Just watched this masterpiece for the first time and couldn't agree more!!! especially when he was smoking the cigars, reminded me so much of Gary Oldman as Churchill in Darkest Hour, another great film, but this remains one of the greatest of all time!!!
Thanks to Turner Classic Movies, I have become a very serious classic and older film fan. And Charles Laughton, who was previously unknown to me has now solidified himself among the top 3 or 4 of my all time favorite actors! He was a genius and we won't ever see another like him.
Since you're watching the oldies and like Laughton I would strongly suggest 2 films with actors as great as him. A Man for All Seasons starring Paul Scofield and Becket starring Burton and O'Toole, which is on TH-cam.
the classic movies are the best in movie history. Watch Billy Wilder movies and Hitchcock. Billy Wilder will show you everytihing about the human soul and Hitchcok about movie technique. They are geniuses.
In the movie Rembrandt listen to him read from the Bible - it is as though no one had ever read the bible aloud properly before. Or in Ruggles of Red Gap when he recites the Gettysburg Address - he has you in the palm of his hand and every syllable is majestic music.
when the filmed was originally released, there was a card placed in the end titles asking audience members not to reveal the end of the film to those who had not seen it.
Laughton at his best and they don’t come any better than that. I first saw this movie on tv when I was just a kid of around 9 and this scene so impressed me it’s remained in my memory ever since.
Such a wonderful movie! The great Charles Laughton is remarkable. And I love the fact that everything Marlene testifies to in court is actually the truth.
“What’s frightening about Laughton is that he’s the brightest than any actor that has ever lived. His intelligence absolutely bristles in every role and every scene. And he fills it with emotional intensity. How do you compete with that?” - Dustin Hoffman
Marlene Dietrich did some AMAZING acting in this film. Worthy of an Academy Award - 🏆 and certainly due to her for all that she gave the Hollywood Gang And all that she gave up to give it to them🌹
Watch the whole courtroom move as he screams “LIAR!”…..that’s a real moment. They weren’t actors there, they were human beings reacting to a ROAR of real human emotion….Laughton was the GOAT
Back when actors couldn't use profanity to get their point across. Now, it's all F, S, GD....which is the effort of a weak talent to express itself forcefully.
Although Tyrone Power was top billed, Charles Laughton really stole the film. This was one of the best cross examinations of a witness in the film. I get the DVD out two maybe three times a year. Laughton's battering cross examinations made it a great film among other reasons. At 58 he was perfect for the part. Tyrone Power's career went out on top here and sadly his short life ended a little more that a year after filming was completed. His hairline is thinning compared to a few years earlier. He is just 43 here but is beginning to look it.
Yes it was very strange because Power's part is relatively small. Both Laughton and Dietrich had more screen time than him - certainly they both played much more memorable characters. But Hollywood contract negotiations did - and do - have strange outcomes sometimes.
@@kenoliver8913 It's an awesome film. Had Tyrone lived he likely would have soon been edged out from leading man roles and gone to supporting and later elder statesmen roles and maybe television. So sad we never would see those possibilities. I've seen fairly recent pics of Tyrone Jr who's now 64 and that would give an idea of what his father would have looked like had he survived into the 1970s.
I still haven't read the book, which was actually written in the form of a play, but there is something that was not well explained. When the woman offers the letters to Mr. Wilfred (Leonard Vole's lawyer), the letters certainly cannot contain either stamps or a post office postmark, as Christine Vole wrote them very recently, in desperation, all at once. turn! How Agatha Christie resolved this impasse I do not know. Neither Wilfred nor Mayhew mention the lack of postage stamps on the envelopes! Nor did they insist on knowing how this woman (who is actually Christine Vole herself) got the cards! Likewise, back in court, neither the prosecuting attorney nor even the judge noticed this crucial detail about this "evidence."
You're showing your ignorance on several levels. In this movie the witness (Dietrich's character) was much smarter and more capable than any of the men, including Laughton. Without revealing the plot, she did not mind being grilled like this at all.
The best legal drama ever. And a funny movie too. Charles Laughton and Marlene Dietrich were terrific.
It’s a comedy, turn legal drama, turn thriller….
