I was at this concert..I was 16 years old. I am a grandma now, sharing the good book of 70's Rock and Roll with my grandkids, especially Skynard. RIP Legends
The sunshine, the tans, the guitars, the weed, the free lovin, the no cell phones, the hair....the '70's. Yeah. Once you hear this one, there is no going back from rock and roll. Period.
Those were the days when guy's displayed their gun racks in back window in trucks but nobody was shot! That was another time in history! We really did care for each other! 😢
What a grand goodbye! Within 4 months (110 days), the singer and one of the guitar players, Stevie Gaines would die in a tragic plane crash. GREAT group! AWESOME song! Excellent reaction video!
To me, the coolest thing about this performance is that the true leader and front man of the band Ronnie Van Zant (RIP brother) just stepped back and let the boys do their THANG!
He always did. One of the Southern Rock traditions is that the band will get front and center on every song. Skynyrd did it, Allman Brothers did it, Steve Miller Band Did it, Charlie Daniel did it. . .they all did it.
That’s so true! He knew when to step back and let the boys tear it up, and when it was time to reign things back in. He didn’t have to be center of attention the whole time like a lot of the insecure d-bags out there today.
Man for man, you'd be hard pressed to find ANY other band with nearly the talent that Skynard had. And I'm not a huge fan. Like 'em, but not even in my Top 5. But talent wise? These guys were Top Shelf all the way across the board. They were true masters of the game. And think about it. It's hard enough to get TWO guitarists to truly help a lot of the time. Ego gets in the way. Not with these fucking guys. Not only did all 3 of them kill it, but they even had a PIANO PLAYER that had chops. Serious chops. Piano player doing a solo at a ROCK concert? These dudes were the real deal. Period.
None of these guys had any formal music education, they all dropped out of high school at 16(except for Ronnie) and would smoke pot and drink mushroom tea and rehearse 10 hrs a day in the hell house and they were still that good!
@@michaelchmiel166 , Ronnie demanded excellence. To the point that he could be a violent dictator of sorts. This band worked their asses off to sound this good, live! A discipline that many bands do not have because, as you said, everyone wants to be the standout! They were all standouts in this band!
Young lady that was a great, it was kind of the feeling I got when I first heard them in 1977 live at the Oakland coliseum at 16. My mom had to sneak me in there and convinced the ticket-taker that I was 18. My mom was a hippie from the 60's and I love her for taking me to this concert. It got better after Lynyrd Skynyrd stop playing Santana came on after them. Bill Graham used to put on these concert in the summer called Day on the Green and it would cost about $8 to get in and they would pack 65,000 people in the Oakland Coliseum. It was awesome they stop doing the concerts in the mid-80s unfortunately. Great reaction young lady keep doing your thang!❤
I was 16 and my mom God rest her soul took me to this concert at the Oakland coliseum 1977. These concerts were called day on the green and they were presented by Bill Graham who used to be a promoter. The idea was to come spend the day on the green grass in the outfield. Born and raised in Oakland, we don't have these concerts anymore and we don't have the sports teams that played in that stadium anymore, pretty sad! I do have the memories of all the great music and all the great people that would come together without any cell phones, just some good smoke & some good music!! The crazy thing is for $12 I also saw Santana, Peter Frampton and a group called The Outlaws, on the same day!!
LYNNYRD SKYNNYRD, "FREE BIRD". I can only imagine the crowd these days. I see many parked at the gas station staring at their unintelligent phones. When I started going to concerts we knew about the groups, and their catalog of songs. It was the best being part of these thousands of music loving party goers. Simply The Best.
You are so right that “the 3 guitarists came together and tore that shit up!” They stomped a new mudhole in that stage is what they did. I have long since stopped caring about Free Bird but watching young reactors, such as yourself, witness it for the first time never gets old. I was 18 the year this was filmed. So much good music in the 60s and 70s! You are doing a great job finding it and reminding people my age how those songs made us feel the first time we heard them and what they have meant to us since then. Thank you!
Oh my goodness! I was there it was a whole weekend of 🎶🎶🎶 so many bands and I burned like a piece of bacon 🥓🤣 I just found out a few yrs ago I'm in the crowd footage. Some might figure it out I'm blonde!! Great song n reaction✌️
allen collins is the most underrated/underappreciated lead guitar player in rock history. this rendition of free bird is the greatest live song ever made...
I was 13 when this was being played in Oakland. @9:45 you look like you just had your soul yanked on. This is old school southern rock and roll. It knows no color, it knows no boundaries. It will always your heart beating very fast. Like a long lost friend calling to say hello once again. Thank you for sharing these old memories.
If you want to see Allen Collins lose himself in that guitar solo go watch the Knebworth performance. He plays it longer and the camera stays on him and less in the crowd. The lead singer had to tug on his shoulder to get him to stop because the drummer couldn't go anymore. Great reaction! Needle and the Spoon 1976 is another great one
Yes at Knebworth Ronnie really turns Allen loose on the solo...They do at least 3 speed ups during the solo, only did 2 speed us in Oakland...and yes Ronnie has to reel him back in as Allen would just keep on going. I saw them live in their hometown of Jacksonville back in May of 1976....they played even longer ...wish that had been filmed ....another version I love the Convention Hall in 1977 ...it is filmed in black and white but it has the best shots of them all playing much less focus on crowd.
Loved your reaction! Your face told the reaction story of hearing/watching the masterpiece that is Free Bird. As April Dawn wrote below, I recommend all people watch the FULL version of Free Bird at Knebworth. There is an edited version that edits out some of the piano, for some reason, so look out for the longer version of Knebworth. The other added element to that concert, LS was opening up for the Stones that day. LS were told that they could not go onto the "tongue" portion of the stage, as that was for the Stones only. Watch what Ronnie does with that, LOL. LS blew it out of the water that day, and as usual. Everyone who loves LS and the song Free Bird needs to watch the Knebworth version!!!
Watching someone experience the change in pace of Free Bird the 1st time is awesome! Plus young people experiencing what exceptionally great live performers these 70s bands were.
I've always loved how Free Bird starts out as kind of a ballad, but then slowly builds up to just knocking your socks off ! ( Skynyrd was one of a kind...that's for sure !! )

