We Chinese do not have the culture appropriation concept simply because we do not feel oppressed or inferior at all. Actually we are proud AF. This is a sheer US social problem.
Pengyi Gu The US is fucking crazy man. Maybe if they had free health care, they’d all be able to have the therapy they need and calm the fuck down! Lol
Pengyi Gu Ikr. I’m saying the people that get mad about cultural appropriation are people that aren’t apart of the culture at all. I’ve seen and heard people of cultures say that they love sharing their culture. Next thing you know if we eat certain food that’s cultural appropriation.
People just like to find things to complain about. Most of the people “offended” by it aren’t Chinese or Asian to begin with, by the looks of it. The reason why the would support that Jeremy guy’s frustration is so that the world won’t see them as racists or xenophobes through the eyes of other people who follow their same ideology.
RELACHIII I love your channel, helped me come to terms with my sexuality. And same, as a Chinese I think this is a good thing. I’d be proud to share my culture with others.
as a chinese, its the fact that she said its just a dress. That dress has so much history and depth behind it. not to mention they also used a stereotyped Chinese pose. picking up a cheongsam and thinking you can just use it as your prom dress is NOT ok. i will say that alot of people are overkilling it tho
@@nicoletran3796 well I don’t think the pose was meant to be offensive. But even so, you could say the pose was racist but I think it’s still ok to wear the dress. Yes it has history behind it, and I would hope they acknowledged that but I think it is in the end a dress that shouldn’t be limited only to native Chinese people.
As a Chinese, I agreed with you. I believe the Chinse Guy in the video is a faked Chinese. We will never be angry for a dress. and Qipao is very beautiful. So I support the girl.
I'm glad to read that, because I'm a latin woman and I really want to travel to India someday and buy a lot of indians clothes, it's so beautiful! Where I live there is some stores with indian-like clothes, but is not the same...
@@sarahrebeccateixeirademour8945 You're most welcome to visit here any time. Western India is pretty safe as such but yes it's better if you travel with someone or in a group. If for nothing else, it's better to know an Indian who will prevent you from being charged too high and fleeced by vendors. And stay away from our capital lol, it's a shithole 😄
@@aissabathily5818 Suits, ties, short hair, the latin alphabet, etc. are just as much ethnic as the top knots and silk robes worn by the chinese. The only difference is that we are to used to it being the norm that we dont consider any of it cultural. If East Asia colonized the world instead of europe, we'd be arguing that (insert chinese fashion trend here) is not cultural while the suits worn by the Victorian English are ethnic attire.
I’m chinese. This girl looks very beautiful in that chinese dress. Try traditional chinese clothes hanfu(it has different forms) You will look gorgeous too. Welcome to try our culture clothes and welcome to try different fashion styles from different countries. ❤️❤️
My wife wears traditional cambodian dresses and she is caucasion. She get lots of respect and praise for wearing it. The guy who posted this is too sensative.
honestly, everybody in China is so happy that she chose a Chinese dress and nobody got offended. It's a good way to spread our culture and I don't get why people are pissed.
@@squizzyicetea yeah i mean it was their agenda, making like chinese clothes being worn is problem, people aren’t actually pissed, the media are just trying to make it look like that, that’s why it only made waves in twitter
I am Chinese. Honestly, I feel happy that she choose a Chinese dress in an important moment of her life. I totally don't understand what's so called cultural appropriation. Quite interestingly, almost everybody from the Chinese social media supports her for what she did.
