Bucket list cruises I have taken: Queen Mary 2 transatlantic (New York to Southhampton), as well as Norwegian Fjords. Don't forget about iconic river cruises, like the Nile River!
The cruise that really surprised me and I thought was magnificent was South America from Buenos Aires to Santiago. Cruising through Beagle Channel and visiting the Falkland islands was interesting.
My wife and I have been on over 30 cruises. #1 Mediterranean out of Istanbul. Went to Egypt, (overnight in Cairo), Ephesus, 3 Greek islands and ended in Athens. #2 Baltic #3 Alaska # 4 New Zealand #5 British Isles #6 Panama Canal. #7 Lots of Caribbean cruises. We have booked South American and Iceland cruises.
Thanks again I find myself watching more of your videos. I love the fact that you show all the fun exciting things like that girl with that monkey for the Gibraltar. It gets me excited about cruising.
My first cruise ever was from Alaska, I did what I call my Land and Sea tour, first I enjoyed 9 days on land and then come back to Wittier AK and caught the Royal Princess back to Vancouver BC what an amazing cruise it was warm and sunny for my entire 7 days, spectacular breathtaking. The Caribbean is now on the top of my to-do cruise destinations. Gr8 Video. 👍🏼
Late to the party, but a few other recommendations. Cruise down the Yangtze river, Cruise around the Hawaiian Islands (so you can visit each island easily), Cruise around Australia (so you can visit areas all over the coast and not just one city. Also, River cruises in Europe are nice as you get to visit some of the smaller European towns and villages that you might not otherwise get to visit by flying direct.
We did a cruise on HAL that stopped in Mexican ports they usually don’t stop in (La Paz, Huatulco, Puerto Chiapas) and then hit Guatemala and Nicaragua before stopping in Costa Rica, Panama, Columbia, and Aruba(??). Awesome, awesome cruise, very different to stop in less developed areas, would highly recommend it to people who are interested in adventures over shopping in ports of call.
Would love your thoughts on a transpacific cruise....(US/Canada to Oz/NZ) best tips, watch out for, type of room, add on gotchas, etc.? Love your work.
Only Antarctica and Alaska left to go. I was scheduled to do both just after covid hit so that put a stop to it. Exploring is probably the main reason I love working on a cruise ship so much :)
Hi Gary ! So many wonderful suggestions for Bucket List cruises. Hubby and I have done the Caribbean countless times and love it. If we have been to the port on our itinerary before we take a page from one of your videos and just stay on the ship and enjoy it when it is a little quieter. We have been to Alaska and it was breathtaking ! Will return in 2022 as Hubby requested it for our retirement. Always wanted to do the Panama Canal, so have that booked for Christmas\New Years 2022/2023 on Celebrity Edge! We have wanted to do a Christmas, New Years cruise so this one ticks all the boxes. Hubby has always wanted to cruise French Polynesia - New Zealand - Hawaii, so we are booked on Celebrity Eclipse for 30 days from Sydney Australia to Vancouver Canada! Still on the bucket list is Antarctica and Mediterranean . Thank you for all your helpful information ! Cheers!
I think you have mentioned some of the more interesting cruises available in the pre covid era. In that time, a wonderful trip was had by my wife and I for a special birthday was from Buenos Aires to Barbados along the Brazilian and French Guiana coast. Post covid, we Australians are locked into coastal cruises, but a strong recommendation would be for non Australians looking for the ultimate cruise into the wilds would be to travel from Darwin to Cairns and explore some of the most isolated parts of this world. Regardless of the location of your audience, genuine travellers would enjoy the direct flights from LHR to Australia, whilst US travellers only have a shorter hop to either Melb. or Sydney and enjoy some genuine sunshine before heading to Darwin. Let's face it, not having travelled for close on 16 months, what is stopping the real explorers?
If you make it into St Pete, I highly recommend you do the river cruise from St. Pete to Moscow or fly into Moscow and take the cruise to St. Pete. Awesome cruise and a lot of fun.
@V R Sorry, I can't compare the two, but my friend who went with me said she enjoyed Russia more because of the history we were seeing. She really enjoyed the museums and the ballet.
