It's a game made by the creator themselves. Lack of color is basically every UE4 game with default lightings ever. Upcoming Shonen Jump game, every UE4 demo ever, and all those UE4 games on Steam. The default lighting in UE4 is the problem. Unless the devs decided they want to write their own lighting codes, UE4 games will look dull and shitty. Fortnite was initially made with UE3 I believe. And it's a game made by Epic Games... if it looks like shit, Epic might as well kill themselves. Why bother releasing an Engine that they had no idea about then?

@Joshua Shank exactly they never get bad. That's the only studio that can accomplish that yet. Rockstar games are always legends in open world no matter what. They always gave a variety of things to do in every single game. Not just pasting boring collectibles and that's it, no they add a layer on top of that with different side missions like all GTA games and that's lacking in other open world games that are not made by rockstargames. At the end of the day rockstar will always win no matter what. They know how to create an open world game and they even accomplished in these hard days for the gaming industry to get a masterpiece right here. Ubisoft, all other developers never managed to get that level.

Games from 10 years ago still look really good....I think we are hitting a wall with graphics and now developers are focusing on little things to help make the game feel more realistic...if you looked at a game from 2010 and a game from 2002 you would see a huge difference but a game from 2018 and 2010 the difference is much smaller.
That's the lowest common denominator holding games back (consoles). The latest PCs have far superior tech but no company will invest in them.
There is still A huge difference between red dead 1 and red dead 2 it’s like night and day almost everything is more detailed and more variety in the 2nd one.
I believe videogame industry is reaching a top when it comes to visuals, graphically speaking. However, that doesnt mean they cant keep getting better. I think the idea from now on is to stop trying to just "pretend to look real" and start trying to actually "feel real". For example: Making every building in a city enterable, every cloud in the sky not a texture, every single spectator on a sports game highly detailed, every single leaf, every stone and every grain of sand on the ground an individual object and not a texture on a huge polygon, etc. Games will now start to get better not visually, but phisically, slowly decreasing the use of textures to fool the eye and increasing the information that it can be procesed so those objects actually become part of the game's world.
Don't forget Red dead 2 is designed for the base PS4 and Xbox one, which are about 1.5-2 terraflops. My gtx 1080 I s 9 terraflops, imagine what they could look like with that power. Roll on PS5.
The point is, are graphics hitting a wall? Even top tear developers have already said next gen will not have the that big a graphic leap over this generation...

Maybe it’s because in the time period of red dead redemption 1 (which was further in the future) , explosives were more powerful than in rdr 2 ( which is why the explosion is “worse)

I was up in the Grizzlies for a stranger's mission and, out of curiosity, had Arthur walk on one of the frozen lakes. What surprised me was whenever Arthur slipped, the lake made that cool booming sound frozen lakes make in real life. It was that attention to detail that blew my mind. Also, I love how the snow tracks look different depending on the kind of snow you're walking on; the fresh snow looked fluffier and the older snow looked dirtier and slushier. Unlike the first RDR, I didn't feel the need to get to where I wanted to go as fast as possible because traveling doesn't feel tedious in this game. I spent several real-world hours slowly trekking to Amberino and back and enjoyed every minute of it. At one point, I stopped near the border of Amberino and New Hanover and could actually see one biome merge into the other. I wanted to take a picture of it, but by the time I got the camera out, the view of New Hanover completely misted over as it started to snow. It was fucking awesome.

A great comparison. The sound comparison for the revolver also showed how far Rock Star has come with the animation. In the original RDR, John looked like he was shooting a double-action revolver, just pulling the trigger. In RDR 2, Arthur looks like he is firing an authentic single-action revolver, having to actuate the hammer with his thumb first before pulling the trigger for each round. Reloads look more authentic too.
In 2010 rdr1 looked STUNNING, I remember being blown away by it. Now in 2018 rdr2 continues the legacy with its stunning graphics.

Dynamite is dynamite. Not much has changed about it with time.
@mabbohabb Depends on a chamber size, the length of a barrel, the amount of charge etc. The sound of a weapon being shot is much more dependant on different factors than the sound of an explosive device. That being said, the subject matter is not the sound, it's the visual side of the explosion. Dynamite is a nitroglycerine based explosive, its components were not massively altered since its inception so the effect of the explosion should look the same, especially given the fact that the amount of time passed from the second game to first is not that great.

I love how good this game looks no matter the console. My friend has it on an original Xbox One and I was amazed by what Rock Star achieved. I have it on the X, and I can't stop drooling. I may see the doctor about my drooling problem when I beat the game.

well i know for a fact that the gun sounds in red dead 2 sound a lot more "real" the reverb you get after the gunshot has been heard is audible in red dead 2 as opposed to red dead 1 where its just the gun shot and no ambient changes in the air/world afterwards.
If anything I’m even more impressed with the first Red Dead Redemption. These games are ahead of their time, respectively.

AC Odyssey is not really that good looking. In fact, I'd argue that the best looking AC game is AC Unity to this day.

If you’re gonna do a direct comparison, you might as well have gone to new Austin in rdr2. You have to get to the epilogue to do so though
I whistled for my horse and kept running, thinking she would come up alongside and let me just jump on in a continued stride like in the first one. Instead she stops about 8 feet away and I have to run to her and hop on. I have the white arabian with the current best stirrups and bonded level 4. It doesn't feel like she goes any faster than my war horse. Handling is a little off during ambushes, she's ran into a tree twice already when i was aiming... I still don't get this all seeing, all knowing wanted system. I keep getting pinched for crimes no one saw me commit.

Looking at Red Dead 2 I don't see how anyone can go back to the first. Part 2 just improved on everything and the graphics look amazing. It was kind of like WTH I used to think this looked so good.
Yes, that'll happen when game developers actually have a passion for what they do and the desire to outdo themselves with every release. Sadly, us gamers have just been putting up with the same shit but a different title. Whether its Assassin's Creed, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Destiny, etc. I'm not saying some of their devs have no passion but these companies have definitely went more corporate and are mainly only looking to maximize profits. Rockstar probably is doing that, too. But thank God they still put the work in.