+Slslsl I moved from a Asian country three years ago, what you said is partially true, not all Asian just admire white people for no reason, racism is everywhere it's hard to get rid off that, dear, why don't we want to share our culture around world, culture is not a symbol of inflexibility
NyanGirl sparkle, no she can't wear whatever she wants. Things are not like that. You copied something from someone, make sure, you respect whatsoever is being said.
Jules A well considering one is a disgusting hate group and the other is something that is literally illegal to do I'd say that's not a very accurate comparison
Claire is awesome I was replying to the statement "She can wear whatever she wants"! And as you can see, i showed that her statement wasn't true at all and that there are rules. Noone cares, if she looked beautiful in that dress (which i do not agree). Would she be denied wearing the dress, if she was ugly? Couldn't she just wear something simple and local?
Well she didn't WANT to wear something "simple and local." Quite frankly, what she wants to wear is NONE of your business so if she wants to wear a Chinese inspired dress then she can go for it! She was not in any way disrespectful lmao.
Myeesha Odom People need to get overt their issues and stop pretending to be offended 🙄 I would understand if she was being purposefully racist making fun of the fashion but she wasn’t she was celebrating her liking of the piece of fashion that is the diversity we need in the world, we want racial equality but we still believe that sharing our culture is bad the world can never move forward with this mentality, it’s as if the white population stopped other races from wearing Scottish Kilts of French berets! Or Even simple jumpers and bras because they were made by ‘white people’ NO that’s ridiculous so why dose it matter if she wants to wear a Asian patters or wear a Saree? Acceptance of other cultures and embracing them is a step in the right direction, people need to wake up and realise that cultural appropriation is a barrier in the race to end racism!
This might be part of the reason nextshark.com/kezia-daum-qipao-utah-asians-suck-vine-twitter/ However, Jeremy also said some controversial things nextshark.com/jeremy-lam-twitter-racism-prom-dress/
if she wore indian dress and started doing bollywood dance moves that is also offensive no? learn what the issue is about please. If she never made mocking poses with that dress or say asians suck in a video this wouldnt be a big issue im guessing
just a random gal I don’t think so, people just dug that up to get dirt on her. It was just a quote from a popular vine. The outrage over cultural appropriation often happens on Twitter or Tumblr among entitled generation Z Americans. A lot of of them truly believe all whites are racist, which may explain why the tweet blew up to the extent of making it on GMA.
David Lafleche cultural appropriation is when you take something that has an important meaning and don't respect the meaning of it. For example, few people should wear the Indian feathered headdress as fashion, the kind you see the chiefs wearing. The issue isn't that non-natives can't wear them. The issue is that each of those feathers has to be earned
Sage Art R2: just my personal opinion but I think that’s fine. It’s not like she’s taking it and making it into a “white” thing. The dress is beautiful and if I saw someone who wasn’t Asian wearing my cultural clothes I would be ecstatic. Now if they were trying to promote our cultural symbols and design into their clothing line, business, etc then yeah that would be another thing.
i am Chinese and i feel like there isn't any problem for the girl to wear that dress. we embrace different cultures and she is not doing anything disrespectful to the culture so I don't see a problem here.
I think the main thing you need to accept is that if you don’t understand something, you should probably keep your opinions and comments to yourself until you do.
SWJs: We want diversity! We want different cultures represented in our country! Everyone should embrace other cultures! Also SWJs: How dare you wear a dress from another culture?! Like what's the logic behind this? These people can't be pleased, they will always complain.

