As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.

My dog used to be very food driven. Now, he still likes food, but since he learned how to fetch, as you said, it's become addicting! He goes crazy for the ball. It's my strongest currency now. I could literally play fetch with him while dogs run around and he couldn't care less about them.

It isn’t wrong. You can’t always train a dog with a “positive only” way. They NEED structure and good balanced training. The longer they allow the reactivity and frustration to build the worst it’ll become. The dog could possible take the frustration out on whoever his holding the leash or get over stimulated by a dog and lash out. Different things work for different dogs.

Puppies are mouthy so just train your pup as much as you can so he/she is less scary to your family member. Education is key (if they know nipping is normal part of puppy behavior they’re less likely to think they’re being attacked).
Of course this is getting more into human psychology lol
I’d look up how to help people get over phobias on TH-cam as well!

    I have a question:
We adopted a ten year old dog from another family member 3 months ago and i think we are off to a good start (bonding and training). But when we play fetch, he looses interest too quickly, so we started to reward him with a treat, if he brings back the ball, drops it, sits down and makes eye contact. But i am still wondering, if "it´s ok" to treat him for playing, which - as i see in your videos - should itself be a reward or do you think it´s ok to motivate our dog with food to play fetch, so we can drain his energy?
I would love to hear your input! I am gratefull for your awesome content on youtube, it helps a lot!

I'm trying to start clicker training with my friend's 3 year old husky, she tends to snatch the treat out of my hand. I'm trying to brainstorm how to get her out of that. Maybe hold off on the clicker, have a less high currency treat that I'm using, and get her to slowly eat from my hand and reward with "yes!"? Any thoughts on how you'd approach it, or a video of yours that you can refer me to? Thanks Zak!

Jrrheels 09 try using negative punishment (taking AWAY the good thing) when she snatches. And yes practice w a lower value treat. Any time I have a dog like that I pull the treat away and say GENTLE softly and Carley give them the treat again. Soon they learn that behavior doesn’t get them the treat. Hope that helps!

    • @annelikaikkonen7175
      @annelikaikkonen7175 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Never give her treat when she's trying to snatch it. You can practice being gentle in a separate training session by placing a treat on front of her in your fist and let her nibble it but not to get it. Wait like that until she stops biting and is gentle (trying to lick the treat) and reward by giving the treat. I think Zak even discussed about this in one of his puppy training series episode.

My Nahla was so good I never needed a leash. "Time to get rinsed off." After working her with fetch, she would get filthy. Hose her off down her chest and legs and along her belly. "Turn around" and hose off the back of her legs, "pick'em up" and do her feet. Let her drink from the hose, "Back inside" and dry her off. It was if I gave her a bath every day... Fuzzy puppy. Forget trying to wipe mud off a dog.
Heart wrenching I had to bury her last week. She just knew what I wanted and did it exceeding well. That's a purebred border collie for you.

6:30 so what about service dog training where we have to teach them to heel the whole time we are walking in a store or airport or hospital. I would love if you could talk about service dog training in anyway and the differences in healthy expectations for the dog while getting our human medical needs met.

Lol when you said "honestly it was pretty hard to get her attention just then" that's just the norm with my pup. 😂😂 What would you have done if Inertia didn't leave the bone on the ground alone and just went for it and ignored your "leave it" command? That's what my pup does even though she clearly knows the command. I know the long term is to ramp up the leave it training but just wondering in the moment do you take the bone away by force so as to not reinforce or do you just give up and let her play with it?

About the leash biting... would you ever use bitter apple spray to discourage it? I'm guessing that you'd rather teach her to voluntarily not bite any leash, rather than just a leash that tastes bad... but curious what your thoughts are on that.

What would you have done in a situation where she would pick up the bone? My puppy will pick up almost everything and be extremely reluctant to drop it, sometimes growling and acting out if I'm taking it from him. In certain situation for his safety I've had to force it from him, otherwise we can sit for a really long time waiting for him to give in. It's never a very nice experience, I'm trying all I can with drop it training, where his really improving, but some things he we just not let go of, at all...

i have a blue heeler puppy who is about the same age as Inertia in this video and I have hard time discerning how much play is too much! I can't tell sometimes if she's cranky from having TOO much play/training or not enough. Does anyone have any feed back on this?

Hi zak sorry I know this comment isn't related to this video but I am trying to socialize my 4 month sable GSD X lab he is scared of other dogs he was bitten on the ear at 3 months and now he try's but my aunts rottweiler tries to play with him and he runs and ducks (not in a playing way) letting out yelps. We have been slowly trying to ease him into it by going for walks together but not sure if its helping or making it worse please help.

I am moving into my own home soon, with the intention to get a dog once settled in. My partner and me both love dogs and they keep me active and less stressed. He says we should wait a year or half a year but everytime I watch your videos I spend like 10min looking at adoption websites. 😂

Izzy Lova exercise him a bunch before work. Even If you have to wake up an hour or two early! Play fetch, run with him, work on his basic obedience, do puzzle games, things to get him tired. Give him a good bone or a kong full of soft/wet dog food (freeze it over night) to keep him busy while you’re away. If he’s in a crate then lock him in and reward him. Don’t get overly excited just say “good.”, you don’t want him to be excited in his crate so just say it calmly and reward with food. Take a few steps away and reward him for being quiet. Do this until you can go out of the room for a few seconds and come back without him making a sound. You can extend the time as he gets better and better at it.
