👍👍👍❤️
That tenor saxophone solo
Imagine that. Not even a guitar-strummin' vocalist-composer of "original" music. Purely instrumental music--it's wouldn't last more than 10 seconds these days--despite the explosion of channels.
2:50 dudes rocking that tambourine
Thanks!!
Just have to say at 3:48... WOW! Even for Maynard that is absolutely sick. After coming off that triple E down to the A it is like that note is just a high C for him. totaly unbelievable.
Double D down to double A. D-C-B-A-G#-B-A. The last whistly note was a triple C of sorts.
Yeah. That whole line he plays starting a 3:48 is just unreal.
@tpt1234
actually Bruce Johnston isn't in this. The Tenor player was Mark Colby. But I totally agree...AWESOME!
Amazing
very wonderfull
The great Mark Colby on tenor sax. RIP.
Gotta love the fire bird trumpet.
Triple E.MF fue un cientifico de la trompeta y gran musico.
That was a triple C
Q: Can he do that?
A: My neighbor's dog says, "YES!".
I need that trumpet
Amazing! Musician!
muito bom maynard ele era o cara
Hadn't seen him play his banana slide trumpet before. Great piece from my trumpet idol for the past 50 yrs and more. Douglas did have some good music on his show, which Dr Phil counters with many negative "vibes".
Only dogs are capable of hearing his last note. Unreal.
Please upload " One oclock jump & Every Day I Have The Blues . Thank you !!!! :))))))
That is not a flugel horn. It is a Firebird slide trumpet invented by Maynard.
O.o how did he, I mean he just kept going up and...sine tone...ultrasonic...WOW. I get it, it's "The Maynard", but he got so up there that it stopped being a trumpet and became a ...I don't know...an oscilloscope? unbelievable...inhuman... awesome.
great song
4:44 He just surpassed Chuck Norris.
One requires either feathered hair, an afro or an epic beard to play this. No exceptions. :P
Shannon McGowan lol