Goddamn, Laughton makes "LIAR!" sound like a true curse. A hell of a performance and movie.
Almost like it's the biggest sin possible
Of all court scenes in all the movies I have ever seen with court scenes, this is my all time favorite.
I firmly believe Charles Laughton would play an amazing Winston Churchill.
Watching the movie for my criminal law class i could not stop thinking about this, he would’ve been magnificent
YES!
A wasted opportunity
I couldn't agree more 👍
Just watched this masterpiece for the first time and couldn't agree more!!! especially when he was smoking the cigars, reminded me so much of Gary Oldman as Churchill in Darkest Hour, another great film, but this remains one of the greatest of all time!!!
"...a chronic and habitual L I A R !" Lord, was Laughton great.
Magnificent!
What a great scene....not sure most of the extras seated in the gallery were expecting his forceful admonition....what great acting is all about...
I read that no one in the gallery knew about how we was going to deliver that last word. So those reactions were definitely authentic!

I think Oldman is approaching this talent level as time goes by.
Since you're watching the oldies and like Laughton I would strongly suggest 2 films with actors as great as him. A Man for All Seasons starring Paul Scofield and Becket starring Burton and O'Toole, which is on TH-cam.
You have good tastes in films. I had satellite TV for six years and recorded about 1300 movies from TCM and still watch many of them now.
the classic movies are the best in movie history. Watch Billy Wilder movies and Hitchcock. Billy Wilder will show you everytihing about the human soul and Hitchcok about movie technique. They are geniuses.
another unassuming actor of quality is Claude Rains who everyone takes for granted.
That delivery oh man. I put him right up there with Scofield & O'Toole.
Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester were amazing....and Oscar nominated!!!
They were husband and wife in real life
The lawyer and the nurse. Played by husband and wife. What a coincidence.
Laughton was such an amazing actor!
He’s also the moon
When I first saw this scene in my early twenties (I believe), I jumped out of my seat upon the word "liar".
In the movie Rembrandt listen to him read from the Bible - it is as though no one had ever read the bible aloud properly before. Or in Ruggles of Red Gap when he recites the Gettysburg Address - he has you in the palm of his hand and every syllable is majestic music.
Best Court Drama .I love it.
One of the all time great actors!
I love you tube for exactly things like this... Laughton was an outstanding actor... the movie is a classic..
Laughton was amazing. The only other guy who can lower and raise his voice as fiercely is Peter O'Toole.
So does Scofield Paul
@@kemwilson2046 yes. I'd say Peter did it a slight bit better but I loves Scofield as well.
@@kemwilson2046 actually the comment below this one has me saying just that a year before this comment. Just saw it.
Charles Laughton is THE MAN...."again, you liiiiieeeed...."
when the filmed was originally released, there was a card placed in the end titles asking audience members not to reveal the end of the film to those who had not seen it.
Paula Ward that’s still included in the closing credits. A voice over
Wish they'd continue that trend.
What a great actor
Laughton at his best and they don’t come any better than that. I first saw this movie on tv when I was just a kid of around 9 and this scene so impressed me it’s remained in my memory ever since.
Charles Laughton is BADASS!
👊🏾
"I'm surprised the testimate did not LEAP from her hands when sworn in!!"
One of the best moments ever captured on film.
This is a Fantastic legal drama! Laughton and Dietrich were amazing! Another Billy Wilder masterpiece!
“Everyone knows the Moon is Charles Laughton…”
"Hiss! You're never around when I need you!!"
Everyone knows the moon is Charles Laughton
he said LIAR so hard he made himself dizzy
An amazing Actor of all time
When he said that, I jumped just like all the people around him did. what a Delivery!
I'm certain the delivery of that last part was only known to Mr. Laughton and Mr. Wilder. The reactions of the extras in the gallery are too genuine.
One of the most amazing pieces of acting. Makes even the great Marlene Dichtric look pedestrian.
Such a wonderful movie! The great Charles Laughton is remarkable. And I love the fact that everything Marlene testifies to in court is actually the truth.
Wait, I just realised this. Ahaahah. I was so caught up in the moment of the last reveal and foorgot all about it. This was such aa masterpiece.
Charles laughton: I do say I shall finish the womans career
A lot of politicians could be characterized as chronic and habitual liars.