too sensitive? i call that perspective. I see what your saying but asian are different to western. You may see it as being too sensitive but to them it is cultural value. So you just got to understand them.
uh no. Only a select few are over reacting. This is not an Asian culture thing. This is a far leftist thing. The far left has it up their ass to be offended by anything regarding race and culture. If you actually took the time to read that twitter war... it was mostly white liberals being triggered. Along with their very select few who were actually Asians. The rest of the world doesn't give a damn about someone wearing a dress for a celebration. Had she been mocking a culture, maybe the backlash would have been reasonable. But in this case, it is purely a sense of entitlement coming from the far left. They feel entitled to tell others what to wear, say, feel. It really is just virtue signaling. You won't see an Asian who is center leaning or conservative making a deal about this because this isn't a race thing AT ALL. It's not a "Asian perspective". THIS IS ENTIRELY A FAR LEFT PERSPECTIVE.
M4tchStickGirl However, it’s most important to note, for those of us who aren’t meme lords, that this was just a remake of a popular vine that went viral not because of the racial angle, but because of odd way the person said the word “suck.” Context matters.
If you feel proud of your culture than you have to share it with others.... I have seen many American Girls Wearing Indian Sarees, Salwar. As an Indian, I love it and feel Proud.... If you feel the shame of your CUlture Only then you will try to stop others from doing your cultural things.
I'm Taiwanese American and I gotta say she's slaying that Qipao! This SJW has gotten outta hand. Am I supposed to get offended when I see a Non-Asian person getting Chinese Tattoo? Are white people supposed to be offended when they see a Non-White bride wearing a white gown at her wedding? People are really sensitive nowadays smh
Personally, I find it comical when someone gets a tattoo of a Chinese character, not really knowing what the Chinese character says. It's comical, but not offensive.
People are just too sensitive like it’s just a dress, she didn’t set it on fire or anything disrespectful 🤷🏻♀️ why do people make every little thing a big problem?
BirdsandWitches speak for yourself. Cultural appropriation is ironically racist, dictating what other races can and can't wear. Guess what? Humans have been around for a long time, and have been copying other cultures for centuries. Was it cultural appropriation for Chinese men in Hong Kong to wear European style clothing during the 19th century? Likewise, is it cultural appropriation for Europeans to use silk and chinese pottery which they got via the Silk Road? If anything, this just shows that the world is more connected now than before. Cultures can be fully embraced by other ethnic groups. The real ignorant one is you.
I am Chinese and I don't see any issues here. I went to Korea and took the photo while wearing Korean traditional clothes. My friend went to Japan and wore kimono. I don't understand why this becomes a news. ~.~
怡帆슨 uhhh.... it is just a freaking dress... you know jean and leather jacket are from America, and everyone in the world wear it. I think it looks good on her and I would encourage her to continue to wear it just to piss you people off.
怡帆슨 People wear clothing because they LIKE it! By your logic, Chinese people should only wear western clothing when westerners give them permission. Guess what, in China, most people don't care.
because of cultural marxism and gender studies students utilizing social media to push their agenda . you are allowed to enjoy other cultures but the girl they are criticizing is white and to those gender studies students shes the problem. oh yea your not allowed to enjoy black culture because them you wold be attacked
As a Chinese, I’m glad that she shared her appreciation for our culture to her friends and media! Me personally loves this appreciation and support for the Chinese culture!
We should be supporting other people wearing our culture's fashion. Sure, our fashion is special and has a meaningful history but other people are also proud of it too. They can wear whatever they like and I think the TEENAGER looks beautiful in that dress.
GUERRILLA SUNRISE if you read the comments people are actually happy about the dress and guess what they are from the culture1!1!1!11!!1!11! you are just taking this to far and no I am not apart of a white supremacy group thanks xoxo
Jesus .... Do ppl not remember back in the late 90s when the Asian fashion was the rage with the girls wearing chopsticks in their hairs ? This no different. I'm Asian American .. doesn't offend me . I'm more offended that she just left her hair down instead of doing a beautiful updo.. it's prom for heaven's sake. Go big or go home.
This is a Z-gen thing, we weren’t alive in the 90’s, I don’t think cultural appropriation as a problem, at least in this case, but I’m not from the US, so I think it’s an American problem with the younger generation everyone born between 1995 and 2012.
Back in the 90s even the Asians themselves were all about the cultural appropriation. Although the Azn Pride fad is something we'd rather forget about.
Cece Gomez yes, definitely a young American problem. I see all this entitlement from my generation and it’s disgusting. But it’s nice that Chinese people don’t care about this, hopefully Americans can learn from the majority of Chinese people who don’t see a problem with it. My generation needs to relax on the entitlement!
t that’s just a remake of a popular vine... the funny part is the wheezing laugh, not the “joke.” And I’m sorry your friend went through that, it’s not okay for anyone to bully. That being said, this girl did get a lot of hate and she may have even if it didn’t go viral. We don’t know. It also depends on a number of things, like popularity and if someone is already targeted by bullies or not.
No what you fucking mongoloid? That was most certainly a pose created by H3H3. In other words for someone with your completely idiotic brain IT WAS NOT RACIST AT ALL! Though I am, you fucking loser.
She wasnt doing a stereotyped asian pose lmao, that was meant to be the h3h3 papa bless pose and the guys behind her were even doing the vape nation sign 😂😂