@V R I'll have to ask my friend if she remembers because I don't. It's been a very long time since I've been back to Russia. When we went, they were first starting their river cruising and the company was very small. They had 3 ships and the ships carried about 100 people each. There were quite a few "bumps" that had to be worked out, but I still had such a wonderful time. It was very interesting and relaxing. It was a 2 week cruise from Moscow to St. Pete. It was called a White Nights Cruise, and I had a wonderful time. The food wasn't so good back then, but we made do. Just had to watch out for the "fish surprise," which could be any of the offered courses and was usually pretty bad. You could smell it before you found it...lol
Hi Gary, Great list - agree with all of your choices. There’s two areas I’d like to hear more about - cruises to East Asia. (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Japan) and Australia. Any input on those areas? - Tony
It's funny to hear you talk so fast on this old video. I like the calmer, more relaxed delivery you have now. I'm not even considering a cruise, just love these well-done videos!
Thank you for another wonderful video about cruising. Our lists vary a bit, my list includes #1 circumnavigation #2 South America #3 Panama Canal #4 Alaska #5 Trans-Atlantic crossing (better from Europe to US) #6 French Polynesia ( on Paul Gauguin) #7 Norwegian Fjords #8 Fall Foliage (Canada-New England) #9 Baltics #10 circumnavigation of the continent of Africa. Our lists differ, that is what makes it fun. Really hard to leave off Australia/New Zealand.
Very informative and interesting video Gary. My wife and I are taking our first cruise in January on Holland America to Panama Canal. Thus, we will be able to take 1 cruise off our bucket list. Glad to hear it made your list as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and recommendations on these ‘bucket list’ cruises. Looking forward to many more after the Panama Canal. Thanks again...Ed
We love your channel! We went on our first cruise recently... SO FUN! We are developing our own cruise and travel channel too, and we own escape rooms, axe throwing and a theatric mystery biz in Branson, Missouri. Keep up the great vids!
You're talking my language here Gary. Most of these are already on my/our bucket list. Our next cruise is Alaska, part of a land and cruise tour package in 2020. The cruise part will be with HAL and does include the Inside Passage and Glacier Bay. We are pretty excited to go finally. We've been to other South Pacific islands (fabulous BTW) and now I think we will think about adding French Polynesia to our list.
Hi Gary, you are the best cruise advisor/advocate of everyone out there. If I bump into you I'll say hello but try not to embarrass either of us. Your videos have been invaluable. Thank you very much. Regards, Gareth, UK
Garry...we are having some trouble getting information about Celestyal Cruises. Can you tell me much about them and the Crystal ship to the Greek islands ?
You mentioned the Baltics, I was lucky to travel with my school in 1968 to Denmark/Sweden/Finland & Russia. We entered the port of St Petersburg then called Leningrad & the majority of ships were grey with the hammer & sickle emblem on. The people were very friendly & spoke excellent English but things were expensive. We took pens & badges to give as gifts which were well received. I’m still honoured I went & thankful for the memory x
My husband and I have done that twice in Queen's Grille. It was wonderful!!! We could afford it because we got this good deal of $1999 each way for Princess Grille and were upgraded. I hope you get to do it soon!
We loved our Norwegian Fjords cruise on the new Holland America Nieuw Statendam. Had one sea day each way from Amsterdam. I would like to go back. Love your videos.
This was our first ocean cruise cruise. We did another ocean cruise and then went to River Cruising. Much more relaxing and we got to see more of the world.
I've done Caribbean (both Eastern and Western) leaving from Florida and New York, Nova Scotia leaving from New York, and Alaska leaving from Anchorage. I'm going on a cruise to the Bahamas in a couple of weeks. Leaving from Bayonne, NJ, which is convenient for me because I live in NJ only a couple of hours away from Bayonne.
yup, done the fjords, part of the Caribbean- Panama, transatlantic from Florida to Portugal and Spain, yes did the Baltics in 2009, next one is Van to Japan via Alaska with a bit of South Korea and Taiwan.....going home via Hawaii.........
Such an ambitious bucket list. I have no idea how I would make such a thing become reality. So as Morrissey one so eloquently said about love peace and harmony oh, I would say about such wonderful cruising dreams: very nice but maybe in the next world.