I would only watch this movie for Charles Laughton love his voice
Trained as a classic English stage voice, designed so you can understand Shakespeare in the back row of the stalls at the theatre.
“What’s frightening about Laughton is that he’s the brightest than any actor that has ever lived. His intelligence absolutely bristles in every role and every scene. And he fills it with emotional intensity. How do you compete with that?” - Dustin Hoffman
Charles Laughton.legend
The moon came down from orbit to prosecute this case
absolutely brilliant
I hope team Depp is this good on Amber's cross examination!
But that ending ..oh no!🎬 I had forgotten the Tyrone Powers ending!
How did you know HourOfPoop was making a video on the trial?
Trial's over. Depp won.
Now this is a Lawyer
What an incredible cast.
Just heard Daniel Day-Lewis call Laughton the greatest film actor of his generation, or words to that effect, so I thought I would check him out.
Marlene Dietrich did some AMAZING acting in this film.
Worthy of an Academy Award - 🏆
and certainly
due to her
for all that she gave the Hollywood Gang
And all that she gave up
to give it to them🌹
Mr Laughton was one of the greatest actors of our time
It's a more than perfect masterpiece movie till date
We need this guy to roast the hell out of Cornelius Fudge from Harry Potter
one of the greatest actors of all time; Charles Laughton
Charles Laughton is underrated.
From whom? He is widely known as one of the best actors ever.
Cardi B? :D
He was a very famous actor when at the peak of his career, everyone knew of Charles Laughton.
Watch the whole courtroom move as he screams “LIAR!”…..that’s a real moment. They weren’t actors there, they were human beings reacting to a ROAR of real human emotion….Laughton was the GOAT
This is an absolute must see. Much much better than Anatomy of a Murder.
This is an amazing movie!
Laughton was the GOAT.
The nurse was played by Charles Laughton's wife.
Elsa Lanchester is her name
Yea. Mrs Frankenstein
It’s funny too, seeing how much disdain and muffled contempt his character shows her in the first parts of the movie.
This movie is nunber 66 on IMDB all time list, just ahead of The Shining.
The last 20 minutes were brilliant
Excellent acting
I remember watching this movie for my grade 8 english class back in 07 - 08
Wow, that's a really good performance from an old movie!
How do I go about putting Sir Wilfrid on retainer?
A great movie based on a great story.
Laughton was only 57 here - but seemed a lot older.
True, I though he was 80 or something
And Marlene Dietrich was only 2 years younger but could almost pass for his daughter.
The GREAT CHARLES LAUGHTON MY SIR
1:16 That even made me jump. Phenomenal performance.
outstanding !
What about the maid who was "terribly Scottish"
also the nurse played the bride of Frankenstein,
Hourofpoop?
Heard: My dog step on a bee.
Flayman: She's denouncing bees!
Most Definitively.
"That's what I call a 'SWINGIN' party...HEEEEOOOHH!!!!"
Great clip. The incomparable Charles Laughton. I love movie lawyers. Remember Francis L Sullivan Great Expectations. Lawyers are real phychologists.
That will be all, Miss Heard
1:16: OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
Todd Blanche wishes he cross examined Michael Cohen like this.

It’s certainly a very creepy movie, but definitely shows the corruption of the legal profession.
He has a point. Also your not aloud to yell in court dude.
True, but as the judge said, he would give Laughton plenty of latitude, since his client was on trial for his life.
Marlene looks younger than 56
Wow! She was 56 there?

And, I think, every word she said under oath was true.
Yes it was, but she actually wanted the jury to believe it was untrue. Don't underestimate Dietrich's acting performance here.
Would love to see him grill The Orange One.
Better yet, both Joe and Hunter Biden.
Yea, wouldn't that be great. Psaki Psucks and she's a born ... LIAR!!!
Great comment 👍 thank you! And now 2 years later, it would be even more fun.
1:16 LIAR!!!
1:13
Kinda reminds me of Mata Hari
1:32. Let her take it like a man. Equal rights. Can’t they do this with Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris, etc.?
And your comment contributes to this scene...how?
What did these people do to be called liars? Do, please, give examples of their crimes.