Actually there is cultural appropriation happening all the time. Although it could also be cultural Acculturation. This is what happens when different cultures come together. People from all over the world come to the US so you can actually witness cultural acculturation in the US. Also cultural appropriation happens back and forth all the time and it's been happening for centuries. For example, apple pies are considered American but apples originated from China. If you find an American girl wearing a Chinese dress offensive then why not find the Chinese wearing blue jeans offensive because jeans originated in the US.
It is so stupid. Complaining about every small cultural detail either makes us overly caring of what we do and prevents us from doing literally anything or desensitises us to this so when we are actually mocking a religion, race, sex, etc.. and people complain, no one cares because it's just another feminist flying off the rails or some other abbreviation of the sort. It's so stupid and i'm glad you all agree :)
White ppl: it’s racist! me, a fully chinese girl living in China: I could care less edidt: ok wow everyone is so triggered in the replies. i know that asain americans have it hard in the US, but you guys are really lucky living there. my parents have always wanted to move there, but haven't been able to because of the financial cost. sometimes, you guys have to stop and appreciate the fact that you are living there and stop being so offended by some small things such as this.

Interesting as celebrities have used these kind of dresses all the time and no one has ever said anything. I have always viewed it as celebrating the other culture, not the other way around.
Hahahah... The Ginger Spice from The Spice Girls wore that type of dress all the time... they even made a doll... sigh... then again Katie Perry got criticized for wearing a Kimono.... which Madonna did 20 years ago and issue...
YOUR RIGHT - THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO HAVE A PROBLEM ARE IGNORANT MORONS AND VERTUE SIGNALLING NARCICISTS. CULTURAL APPROPRIATION IS NOT A THING - ITS CALLED CULTURAL APPRECIATION AND HAS BEEN USED BY ALL CULTURES AND ALL RACES THROUGHOUT HISTORY. IT IS NOT A PROBLEM AND ITS NOT DISRESPECTFUL. Courtesy, Consideration and people minding their own business is a thing of the past. Most people believe their own opinions are so valuable but in reality, they are worthless.
Amanda Nicole I just saw a comment that had a link where she said that Asian people suck and started laughing if she didn’t like Asian people why tf is she wearing a Chinese dress I think it’s honestly disrespectful
I’m Chinese and I saw this news in Weibo. I just come here to say that she is very pretty wearing QiPao. I’m very happy to see people likes our traditional clothes. In fact everyone that comments in Weibo all have the same feelings with me.
1Dudette4Ever QiPao has many kind of designs. If you search in google you will find a lots of different colours and cuttings. Yes it’s for rich people to wear in old times. It can be very expensive.
Many people in China have been asked there thoughts on this and it seems that pretty much everyone doesn't mind it at all and has no problem with it. She looks good in it and isn't being disrespectful so nothing wrong here. Chinese people don't mind people enjoying things from their culture, something which they are very proud of. Attack them or their culture and that's a different thing and many Chinese people have already said that she isn't in any way doing that and that they enjoy seeing others enjoying their culture. Sound to me more like people just trying to make trouble or perhaps some being Jelious because she chose to wear something different and interesting. These dresses are worn by many in China, everyone from the everyday person to prostitutes.
+fjoolololol Blackface is not Chinese and has racist symbolism. The qipao/cheongsam is of Chinese origin and has no racist symbolism (although some could argue that the qipao/cheongsam is a cultural appropriation of the traditional Manchu clothing). It's common sense to use dark makeup to depict a black character. But it's inappropriate in America since blackface is part of a racist American history. I'm not sure what you mean by both ways. If anything, it's the Chinese that takes no offence in any of these things, while the Americans takes offence in all of these things.
fjoolololol But this isnt about americans, tjis isnt their culture, this is chinese culture. And if they support people wearing chinese inspired prom dresses Americans have no say in the matter just like they have no right to continue depicting a black character with black face if it is insulting to that culture. Two wrongs dont make a right.
BirdsandWitches who cares. It's not hurting anyone. Show me empirical evidence from a peer reviewed study showing negative effects of wearing something like this if you are not the "correct" skin color.
BirdsandWitches so what? Its just a dress she really likes, nothing wrong with that she appreciates the aesthetics, and now she has to take a hail storm of frankly bullies harassing her, personally i commemorate her for not backing down to the witch hunt mob, she is pretty much not apologising for the absolute nothing she did wrong.
Crystal Nielsen So I'm not crazy! I'm like, "I remember dresses like that at MY prom"😂😂😂 so, I guess any time you're not of that ethnicity it's "appropriation", but if you are it's "appreciation"?🤔
I am a Chinese from China. I am happy to see her and any non-Chinese people wearing the Chinese style clothes for their important days. And most Chinese people in China are on the this girl's side.
Oml these people are getting offended by every damn thing 🙄 I personally love the dress but if she happens to disrespect the dress in any way then that is wrong but other than that I don’t see anything wrong with the dress
I see nothing wrong with her wearing it at all! It's a beautiful dress and different cultures can wear styles of other cultures if they choose to. I was in a commercial recently for a Chinese festival commercial in China but they came to America to film it and used different cultures. I had a great time in the commercial and they also gave me the dress afterwards. I have worn it since and will wear it again on different special occasions as it is beautiful.
In the first picture she is doing the folded hand "namaste" which is a part of Indian culture, I as an Indian did not feel offended in any way can someone explain me what cultural appropriation means
Im a Chinese. I totally dont understand those people. I would be very happy if some non_Chinese people wear Chinese style dress. You dont need to know the history behind this. It is just a kind of fashion.
Cici Fan as an Asian American I’m kind of sort of mad at the dress because I know what it’s like to get bullied over wearing an ao Dai or something and to have someone wear a traditional dress and get loved by Caucasians is just crazy etc. this doesn’t make sense but it kind of does to me
