I had a similar experience 20 years ago, in the woods a mile or so from my home. I live in north Norway. I was looking for cloudberries, and I walked up a little valley to some big rocks, where I sat down to take a break and enjoy my food and coffee. The wind was rustling in the treetops, and after a while a could hear a baby crying, loud and clear. Downhills there was a little cabin, where a family I knew used to spend weekends, and at first I thought it was their toddler crying. But, something seemed off, and I suddenly knew what it was: It wasn't a toddler crying, but more like a newborn, and the sound was coming from up the mountain, and not from the cabin below me. As soon as I realized that, I got a really creepy feeling, and it felt like the air was freezing, my teeth clattered from the cold, even if it was late summer to early fall, and sunny. Even with the wind, it shouldn't feel that freezing cold. I packed my things and hurried off. I knew for a fact that there could be no baby up in the hills.
That's interesting... Here in the US there are tons of people who are experienced outdoorsmen, but end up missing or are found in bizarre locations, dead. David Paulides' Can Am Project, and Missing 411 delve into these cases, of which there are many in our National Parks and Forests. Anyway, there are accounts of exactly what you're describing: a person is lured somewhere by a baby, or whimpering, etc but notice the birds are silent, and there is a strange, unnerving atmosphere all of sudden and think better of it. Maybe your instincts saved you whereas others had walked just a bit too close. I have no idea what this phenomenon is, but I'm glad you listened to your gut and made it out of there. Look up that guy's channels. Also a guy named Rusty West is good, but not nearly as detailed as Paulides.

It's VERY important to listen to your 6th sense! (Even police officers are taught this in boot camp now.) She also had the textbook, paranormal feeling of being freezing cold (in mid-summer, when it would otherwise be impossible). If it were me, I'd have started walking toward it (instinctually) but if the feeling persisted (which I bet, in this case, it would have increased) I'd have gotten the hell out of there fast, and called the cops when I got home.

I’m in shock right now. I have hiked the Appalachian hiking trails for years, and the only time I came across something strange was when I found a woman hunched over and resting her head on a tree. She wasn’t using her arms, just setting her head on the tree. When I called out to her, she ran into the forest. This was maybe 3 months ago. I wonder if it was the same lady?

I spent time homeless living in a car at country truck stops there was a few occasions when it got scary at night. so Nice to have the safety of home. One time my Australian cattle Dog was with me in the car for around 3 months felt safer he'd bark when someone came near at night , If you Get a Dog that will help you feel safer.

Appalachian trail always has weird shit going on.
I was in boyscouts and several of the scoutmasters hiked it at some point in their life. Two stories that stood out was one of them came across a several week old suicide just off the trail, the other woke up inside his tent with him and all his stuff neatly relocated in a ravine about 50 meters from the trail.

That first story reminded me of the clown epidemic that occurred in late 2016. One early November morning, I was heading out for my classes. It was still pretty dark outside, so I was a bit frightened to walk outside alone. It may seem childish, but I went to grab a huge butcher knife from the kitchen, then laid my stuff down. I checked around the porch, everyone's vehicles, and the side of the house. Thankfully, no clowns were hiding out. That had to have been one of the scariest experiences in my life. The clowns had been popping up around my hometown, so for the remainder of that semester, it was a struggle to get to my car every morning. After that, I started carrying a taser with me, thankfully I never had to use it. Because of that experience, I am now afraid of clowns!
P.S. I didn't watch the second story until after I posted this comment, totally ironic. Lol

Right?!! I can hear it now: "It was the last day of school. I had gone to the bathroom & returned to my classroom. I see, lying on my desk, a long object. Looking closer, I see its a pencil. But not only was it not there before, but the tip was so long....it looked like a demon's fingernail. I look around to see who might have put it there......*loud noise*!
