  • Aquatics expert Tom Sarac provides an in-depth overview of a very useful genus of fish - Otocinclus! A great addition to planted aquariums, these tireless algae eaters are employed by most of the world's top aquascapers to help combat algae growth in their aquariums. A somewhat more delicate species, Otocinclus do best in mature aquariums and in large groups of their own kind. Avoid large, boisterous tankmates, and be sure to offer them a varied diet of fresh vegetables and dried fish foods with lots of plant content.

    We have a pair of Otocinculus for almost 2 years. They have now bred and we have about 11 babies. It is amazing to see them grow. They are in a 9 gallon Fluval Flex aquarium. They love fresh zucchini.

      Did you do anything special to get them to breed? How easy is it to keep babies alive?

    • @stevenorris8986

      @@oemed010 Mix of fresh vegetables and clean water. We get about 2 or 3 that stay alive each time they produce. The babies seem to like powdered algae wafers.

      I have around fifteen in my 30 gallon together with the same amount of small corydora habrosus and let me tell you, they are not shy at all in those numbers. They swim around out in the open, both species together playing around all day. Yours are shy because of the small number.

      Funny enough when I first started setting up all my aquascaped aquariums, I ordered a diverse group of “cleaners” for the eco system. Oto cats, Horned nerite snails and cherry Shrimp. When they all started to arrive via the mail, my mom was like “sucker fish, snails and shrimp?” They all seem kinda boring, fast forward 3 years and they’re all her favorites in the tank 😂 Especially the Oto cats. The one never grew and it’s the tiniest adult oto I’d ever seen and my mom gets excited just seeing this little guy buzz out from under his driftwood to get food 😂

    Although I've had Otto's for years. I enjoy watching videos on all my fish, plants and tanks over and over. I know anyone that has Otto's will say I'm doing everything wrong. But as they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I have a tall 70 gal. tank that I'm putting Otto's in. A heavy community tank. Everything gets along fine. My fish store rarely has them. And when they do, they go fast. I'm hoping to end up with at least 25 Otto's in the tank. The first five did great and plumped out real quick. I buy all they have each time, usually 5 or so left. The next bunch I bought, like the first ones are super skinny and not attractive. With all the Veggies, Algae and pellets they all seem happy. What's happy? Well similar to my Black Kuhli Loaches, they swim all over and at times they group together and swim along the glass in what I call, Cart-wheels. They feed often and then do Cart-wheels again. To me, that's a good sign of being Happy. Plus, they are not shy at all. Constantly on the front glass and all over the plants and wood. I place smooth rocks in water basins outside. As Algae grows on the rocks, I move them to my tanks and place the old rocks back outside in rotation. I'm really hoping I can get these guys to breed.

    One otos with 2 cories, 1 pleco , 1 betta , with one guppy, with one molly, one Kulo loach . In 7 gallon tank.. they are doing well... Whats the issue now? I dont see scooling needed

  • @pecosR0B
    @pecosR0B 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wanted to use Otos for my algae clean up in my new 40 gallon breeder I've got cycled after about 2-3 weeks (with sponge/plants/etc that had bacteria from another tank to speed it up). How many Otos should I get for my tank? I picked up 4 today and originally was going to get some Kuhli loaches as well but they need sand and I have gravel... I was planning on getting 12-18 rummy nose tetras as the main fish and one of my bettas as a centerpiece (he's pretty chill compared to another betta I have).

    • @fluval
      @fluval  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We recommend starting with the 4 you have and seeing how they do! You can always supplement their diet if there's not enough algae for them, but it's best to stock the tank incrementally. 👍

    • @pecosR0B
      @pecosR0B 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fluval def stocking a few at a time because I don't want to overload the tank! Thanks for the reply! I'll probably add maybe 2 more in the future and also have some Corys for bottom feeding before I finally get to add some Rummy Nose tetras!

    If you get these, remember to feed them regularly! Its very very important because they starve to death very easy because people think they are just a "cleaner fish" or whatever. No, they need food just like any other fish.

    Hello,
    I have a weird situation going on in my 450L aquarium. I have 10 Otocinclus in the tank and they were super active, schooling in the tank and cleaning the glass etc. But because I had pest snails I introduced 6 small Yoyo Loaches to the tank 1 week ago. But now Otos are hiding all the time and they are kinda afraid from me, so, their behaviour is completely changed. What should I do in this situation?
    Thanks for the answers.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there! We recommend just waiting a bit - it's normal for shy species like Otocinclus to react this way when active, boisterous fish like Loaches are added to an aquarium. Give them a few weeks to get used to them and they should start coming out more!

    They don't eat plants. Just the biofilm and algae growing on it.
    I have an oto tank. You need to replicate their specific, natural habitat. Nobody should get an oto until they learn everything about them. Mine have started breeding.