Gabriella Underwood I’d feel like it’s not a “traditional” anymore since it’s being used for “fun”. But it’s just a dress, she’s not bashing anyone so idc. I don’t know why people are getting mad over it 🤷🏻♀️
As a Chinese living in the states I'm actually proud to see a non asian wearing our traditional clothing... beats having them make fun of it. And that pose is a common prom picture pose...hell I even took a prom pic with that pose so #stopgettingoffended
If you think that's a traditional clothing, you obviously don't know shit about China, and you don't own its culture, so please don't represent us, chinese, as in whole for claiming it is a traditional clothing.
Rainn Chen i dont wanna start a fight but can u pls read ur sentence again? When did I ever say or imply I owned its culture? And when I commented, I had no intention in representing the entire Chinese community. I was only speaking MY OWN OPINION as a Chinese. And yes, you're right I don't own it, I'm part of it. I was born and raised in China, and when I first came to the states, I was made fun of for wearing shit that was popular back home at the time. And what would you call this clothing then? I could've called it a qi pao, but I'm also aware that there'd be people who don't understand so I translated it to "traditional clothing." Please, enlighten me.
ahri ai Your English is probably as bad as Helen Keller’s and Western Clothes is a style and that goes with many other styles of clothes. It doesn’t matter if it was made in China, Germany, or Italy because those are the makers.
ahri ai Show respect? The US and China are the leading traders in the industry. There’s no “respect” in trading. And YES Western Clothing is a style of clothing and I don’t really understand what you are saying because your speech is so poor.
I'm neither Chinese nor Chinese American so my opinion in this doesn't really matter. I have talked to Chinese friends, and I do think the conversation differs when talking to someone from mainland China versus being Chinese American, because growing up in a society where you're othered, you're more likely to be defensive about these kinds of issues.
WWLD Just because you've been othered and excluded doesn't mean you have the right to do the same to others who want to join in on things that are special to you. It may be tempting, but that doesn't make it right.
Honestly lots of Asians put their own spin on Victorian dress, its not like we are expecting to get a history lesson when they play with cultural fashion. If you are feeling offended by something like that there is a deeper personal issue that needs to be resolved with yourself, not with the rest of society.
Why did you have to add that you're not Chinese so your opinion doesn't matter? Just because you aren't Chinese doesn't mean you can't have a say on this. There's nothing wrong with this, people are just so sensitive and need to grow the fuck up. Culture is something that's always being enhanced and changed by inside, and outside forces. Different cultures learn from each other, adopted each others beliefs, etc...
Im asian american. Personally i dont really care about the dress issue but the whole “growing up in a society where youre othered” is completely true depending where in the states. Non-colored people will NEVER understand that and its okay. I feel like if a chinese girl wore that dress to prom everyone would be like “wtf is she wearing?” Or “Of course she wears a chinese dress to prom.” But since a white girl did it, its seen as beautiful and cool. Thats just the world we live in today. Adapt and move on.
as a Chinese person, that dress is traditionally Chinese but that does not mean you are being “disgusting “ or rude when wearing a traditional dress from another country… 《旗袍》and also anyone could wear it, even if your not Chinese it doenst make you rude or anything..
All of yall who got offended are a bunch of snowflakes. The girl can wear whatever she wants. Its none of yalls buisness and quite frankly traditional chinese fasion is beautiful. Who would not want to share it? This whole "race and how you should dress thing' should be eliminated altogether. They are pieces of clothing. They dont say who you are. You do.
Cultural appropriation is not a fucking joke and your comment shows you are very uneducated. A white person in dreads is cultural appropriation, white people have no business having hair meant for a black person's hair texture it's wrong and thAT is ridiculous
Keman Phillips ok so then you think that white people can speak for ALL of the Chinese people in this situation. By that logic 99% of the comment section including this original comment is invalid. Ok then and I'm not white bitch
The pose she was doing is based off of poses from H3H3. The "Chinese hand sign" she was doing is actually his sign he does called "papa bless." And the other guys were doing signs for "vape nation". She wasn't trying to imitate the Chinese culture. She was showing appreciation for a TH-camr.
Montana Dean exactly. And we don't see the Roman Catholic church having a problem with it so there really is no problem. The fact that he is uninformed is not her problem. I pray for pizza every day. 🙏
Montana Dean I’m Asian and I’m so sad about this. She didn’t wear it out of respect; SHE GOT CAUGHT posting her own remake of a racist vine on her twitter.
they were doing the h3h3 signature posture... papa bless (the girls) and vape nation (the boys), when you see the whole photo... this Jeremy Lam probably already knows about it but keeps pushing his truth and hate with 'she was using stereotypical chinese posture'.. to make people feel like it was supposed to be mocking... I'm glad she didn't apologize and there is so many people who are proud and send her their blessings
Ningen I was thinking Japanese...maybe...not sure what he thought it was. He seemed to not know there is more than one culture in Asia. I actually think he didn't know about the pose but that just makes him an idiot. Clearly it had nothing to do with the dress because she was the only one wearing a qipao
Rose Stewart no, he knew what he was talking about. That pose is used when mocking any Asian and generalizes us all as "Chinese kung fu masters." If you've never experienced it, then I'm happy for you. But I've had dipshits do that to me
Seulki Kim no he didn't. It's the papa bless pose from h3h3. He's a TH-camr just as he said. I have no idea what he or you think it is. But it has nothing to do with anything except pizza...if anything it's like a Christian prayer but lol it isn't that either
I'm Chinese, grew up wearing traditional Chinese attires(still wear it proudly), most of my family is buried in chinese cemetaries, grew up in a Chinese temple, went to Chinese-only schools...why are people so mad about this? As long as she's not wearing it to mock us, or being disrespectful, then she isn't doing anything wrong. Werq lady!