Working for Princess for several years I feel very blessed to have visited almost all of those places and more. Fond memories and good times, way too much alcohol over those years too
Thanks for your video, learned a lot from it! Can I ask you a question? ➡️ Any of those cruises can you stay overnight for a few days to actually get to KNOW the country? Exemple: Caribbean countries. Thanks
One cruise that don't figure in your list but is worth a look is a cruise on the Nile. I have done that in 2010 and it's the only cruise I have done so I may be biased. I was not on the big ships, but on a Dayahiba, a small sailboat that have only 6 regular cabin and a double luxury one. When I done the cruise, we where only 6 passenger, a couple, two older sister and the daughter of one and finally me who traveled alone. Since the other people had already been in Egypt, I was alone with the guide to do the excursions. Another advantage of a dayahiba is that the bigger ships all pass the nights at pre-ordained ports stacked like sardines, so you look outside your window and you only see another ship, but the dayahiba stopped anywhere along the river so we would wake up with beautifull scenery. I highly recommend that cruise.
As an airline pilot who spends a TON of time in the Caribbean I’m very surprised this would be on a bucket list. I’m not saying that there isn’t stuff worth seeing. But I just don’t see it as being in bucket list territory like your other choices.
Not sure if you have been to Queensland but the best reef day cruises do not meet the port times. Instead you end up going to the busier pontoons or Green Island, which may be fun but isn't as nice experience. Also most cruises stop atleast 2 hours from the Whitsundays so its a lot of time just on the journey for an excursion. I think Queensland is best if you base yourself somewhere like Cairns/Port Douglas or the Bundaberg/Lady Elliot Island - its more bang for the buck. I wouldn't discount a Qld cruise but I would suggest going into it knowing the limitations compared to flying. Imo you get a better cruising experience from other countries.
Never been to Australia. If I do go it will still be a few years down the road. Was looking at Princess and Celebrity which do almost identical cruises from Sydney, traveling to Airlie Beach, Cairns, Port Douglas, Brisbane and end in Sydney. I want to thank you for the valuable tip.
PaulTakeoTravels thanks for being open to suggestions. I looked into a cruise myself and the port times and travel distances didn't make it as worthwhile as just flying. I'm from Brisbane - as much as I love living here it is far from a must do and you may be better off prioritising time elsewhere. If you are after a cruise going through Brisbane then check if there are excursions either to our zoos (we have better then down south where you can go in enclosures to feed kangaroos) or the Gold Coast beaches (about 1-1.5 hour drive). Airlie Beach does have a far amount of travel needed to the Whitsundays - don't do a reef day trip from here as its the worst part of the reef, but consider Whitehaven Beach. Cairns and Port Douglas would be for the reef or rainforest. Port Douglas though has better options outside of the port times (search Wavelength Reef Charters if you are a snokeller). Cairns cruise excursions tend to go to Reef Magic Cruises which can be fairly busy but gives you options like intro dives, snorkel safari, helicopter rides and snuba. That may appeal to you but there are plenty of options that give a more small boat experience from Cairns albeit outside of port times. Dont do Green Island as it gets worst reviews. And dont expect a beach experience in North Qld. I hope this helps, I just recommend weighing up if it is the right choice for you. All the best.
Love this video Garry. I've booked my first cruise to Alaska in 2020 with ideas from your videos. Would you consider doing a more detailed comparison of the 3 main Caribbean routes? I've seen your 5 best 5 worst overall video but would love to hear your thoughts on the actual routes. I have added the Caribbean in 2022 to my plans and would love to do a French Polynesian cruise too.
Love life Cats So wanting to do this cruise! How did it compare to Alaska...and is there anything I need to know before going? (Money exchange, culture preparedness, etc)
Conservatively Yours unfortunately I’ve never been to Alaska but the fjords were beautiful and I would totally recommend ! You got signal until midnight some nights because you are travelling up the fjords ! In the summer it didn’t really get dark so at midnight it felt like 18:00pm and it is quite expensive, 100 kroner was £10. Everyone in Norway was friendly and the views were stunning!!