I LOVE to watch young people discover Lynyrd Skynyrd. You have witnessed one of the top greatest rock-n-roll songs of all time from one of the top guitar bands of all time. They sound just as amazing live as they do in the studio. That says something.
What a wonderful reaction to an iconic anthem by a legendary band. I wouldn't trade the era in which I grew up for anything. I'm so happy you enjoyed this... and you've earned by sub, FWIW. Thank you!
Yes, we saw your reaction, and you were AMAZING. Seeing you react to it actually brought tears to my eyes ... just to see how you were moved and felt. It brought me right back to when I first experienced this. I lived right there in the Oakland Hills, just 2 miles right up the street/hill from the Oakland Coliseum, where this video was recorded (Day On The Green concert). My brother and I each rented a room from the owner, and could look down the hill and see it from the front balcony and windows. Unfortunately, I attended another DOTG concert either the weekend right before or right after this one, and didn't have the pleasure of seeing them. The one I went to was awesome too, but it didn't get a video, or feature Skynyrd ... Damn !!! I'm stoked at how much you enjoyed it and would have LOVED to been there with you. You are a special person and seem like a lot of fun.

I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd (second generation) 5 times in the 90's and it was lit! Straight 🔥! What an experience. Loved your reaction, especially at the end. Feed Love! Starve hate. 🤘
All those girls out there in the audience our grandmothers now. I know one of them's probably my wife. I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd here in Nashville in 1973 '75 and '76.. They always had the cleanest sound... and loud!
Loved your Reaction! This was Southern rock and I'm from the South. I saw them do this at Memorial (football) Stadium in Charlotte, NC on July 13, 1974. It featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything. And and it pleases me to no end to see people watch this (and other performances from the 70's) and realize this is how we rocked!
thanks for doing your best trying to enjoy this southern rock. many people who are now around 50 who's families were into NASCAR grew up believing Free Bird was was the national anthem
The Greatest!! Watch That Smell or Needle and the Spoon live can’t go wrong with either! I was in my late teens when this group was putting out the greatest Albums ever assembled R.I.P to all the original members.
I love the live version where they have the piano solo ,ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL !! And then comes the guitars !! And hold on to your hat cause it is MIND BLOWING !! 🤘
I was a little kid in the 70's and a teen in the 80's, but we loved those 70's bands just as much as the teens and adults who saw them live back then. Maybe more because we literally just missed it. I grew up with those bands from birth (1973). My uncle snuck me into a Sabbath concert when I was 5 yrs old and he was watching me for the night so my parents could go out. I miss that time immensely.
Three lead guitars, a bass, piano, and drums, all in perfect harmony. These guys were the best live. Cut short in their prime due to a plane crash where six out of 26 died, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. It took them a while to get back together, with Ronnie's brother, Johnny taking the lead in 1987. Their newly released album at the time, Street Survivors, featured the band on the cover surrounded by flames. The label recalled it and removed the flames on the re-release. My brother had one of those original albums for a long time but somewhere along the line, it got lost.
Ronnie never thought this song would do much. The record label didn't want to record it because it was too long. Not only did the song become a hit, It became the National Anthem of Southern Rock. It was a good thing there wasn't a roof on the Colosseum, because It would have come down. It is unfortunate that they were taken so soon. Long live Southern Rock! Thank you for your reaction.
Only a few months before we lost them in the plane crash.A great video of a great song from a great band. Thanks for the memories, an emotional experience for me too.
I'm sure video is not as good as being there, but video does have the ability to transcend the viewer. Thank God for good camera operators that preserved epic moments in time and music history...may these countless video, audio, and digital records never be lost to Mankind.
What a great reaction. I was at at their show in Philly during the tour that year, and still remember it as a special moment in time, thank you for playing this ! I'm not sure if it was the same year but the guitar solo live from Peter Frampton was also a special moment, check it out...Do you Feel like I do is the song I am talking about.1976 I think ? Anyways have a nice evening!

You are now a southern rock and roller.

I'm sure video is not as good as being there, but video does have the ability to transcend the viewer. Thank God for good camera operators that preserved epic moments in time and music history...may these countless video, audio, and digital records never be lost to Mankind.