It's not your culture so of course you wouldn't be offended. You nor anyone has a right to tell people who are apart of this culture that are offended that they should not be.
This a stupid debate. She liked the dress, bought it, and wore it. Nothing wrong. I am Jamaican. I love Jamaican food. I like spaghetti. Did I just appropriate Italian culture? I am not considering the world's opinions when I make every day decisions. I simply buy or eat things I like with no other considerations. People need to mind their own business. The dress was amazing. If anything, Asian fashion received a ton of extra attention. If someone appropriates something of yours then that thing has merit outside of its original environment. That should be a good thing.
I remember being six years old and being IN LOVE with Chinese culture (I'm hispanic). My mother would take me to oriental markets when I couldn't go to school yet and I would spend most of my time looking at all the beautiful colors of Qipao dresses laid out (I remember choosing this very light blue one to wear for Halloween, even got a decorative fan to go with it!). The owner was sweet about it too! She helped me pick out the right size. ^-^ Man, those were the days. I hope to buy another one since I grew out of it, maybe even for my kid if I have any.
Yes. That's exactly the point. She saw a part of Chinese culture, thought it was cool, and made it part of her culture by wearing to prom. When trying to think of what to wear on one of the most important nights of her young life, she chose to wear something Chinese. That sounds like appreciation to me.
Rachel Currier I’m Asian and I’m so sad about this. She didn’t wear it out of respect; SHE GOT CAUGHT posting her own remake of a racist vine on her twitter.
I'm black and if I see a non-black person wearing box braids I wont get upset unless they're using it to mock black people or something like that. Same if they eat soul food. It's not cultural apropriation unless you're doing it to take away credit from the culture.
i wore box braids and black people where calling me racist and yelling at me I WAS 9 i aint ever doing that shit ever again unless i am not in america. Because i had them in colombia and no one gave a shit BUT IN AMERICA EVERY THING IS INNAPRORIATE
@@myself7232 Imagine a human heart. It's covered in maggots, its flesh is blackened with the decay, and its festering with sores, yet it still beats. That is the left. They want people to be constantly offended by everything to turn us against each other as much as possible.
The “Stereotyped Chinese posture” is a stereotype made up by whites during the years of The Chinese Exclusion Act, the act which prevented Chinese people to enter the Us for over 30 years. The stereotype is that all Asians squat and hold prayer hands 🙏🏼 where ever they go. Please try to understand the cultural significance of this dress before writing a comment to support her.
Angela He I go to China to visit the Chinese side of my family every year (or they come visit me) and I speak to them regularly. No one is offended over in China right now by this girl wearing a dress that most Chinese people don’t even wear anymore. Most are venting online and angry that Americans with Chinese grandparents are acting as if they own a culture they’ve never taken part in when their actual culture is American culture. I might look Asian because of my grandfather, but I don’t claim the culture! I was British born and my culture is British. How Americans are claiming Asian culture when they’ve never set foot out of America and live the American life everyday is laughable.
We Chinese have not given Non-Chinese permission to speak about what offends us or not. Please consult with our Chinatown HQ prior to making any claims. The only thing offensive and racist are the Non-Chinese who assumes we need you to speak for us, protect us, cradle us and segregate us from the rest of society. If we are wearing Jeans and T-shirt, you can wear our traditional clothing. That is equality.
Nothing. It's a guy looking for fame and most of his retweets likely aren't even Chinese. It's funny because this happens for other things. You name a group of people and there's those who have nothing to do with them speaking up "in their defense". When no one asked them to and they don't appreciate it.
I think the issue is that she did a vine remake that says "Asians SUUUCK." which was a very stupid thing to do on her part. However, Jeremy Lam made racially charged remarks on his twitter. So neither party is innocent.
Lily McFalls It was still not a good thing to do. In fact, I have a sinking feeling that she might, key word might not actually respect Asian culture because I have heard that she made a other racially charged tweets. I have now way to confirm this because I don't have a twitter, but if it is true, than that would mean she has lost the benefit of the doubt I gave her.
Please never change. Please please always remain as intelligent and rational as you are right now. You are one of the few people that I place hope on for the future of society.
Hi there! I’m bengali, and our traditional clothes are extremely similar to India’s, if not identical. I don’t mind if you’re wearing and *culturally appreciating* my traditional dress. I.E, you know where it comes from, where it’s made, who wears it, what country it comes from ect ect. But, if you just randomly wearing a lengha or saree, without educating yourself about it, I will get slightly annoyed. My culture is not a costume. Have a nice day!✨ (also. If you live in the uk/London, go ilford road or green street to get tons and tons of cheap traditional clothes! The sweet corn is pretty good too)
Fellow Indian here. It's ok not to know about something provided you're humble enough to be inquisitive and allow yourself to be educated. Not everyone will know everything beforehand. I'm ok with people wearing our clothes for a prom or a party because they feel they look good in it. I'm not ok with people profiting it by treating it as a prop and westernizing it for a quick buck. That's clearly not what the girl is doing so she's fine. She wore a dress to prom, so there's absolutely nothing wrong with it
@@friendusesthisaccountnocom9928 But that's just the place it was manufactured, you don't know its cultural origins. Just because Shrimp Lo Mein is made in the US doesn't make it a product of American culture.