We are booked to do a transatlantic repositioning cruise on the Royal Clipper - no casino, no cabaret and hopefully none or limited wifi! Have you done any of the Star Clipper cruises?
Another amazing video; thank you, Gary! We are booked on a 7 night Southern Caribbean sailing aboard Celebrity for Jan. 2021, which will complete our tour of the Caribbean (although who can say no to going back). On our list next is a Med. cruise, with our ultimate bucket list sailing being to the French Polynesia.
Thank you for all your great tips! In 2 years we are married 45 years and want to make a special cruise. We do not like warm countries so now we are thinking about 3 cruises. Alaska with HAL and go also on land by train and/or bus. Around England, Scotland and Ireland with HAL or Celebrity. Antarctica with HAL, i know we do not go ashore but due to health problems that is not an isseu. Witch one would you choose?
Great video, thanks for sharing your video with us. Alaska was one of our bucket list cruise, we took Holland America round trip from Seattle up through the inside passage. Great memories!
Hey Gary nice video. I’ve been on 17 cruises all over the world. I would argue Alaska pales in comparison to Norway, I would not recommend Alaska. If you go do not go in September (rainy cloudy & cool). Alaska cannot hold a candle to the fjords of Norway. I took a 2 week cruise all the way up to Honingsvag. Other places that rival Alaska include the southern South America Cape Horn with the largest glacier outside of the Arctic. What you didn’t include which was absolutely amazing was SE Asia, Bali & Phang Nga bay Thailand, WOW! This is a must see! Expensive to fly there but worth every penny. I did a 17 night cruise on Sapphire Princess. Cheers!
@@estrawter9864 I loved the Western! I was at the Mayan Ruins on the first day of Summer! It was amazing to see the sun shine through the top of. the pyramid at Tulum like when Indiana Jones opening the Ark!! Swimming with sting rays was phenomenal! And I am a chicken usually! I took the cruise once with my husband and then when he left me I took my high school aged kids!
I've done two Viking river cruises in the last 8 months and gets expensive going solo so I'm planning an eastern caribbean 4 night cruise in a few months as a solo on Norweigen. The plane ticket to get there and back costs more than the cruise.

Been on the Queen Mary 2 - want you to know there were a number of LBGTQ people on board. All was just fine. Loved seeing many of their ballgown selections during one of the evening formals. Also had wonderful conversation with many while hanging out in the hot tub. Please take this cruise! I can't wait to return.
Baltic cruise is a must. Went there about ten years ago and St. Petersburg has some breathtakingly beautiful places. You can also book a short one day trip to Moscow from there as well...see the Kremlin, St. Basil's and shop in the GUM.
Alaska: Do a Land Tour / Cruise combo. There is so much to see than just the coastline. Spend a week on trains, buses & river boats. Holland America puts together a wonderful vacation.
Thank you for all your tips and information, I think your videos are very good. You mention the Galapagos and Antarctica. Which cruise lines would you recommend for these trips and why please?
Living in Australia, I think New Zealand is more majestic to travel to. I just love Europe and Asia, maybe it’s because I live here but I find Australia a bit boring. I love history so maybe that’s the problem. It’s also very expensive here, you get much better value going overseas. Especially during the pandemic in Victoria, it’s been an absolute nightmare. Each to their own I guess.🥴
As long as they don’t recreate the iceberg. I was also going to make a quip about the classes, but companies like Norwegian have restricted areas like The Haven.

Hey can you share more details about which cruiseline you went with and which destinations you covered for arctic and antarctica?
My transatlantic stopped in Dublin, Belfast, Greenland, Iceland, Halifax and landed in NYC. Great ports plus several at sea days. Perfect combo.
Charlyn Idler what was Belfast like ??
@@sophiestirling8534 Nice. It was a Sunday, so a bit quiet. Went on a bus tour to see some sites.
There is simply no substitute for cruising Glacier Bay/Icy Strait in Alaska. Even approaching it is to enter an unimaginable world of natural beauty.

You must try Asia or Australasia. They are magnificent!
I m with h ou. The only 4 seasons cruise available. Which makes packing a little more challenging but worth it
did this in 2017 so amazing 🥰
Just need to do Alaska, Baltics, transatlantic, Galapagos, two poles, and polynesia....and win the lottery Lol! Another useful video 😁
The more one does the more you want to do I find.........
