  • Brisbane Airport changed its name to Meeanjin, its Indigenous name, on the departures board, causing confusion for travellers, says Sky News host Liz Storer.
“Can you imagine how completely and utterly confusing this is,” she said.
“This is a place people go to know where they’re going.”

Brisbane is the name of the city and Queensland is the name of the land it sits on. Why are these aboriginal names written in the english language and not in aboriginal language? There is no written aboriginal language, only a spoken language that can be made up or changed at any time. What contribution did aboriginal people make in the establishment of the city and what gives them rights over the name of the city? Can anyone produce an aboriginal map detailing the names and boundaries to all these pieces of land?

Aborigines were simply the mammals that walked on 2 legs here in Oz. They foraged , hunted , lived and died where they fell from the mother's womb...they had no idea where on earth they were and very few knew whether there were other mammals like them anywhere else on the rock on which they stood. They lived from day to day , season to season . No written language , no nationhood , no architecture , just simply existing as best they could . Modern Australians are crediting the Aborigine with a lot more than was actual fact.

If the airlines want to display traditional names airports then they should also only have traditional names in their flight search tools. Then we could sit back and watch their sales plummet.

Imagine how upset the aboriginal elders must have been when their airport from the dreamtime got renamed to Brisbane. Just look at all the rock art depicting aircraft? Was there even a structure or building of any kind before the white settlers got to what they called Brisbane?