As a Chinese, I’m confused on why people are so mad about this.

What is "cultural appropriation," and why is it wrong? If a black or a white woman wore a kimono, I would think it looked good.
David Lafleche Same, she looks great in it.
Aishwarya Net Is it cultural appreciation if she only wanted a beautiful dress in a vintage shop? And how no intention to understand the culture?
David Lafleche cultural appropriation is when you take something that has an important meaning and don't respect the meaning of it.
For example, few people should wear the Indian feathered headdress as fashion, the kind you see the chiefs wearing. The issue isn't that non-natives can't wear them. The issue is that each of those feathers has to be earned

Complaining about every small cultural detail either makes us overly caring of what we do and prevents us from doing literally anything or desensitises us to this so when we are actually mocking a religion, race, sex, etc.. and people complain, no one cares because it's just another feminist flying off the rails or some other abbreviation of the sort. umu she said it with her own mouth. Would you post that? Would I post it? Heck no
Interesting as celebrities have used these kind of dresses all the time and no one has ever said anything. I have always viewed it
as celebrating the other culture, not the other way around.
TIME WE JUST TOLD THE LIBERAL LEFT TROUBLEMAKERS TO DO ONE.
To be honest I feel like their being racist towards this girl
IF ASIANS SAID IT’S DISRESPECTFUL THEN YOU SET DOWN AND LISTEN BECAUSE NO ONE ASKED YOU WHAT’S YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT THIS. IT’S NOT YOUR CULTURE

gabriel sebastian el hage zotelo yes
@@Skybluesz5 exactly, if an asian person said it was offensive then dont wear it lmfao. my mom's side is chinese and a lot of my friends who are chinese got offended by this
@Ratikant Sharma exactly lmao
Wat... I'm chinese and I think it's perfectly ok for another person of another race to wear something of our culture... I mean she's not criticizing anything, she's just. wearing. a. dress.
“Let’s all unite & work together to become a better society... show our respect to one another...” shows respects, gets hate. Make up your mind people.
Alyy Cat EXACTLY MY POINT, BUT I GET BULLIED FOR IT 🙄🤷🏼♀️ you really can’t win no matter what! I could wear something that is Italian and American made ( which I am ) and I could still get bullied for it
Courtesy, Consideration and people minding their own business is a thing of the past. Most people believe their own opinions are so valuable but in reality, they are worthless.
Amanda Nicole I just saw a comment that had a link where she said that Asian people suck and started laughing if she didn’t like Asian people why tf is she wearing a Chinese dress I think it’s honestly disrespectful
chelsea villafane it was a vine
chelsea villafane she was quoting a popular vine, she wasn't being serious :p
I’m Chinese and I saw this news in Weibo. I just come here to say that she is very pretty wearing QiPao. I’m very happy to see people likes our traditional clothes. In fact everyone that comments in Weibo all have the same feelings with me.
Diana Zhao I didn't know it was called a QiPao. It's very beautiful and so rich in looks as well. It's very beautiful.
According to a foreigner’s research, I saw more than 90% Chinese support you. And I highly support you. Don’t care what they said.
Many Chinese also didn't see a problem with blackface on their TV so it goes both ways.
+fjoolololol
Blackface is not Chinese and has racist symbolism.
That's precisely the point. Relying only on Chinese people opinion who did not grow up in America is a very limited viewpoint.
fjoolololol But this isnt about americans, tjis isnt their culture, this is chinese culture. And if they support people wearing chinese inspired prom dresses Americans have no say in the matter just like they have no right to continue depicting a black character with black face if it is insulting to that culture. Two wrongs dont make a right.
This is in America. Get a grip.
Im asian nah no big deal here!
BirdsandWitches who cares. It's not hurting anyone. Show me empirical evidence from a peer reviewed study showing negative effects of wearing something like this if you are not the "correct" skin color.
BirdsandWitches. It's fine. She would be complimented for wearing that in Hong Kong. Chinese like it when Westerners adopt Chinese fashions.
BirdsandWitches and whats the problem with that?
BirdsandWitches so what? Its just a dress she really likes, nothing wrong with that she appreciates the aesthetics, and now she has to take a hail storm of frankly bullies harassing her, personally i commemorate her for not backing down to the witch hunt mob, she is pretty much not apologising for the absolute nothing she did wrong.
UV Gardener Lam is a Chinese last name because I m Chinese
I wonder if she's get all that hate if no one owned camera phone
Selma Malik no she wouldn't. I wore a Chinese style dress to my prom in 2001
Selma Malik obviously not, because then nobody would have seen it you idiot
Crystal Nielsen So I'm not crazy! I'm like, "I remember dresses like that at MY prom"😂😂😂 so, I guess any time you're not of that ethnicity it's "appropriation", but if you are it's "appreciation"?🤔
Yeah she wouldn't because if someone saw it in person they wouldn't say anything about it. But online, people have more courage to mention it
BINGO. A camera in every hand is ruining a lot of things.
aw i love this, I'm actually from Shanghai, china, which is the place Qipao was created. I'm so proud of that girl, she is doing great!
I am a Chinese from China. I am happy to see her and any non-Chinese people wearing the Chinese style clothes for their important days. And most Chinese people in China are on the this girl's side.

She has a nice body!! Lol
Western problems. They have too much time on their hands
Non-issues seem to be a trend in the west.
I'm a westerner and I agree. There are far more serious problems in the world than this.

What's wrong with being Chinese and having an English name? We Asians have English names because foreigners can't pronounce them.
Wouldn't you feel complimented if someone thought your culture's clothing was so beautiful that they'd wear it on the most special night of the year?
Personally, I’m not Chinese, but I am Thai. Honestly I find it ugly when others dress in clothing that doesn’t fit their culture.
Aiyaluna Yourke I’m wearing a standard shirt, I bet you it wasn’t even made in the US :)
Ryta Marie Which means you should not wear clothing of other cultures since that's your personal choice.
Jeremy Lam, take that Western clothing off. You're offending Westerners!
Rubén Maldonado that apply since wetsernse clothes are made mostly by Chinese in store soooooo
ahri ai Your English is probably as bad as Helen Keller’s and Western Clothes is a style and that goes with many other styles of clothes. It doesn’t matter if it was made in China, Germany, or Italy because those are the makers.
Vinny Cookie those are makers then show fucking respect to other country who makes you clothes most of them arent even made by white people
ahri ai Show respect? The US and China are the leading traders in the industry. There’s no “respect” in trading. And YES Western Clothing is a style of clothing and I don’t really understand what you are saying because your speech is so poor.
ahri ai, just give up. Do yourself a favor and delete your posts. You look like an utter fool. All you did was embarrass yourself.
if you apply the same logic. don’t eat pasta if you’re not italian. only buy sushi if you’re japanese. and no TV if you’re not an american.

