Kawasaki KDX200A engine repairs - Episode 1

  • Welcome to episode 1 of my Kawasaki KDX200A engine repairs, I restored this bike 16 years ago and I have noticed recently that it has started to smoke quite a lot and decided to remove the engine strip it down to investigate what's wrong. I suspect the crank seals but find out it a lot more than a pair of seals causing the problem.
Thanks for watching I hope you find it interesting
    regards
    Allen Millyard

No corroded bolts, no stripped threads, no rounded heads, it’s a joy to work on something that hasn’t been butchered by someone who’s rough and ready or knows no better (I’m looking at you...yes you! The one who sold me my super blackbird). It’s a joy to watch someone work on bike like this too, well done and thanks for another great video

I own a 1985 KDX that I bought new in late 1984. I don't ride it so much as I am getting on in years. I am able to ride in the front range of the Rocky Mountains which are just west of my home in Calgary. This Kawasaki has been an awesome bike. I will be rebuilding the rear shock for the first time this winter. It never fails to start. I have enjoyed this video.

I raced air-cooled KDXs for 6 years through all the British, Scottish and North of England Championship enduros, including the 1988 ISDE at Mende in France, battling my way to about 104th (!!!) place in the 250 class, A great bike to ride, never missed a beat or broke down in all those events, and still competitive even now in the right hands some 30+ years later. Arguably one of the best off-road bikes ever made.

Beautiful bike, I’ve always loved those old kawasaki enduros. I had a Honda that had that nikasil lining on the cylinder, I bought it new and it didn’t take long and it blew up and I was told I had to buy a whole new cylinder as it had that coating and couldn’t be machined. I refused to believe them and brought the cylinder to a local machinist and had him bore it out and press in a steel sleeve. Worked perfectly after that 👍

    • @truthboomertruthbomber5125
      @truthboomertruthbomber5125 ปีที่แล้ว

Plated cylinders are a scam IMO. They are needed for 2 stroke road racing bikes but trail bikes should have iron liners.

@@truthboomertruthbomber5125 I bought that bike new in the spring and it didn’t last the season. Fixed it during the winter and it worked great with the sleeve for the next year and a half or whatever it was until I sold it.

    Nice going Mr Millyard !
A late motorcycle mechanic friend of mine, was really good with 2-stroke machines. In discussion with him once about single-cylinder crankshaft wear, he explained that the area of the crankshaft diametrically opposed to the connecting rod's crankshaft pin, sees wear the most in the ball bearing inner race fitment area. Reason being, this part of the crankshaft bears the most load on the firing stroke. Too, the side with the heavy magneto/generator flywheel suffers more wear than the side with the primary gear.
I would guess that crankshaft metallurgical issues could be taken into consideration also.
    Thanks .

also the grinding paste on the tapered crank is a great idea, I bought a 1977 Honda CG125 recently and on my first ride out the flywheel spun on the crank thankfully no damage apart from a worm down woodruff key (Honda GX160 woodruff was the same phew) then properly torqued down with some thread lock but if I ever have it off will definitely be doing the grinding paste!

You’ve definitely got a one in a million mate. Cup of tea AND a smile. Perfect.
    PS
That taper tip has given me hope that I can cure the dodgy Morse taper issue on my Clarke pilar drill. It keeps ejecting the chuck - even when it’s only mildly stressed. But I might need to remove the tang to do the job properly. That was the last thing I bought from Machine Mart.
The alternative option is to make a vertical miller style drawbar.