Gr8 Video. 👍🏼
Doing Norwegian Fjords for my first cruise in August 2022. I really can't wait!
Nice tips!
We recognize you from several of our 147 cruises. Looking forward to meet you again. Hopefully soon! Thanks for another great video!
Hope to see you on board 👍🏻
Cheers!
We did an Alaska cruise for our 30th anniversary. It took us through Glacier Bay and it was absolutely stunning.
Heading to Alaska this September (2019) and CANNOT WAIT!!!!
we are too!!!!!
@@LatinFratGuy1 WOO HOO!!!! ;-)
@Rick O'Shea Just 27 more days!!!!!
Thank for such great useful tips.
In my opinion there is noone else that gives such hands on useful tips regarding cruising.
Thanks for watching ! Great to hear you find the videos helpful :-)
Hi Gary,
Great list - agree with all of your choices.
There’s two areas I’d like to hear more about - cruises to East Asia. (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Japan) and Australia. Any input on those areas?
- Tony
Such a useful video. I think all newbies are confused by cruising so this video is so helpful
It's funny to hear you talk so fast on this old video. I like the calmer, more relaxed delivery you have now. I'm not even considering a cruise, just love these well-done videos!
Surprise that you never mentioned the South Pacific for cruising out of Australia as this area is also a stunning place to visit.
Nice list!!!
Our cruise to Antarctica was out of this world....pristine!
Which cruise did you do? I am looking at a SA cruise that also visites a part of Antarctica, like Elephant Island. Would that be enough?
Very informative and interesting video Gary. My wife and I are taking our first cruise in January on Holland America to Panama Canal. Thus, we will be able to take 1 cruise off our bucket list. Glad to hear it made your list as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and recommendations on these ‘bucket list’ cruises. Looking forward to many more after the Panama Canal. Thanks again...Ed
Thanks so much. Really appreciate you watching! Have a great time doing Panama Canal!!
I love HAL, you will have a great time!!
Queen Mary 2 is first on my cruise bucket list, and hopefully I'll be on her in 2021.
It is a great trip! I am going again in April. Hope you enjoy it too
Loved the video. A number of them-were already on my list but now I have to add a raw more.
Thanks so much. Really appreciate you watching! The list always seem to get longer the more you do, not shorter...
Can you upload more info on specific destinations such as european river cruises, the attractions etc
Hi Gary, you are the best cruise advisor/advocate of everyone out there. If I bump into you I'll say hello but try not to embarrass either of us. Your videos have been invaluable. Thank you very much. Regards, Gareth, UK
😀😀😀 Thanks. Great to hear! Hope get to meet 👍🏻
Garry...we are having some trouble getting information about Celestyal Cruises. Can you tell me much about them and the Crystal ship to the Greek islands ?
What a great list, thank you! Hope to do several in the next few years including Baltic and Antarctica.
Thanks. Those two are definitely great !
Really this is a amazing video for all tourist..
Thanks for reaffirming the Transatlantic on QM2. I'm hoping to do the round trip cruise from NYC as soon as I can. Thanks, Gary!
I really like that ship!
This was our first ocean cruise cruise. We did another ocean cruise and then went to River Cruising. Much more relaxing and we got to see more of the world.
We did the Alaskan and Panama Canal cruises and they were spectacular
Fond memories and good times, way too much alcohol over those years too
Alaskan Inside Passage was top of my bucket list. Now ticked off.
Fabulous trip that one!
Thanks for your video, learned a lot from it!
Can I ask you a question? ➡️ Any of those cruises can you stay overnight for a few days to actually get to KNOW the country? Exemple: Caribbean countries.
Thanks
Woooow,uniq and luxury
How was the drake passage when you travelled to Antarctica Im nervous about travelling through that!
Alaska was sooo pretty but some days it was too windy and the decks were all closed. Like it was difficult to walk
Nile cruise is on my to-do soon list for sure!!
As an airline pilot who spends a TON of time in the Caribbean I’m very surprised this would be on a bucket list. I’m not saying that there isn’t stuff worth seeing. But I just don’t see it as being in bucket list territory like your other choices.