doctrinamscio To Fascist Nazis there is! "Degenerate Arts"! Ugh Read our public schools rule books closely! Ugh
I feel offended by him wearing a baseball cap.
Not to mention Backwards!
Adapt and move on.
iamgem do you really call yourselves "people of colour" as asians in the U.S.A? Seriously lmao??
as a Chinese person, that dress is traditionally Chinese but that does not mean you are being “disgusting “ or rude when wearing a traditional dress from another country… 《旗袍》and also anyone could wear it, even if your not Chinese it doenst make you rude or anything..

You do.
There are litterly so many bigger issues on the world than a fricken prom dress!

The hanfu movement would strongly disagree.
Cultural appropriation is sad. Funny and ridiculous..i dont see any wrong with. It. She just embracing another culture.. 😂
Cultural appropriation is not a fucking joke and your comment shows you are very uneducated. A white person in dreads is cultural appropriation, white people have no business having hair meant for a black person's hair texture it's wrong and thAT is ridiculous
gavi deem um does that change the fact that black people have indefinitely different hair texture than white people?
F.S.C
I'm a black male, do not speak for my people, bitch. White sjws like you are dangerous to race relations and society as a whole.
Keman Phillips ok so then you think that white people can speak for ALL of the Chinese people in this situation. By that logic 99% of the comment section including this original comment is invalid. Ok then and I'm not white bitch
if that's the case, why are white women twerking then? Stop it, you women are "cultural appropriating" black women
What's interesting is the people in China love the dress and they think people in the United States are stupid for saying she can't wear it.
The fact that he is uninformed is not her problem.

in a chinese dress, making those poses is poor taste, can easily be misinterpreted and cause this kind of drama
they were doing the h3h3 signature posture... papa bless (the girls) and vape nation (the boys), when you see the whole photo... this Jeremy Lam probably already knows about it but keeps pushing his truth and hate with 'she was using stereotypical chinese posture'.. to make people feel like it was supposed to be mocking...
But it has nothing to do with anything except pizza...if anything it's like a Christian prayer but lol it isn't that either
its funny because at my own prom i did papa bless lmfao, if someone sees it as a stereotype/racist i think it says more about them.

Man, those were the days. I hope to buy another one since I grew out of it, maybe even for my kid if I have any.
As long as you have dark sin, you should be able to get away with it. Notice how no one hounds black people for wearing anime themed clothing.
People are overusing the term now. Cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation are not the same
Yes. That's exactly the point. She saw a part of Chinese culture, thought it was cool, and made it part of her culture by wearing to prom. When trying to think of what to wear on one of the most important nights of her young life, she chose to wear something Chinese. That sounds like appreciation to me.
It's not up to complete Strangers to choose her PROM DRESS

1:21 “stereotyped Chinese posture” Wtf?....
Pretty sure it's the 'Papa bless' stance from H3H3 Productions
Angela He haha no it's not 😂😂😂 you see what you want to see...that doesn't mean you're not blind
GetTheKimura it’s the PAPA BLESS
We Chinese have not given Non-Chinese permission to speak about what offends us or not. Please consult with our Chinatown HQ prior to making any claims. The only thing offensive and racist are the Non-Chinese who assumes we need you to speak for us, protect us, cradle us and segregate us from the rest of society. If we are wearing Jeans and T-shirt, you can wear our traditional clothing. That is equality.
What’s wrong with it? I’m Chinese, and I think she looks beautiful!
Nothing. It's a guy looking for fame and most of his retweets likely aren't even Chinese.
It's funny because this happens for other things. You name a group of people and there's those who have nothing to do with them speaking up "in their defense". When no one asked them to and they don't appreciate it.
seraphilight 好吧,你说的对。哈哈你又看不懂我说什么。我们中国人是你说的这样又怎样。
I think the issue is that she did a vine remake that says "Asians SUUUCK." which was a very stupid thing to do on her part. However, Jeremy Lam made racially charged remarks on his twitter. So neither party is innocent.
just a random gal They we’re making a remake of a vine
Lily McFalls It was still not a good thing to do. In fact, I have a sinking feeling that she might, key word might not actually respect Asian culture because I have heard that she made a other racially charged tweets. I have now way to confirm this because I don't have a twitter, but if it is true, than that would mean she has lost the benefit of the doubt I gave her.
I’m Chinese and this doesn’t offend me at all, these days everyone is offended so easily🙄🤦♀️
Please never change. Please please always remain as intelligent and rational as you are right now. You are one of the few people that I place hope on for the future of society.
People are so sensitive! 😂
She wore a dress to prom, so there's absolutely nothing wrong with it
We all know you don't know jack shit about the cultural origins of the clothing you are wearing right now.
