Foley Belsaw Sawmill Powered By Ford 8N Tractor

- They said it could not be done but my Ford 8N is powering the Foley Belsaw circular sawmill.
I purchased this sawmill months ago actually. Since then I have been reading online to find out what is the best way to power it. Some people use a dedicated diesel engine while others use newer model tractors with high HP. But I have not been able to find a single article or video where someone has used an old Ford N series tractor to power a Foley Belsaw.
My mill is very much like the M14 of the 1970s which can be powered by a minimum of 26 HP according to the owners manual. My mill was sold under the Sears Roebuck name and made by Foley Belsaw around 1936. Back then most tractors were way less powerful than the machines we have today.
So I bought a Ford 8N and gave it a shot. I am very pleased that this tractor is powering my mill with no problem.
I am learning and experimenting with this mill since I only just set it up. I am learning how the variable speed feed control works. You can actually vary the feed rate by the pressure on the lever. This helps a lot when you hit a knot or cut through thicker wood.
So here it is, the first video I know about where a Ford N series tractor is powering a Foley Belsaw.

Looking at this video after a couple years. The tractor governor was not working right so the sawmill bogged into a cut causing the blade to cut crooked sometimes. And it feeds so much faster and better with a working governor of course.

Thanks. Right now we are hauling in a ton of fire wood and logs for the mill. When that slows down we will be running the mill a lot.

I can’t find a pto drive to fit the 1.75 round bore. Where did you find one to fit the saw arbor? Help please
Go to a local tractor shop or check 2nd hand tractor and farm equipment stores.

Not sure how I can help? The saw came with a PTO drive shaft which I connected to the tractor.
Your flitch will bend and bow as you release tension as it is being cut with your saw dust a chain and paddles will constantly remove the dust from the mill
When you build your cage.. I'm going to use a scoop shovel like a feed scoop shovel which is recommended.. you need some boards on the dirt ground so that the shovel can slide period and it probably could use a backboard at the end of the run of the slide. I wouldn't allow the dust to go too far underneath the machine.
That's a great saw mill. That'll make you some money once you get it all figured out. Cool thing is some of those first cut-off's while you were squaring the log could probably get cut down into smaller dimensional lumber for small projects too. Nice work.
Once you get the hang of it you could always mill rough cut lumber to sell on the side for extra income. A lot of people would use rough cut lumber if they could get their hands on it. We have a mill about 12 miles from where I live that does customer milling and all rough cut he doesn't do much dimensionally planed lumber at all, people go to him for the rough cut stuff so that's most of his sales.
That big spinning blade needs a guard!

Had a Belsaw mill in the early 70's, ran it with a 3phase 25hp electric motor. Great little mill.

I do not know why they quit making tractor powered sawmills. I know band sawmills are popular but if you already have a tractor then it is one less motor to maintain.

Hi Troy and Chris,, Nice going,,Keep That Blade Sharp..Sand it Down,Paint it with Clear Spray..When That Blade is Sharp its less Strain on Cutting,,,And Put Guards up...They use these at the Big Fairs Still..Only With a Big Wide Belt Feed,,,They Grind Corn To,,Make Corn Meal,,Sell it right There...I love Watching These Cut That Wood..Make it Like New Troy,,Thats the way you want it...Good Shape..Thats a Money Maker....Lumber is High,Very High....Ok Troy,,As you Were..Tell Chris To Keep His Eyes Open...I got a Big Tree down Now..Enjoy

MAnnnnnnnnnnnnnn that is beautiful to watch. and to think, that saw is a year older than me and has been used less in the last 50 years than I've been used, HAhahahahahahahahahahaha! But I'm still sharp!!!!
You're going to get some beautiful lumber out of this mill. I can see you milling Timber Beams and Floor Joists to spec, being one of the things you could specialize in as there is most likely a market for it, but most mills are set in cranking out amounts of lumber as opposed to spec timber beams and lumber, so its a niche market you might be able to tap.
A byproduct you have now that can also be valuable is all the sawdust. You could probably strike a deal with the Amish to trade the sawdust for topsoil. The sawdust can be turned into topsoil, so it's a win win for them and you.
This mill and all of the equipment you've recently gotten are a small gold mine that could turn out to be a very good income in both the short term and in the long run.

The sawdust looks pretty normal to me -- it is rip cutting -- it will not produce wood chips like a chainsaw -- the speed of the cut will let you know when it is getting dull -- considering your powering it with the ford's pto -- it actually looks like the speed is pretty good. Obviously for any and all cutting knots are hard and slower. Overall looking very good.

If Chris laughes at his stride then it should be fine with every body else. Need a plexiglass shield between you and the blade to keep the dust out of your shorts.You will get the hang of it in about (quoting from a old John Ford film) "ten or twelve years" lol.

Good work! There are internal stresses in some logs, so you can get movements during the sawing that give different thicknesses along the board.
WE ARE VERY INTERESTED IN SEEING HOW LONG IT TAKES YOU TO GET THAT BLADE TO SHINE WITH ABSOLUTELY NO RUST.. do show in your videography..
It is possible to sharpen each tooth of the blade. I think it is time to do that so it dont bog down. I saw the guy on mountain men do that. Its a common problem with saw mills like that. After you sharpen it it will cut like butter. The guy on mountain men even replaced missing teeth on the blade.

That's how ya make money in Michigan north country. Either own a sawmill, or be a bean grower for Del Monte.
Figure out a way to save the sawdust, trap flat pan something that will make "harvesting" the sawdust easier