Gary, you are priceless! Thanks!
:-) Thanks !
What do you think of the Norwegian cruise line epic cruise from Barcelona
Great list!!! Thanks! Makes me wonder what my next cruise will be!
My bucket list for cruising is: Greek Islands which we are doing next year, Baltic, Full Panama Canal transit, Western Caribbean. Enjoy your videos.
Hey Gary
Love your videos!
Ordered 6 of the tips for travelers shirts.
It keeps me connected to cruising!
Dave from Canada
Awesome Thanks :-)
Thanks for the great video!! Panama Canal has always interested me!
My 3 bucket list cruises would be Australia (Queensland Coast), Norway Coast (Bergen to North Cape) and a World Cruise.
We combined a trans-Atlantic with the Baltics - 28 days on Holland America. The trip of a lifetime!
I've just been on a 2 week cruise around the Norwegian fjords !!
Cripes mate, it would nice to know when the ports will be again, over the covid
Another amazing video; thank you, Gary! We are booked on a 7 night Southern Caribbean sailing aboard Celebrity for Jan. 2021, which will complete our tour of the Caribbean (although who can say no to going back). On our list next is a Med. cruise, with our ultimate bucket list sailing being to the French Polynesia.
Thanks so much. Really appreciate you watching! Sounds like some great cruises you got lined up then
Thank you for all your great tips!
Had to go to Alaska twice to get all the cities and or glaciers to see because they were not going the same same places and they changed the route ❤😊
Cheers!
I would add Iceland to the list as well.
I’ve got a video about cruising to Iceland coming up in 2 weeks on the channel 😀
I have cruised all three sectors of the Caribbean covering the West, East and South parts.
What did you think? Which was your favorite? This is on my bucket list.
The Southern Caribbean is my favorite of the three it is amazing there
@@estrawter9864 I loved the Western!
@@MelesaEFary sounds fabulous, thanks for sharing!
I've done two Viking river cruises in the last 8 months and gets expensive going solo so I'm planning an eastern caribbean 4 night cruise in a few months as a solo on Norweigen. The plane ticket to get there and back costs more than the cruise.
Norwegian Fjords, Panama Canal and Transatlantic are on my list - French Polynesian Islands also on my list
My mom and mother in law - both widows- did the artic cruises and had a great time.
You never mentioned Canada. Just got back from a 10 day cruise to Nova Scotia. Great time on the Celebrity Summit. Did your first three. Just another superb video. Oh how you love to cruise......
A lot of ports on the New England cruise are boring though. Boston, Bar Harbor and Quebec are really the highlights.
Hawaiian cruise should be on the list. It was beautiful!
love these tips. i wish to travel everywhere one day
My biggest bucket list cruise is a world cruise on the queen mary 2 (queens grill obviously)
Although it’ll have to wait until all the countries the ship goes to won’t lock me up for being gay
I’d also like to do a cruise through Japan
morgan megurine - who’s going to know you’re gay? And, if you wait until everybody’s ‘accepting’, you’ll never get there. To hell with everyone else. You do you!!❤️
Been on the Queen Mary 2 - want you to know there were a number of LBGTQ people on board. All was just fine. Loved seeing many of their ballgown selections during one of the evening formals. Also had wonderful conversation with many while hanging out in the hot tub. Please take this cruise! I can't wait to return.
Avoid Texas then as the knives are out there.
Baltic cruise is a must. Went there about ten years ago and St. Petersburg has some breathtakingly beautiful places. You can also book a short one day trip to Moscow from there as well...see the Kremlin, St. Basil's and shop in the GUM.
Thank you for the useful information.
Thank you, this was super helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Great list... I somehow expected Australia/ New Zealand to make the cut- that is certainly on MY bucket list:-)
Steven Schadle Aus/NZ definitely more interesting than the Caribbean... but more $
Agreed, best cruises we did were here. Even better - New Zealand to Hawaii via French Polynesia!
I was surprised you did not include any type of river cruise
I should have called it ocean bucket list as have done for rivers too!
As long as they don’t recreate the iceberg. I was also going to make a quip about the classes, but companies like Norwegian have restricted areas like The Haven.
