“ONE PIECE style Non-Dripping Sauce Pot” Throwing on Potter’s Wheel

- One of the challenges when I make pots for liquid is "dripping".
I’ve tried various styles to achieve good results.
So far all of them involve the spout.
But this one is different.
I use liquid surface tension to resolve the dripping issue.

In the beginning I was using standard method to make the lid separately. I always felt awkward in the shape. The lid and the pot don’t belong each other. Then I found this technique. This technique changed my approach to making pots completely. I’m so glad I can share my sensation with fellow potters🥰

thank you for this! i too have been making covered sauce jars which have included a small spout on the delicate rim, something like yours. these didn't work out consistently as it's a challenge to make a spout with that delicacy when the clay is grogged and not very elastic. next, i went to a tiny thrown and attached spout, where a hole was included in the top with which one can regulate the liquid flow. yours are beautiful, simple and very functional. you remind me of what can be done in the throwing process that reduces trimming and finishing.

Thank you 😊. Same system Glass sauce Pot is quite common in Japan. I wasn’t sure if it works with stoneware clay as the tightness is less than glass pot. It works very well. Now this is going to be my usual line up.

@@AlchemyCeramic i threw several of these last week, and it's been such fun to see it come together! question for you about this technique - do you let the lids dry outside of the bottles? one of mine cracked because the neck dried and shrunk faster than the lid. i'm worried about making the fit too snug and risking cracking or the lid just getting stuck. wondering how you manage this? thanks!

The reason for cracking is may be due to the bottle neck thickness is thinner than lid wall so bottle shrunk
faster than the lid. Please try two things, the first you can trim the inside of the lid to make the thickness to match the bottle neck. The second one is to cover with plastic sheet lightly. Trying to slow down the drying speed especially in this weather. My studio is cool so drying speed is slow. I hope These can resolve the problem. I usually make them tight fit as I don’t like loose fit which seems to be not well made. Please try my suggestions and if you still have problems please let me know we can think together.

Cool it doesn't drip at all, so clever! I love your one piece series. Recently I was inspired to make a lidded salt shaker with your method. I made it like your spice shaker jar, but I cut the lid at the top of the part that you push in with the chopstick that becomes the flange. When trimming the base of the pot, I made a footring and I cut out a circle inside the footring from the base and score and slip to re-attach it covering the flange. My jar was slightly cone shaped inwards so the base is wider than the top so that the size is ok (Actually I am not skilled enough to make it with the inset lid like your previous video with snow on the moon glaze, but I think this would look better). Then I made holes in the attached circle for the salt. I will fill the jar with salt at the base and put a cork in the hole in the base. I hope that makes sense! Thank you for the inspiration :)

Thank you for watching. Some glazes are my recipes and some aren’t. I will post with recipe when I use only my glaze next time. My firing schedule is nothing special. I have L&L kiln. Most of the time I use slow glaze cone 6 and 60 minutes holding time at the top temperature. In this way even cone. setting the atmospheric temperature in the kiln becomes higher. It reaches cone 7 to 8 easily . I have slow cooling schedule but I only use specific glaze.

The size is 5cm x 1.5cm. I recommend to use hard wood which has finer grains. After you sand it the surface becomes very smooth and doesn’t drag the clay much.

This tiny air vent hole was closed when I trim the bottle in leather hard stage. The trimming pressure is enough to close this hole.

Thank you for watching 😊. Yes I fired the lid on. In this way I can expect perfect fit. If you worried not glazing the liquid contact parts, you can glaze joints parts and fire separately. But you need to consider the glaze thickness. You can glaze and wipe the glaze lightly then fire separately, is another way you can choose. I always like to fire lid and the pot together so I choose non-glazing joint part.

The last bit which you showed how sauce was poured definitely convinced me this non-drip bottle did the great job! Amazingly good piece! 👍Btw, I did couple of those shallowing cookie jars with lids. But the lids warped. They were not flat as they should be at bisque firing. I can only think that 1240 degrees had caused that or compression had not been done well during throwing stage...What do you think? Thank you

About shallow jar. Please try to make a lid thicker and foot ring thicker and taller. You can also add extra ring which is between the lid foot ring and centre. It will help to stop warping.

If you are asking suitably for the hygiene point of view the answer is up to you.
Many potter use cracking glaze as feature specially in Japan.
Mattcha tea bowl particularly, people enjoy the tea bowl changes the colour by usage. We call it “ The tea bowl grows up “
By the way inside of the pot is glazed. Only the overlap part is unglazed because I want to fire them together.
very informative, great video! one question, I noticed the surface that pours the sauce is not glazed, is that okay?
Thank you for your question😊 I thought someone might ask this question. This is unglazed part is waxed so it is more protected compared to the part no glaze and no wax part. It is more shiny. You can also use fine clay to cover the issue you worried. Japanese pottery “Bizen Yaki” is one of my favorite style. It is very traditional pottery in Okayama prefecture. They don’t use glaze. They have long firing system (7-9 days I was told 😳) Their local clay is fine clay. Those pots are beautiful and functional. The key is long firing. If you can, better to use slow long firing program to make clay’s porous tighter. If I am not answering well please ask me again with more details.

They open Tuesday to Friday after 5pm. Saturday 11am to 10pm and Sunday 11am to 4pm. This non dripping pots are only 2 left at the moment. I hope I can top up some time soon.

Thank you for your comment David😊. I’m just in the meddle of the process. If it works I will post it as video soon. There were few points I needed to adjust and these points are interesting. The liquid density is different so that is another question part. This is too small for the oil bottle so I need adjustments but if you are happy with the size paltry this , but make the channels bigger otherwise the oil doesn’t flow.

Hi Ana😊. Among “ ONE PIECE “ series this is the most advanced one. Did you try Flash Lid ONE PIECE? Pleas try that first. After that Small Lid ONE PIECE. When you are comfortable with those two this project is fun. I found small ONE PIECE is actually difficult to throw. Maybe you can increase the size.

Very interesting question. I wonder why do you think it could be two different person. I’m making this video only by myself. I’m the potter and also the narrator and the editor. If I’m going to hire the narrator I will choose much better English speaker🤣.

Hi😊 The restaurant website doesn’t have much pictures because pots sell very quickly and I can’t catch up the speed to upload new photos 😅. Instagram is bit better, but again I’m too slow to upload new works. I spend time to make TH-cam videos. Zen Mondo is the name of the restaurant, 326 Upper street N1 2XQ. It has full of my works, this non-dripping sauce pots are only 2 left at the moment. The restaurant open Tuesday to Friday From 5pm to 10pm. Saturday 11am to 10pm, Sunday 11am to 4pm.
