  • I recently had a job come in where I needed to bend some 2mm sheet steel. Now I don't have a press brake that would do that so I went on the search for one.
    This video is about the one I found on eBay, the Cyclops press brake.
    I believe they are made in low volumes, but none the less the one I received seems very well made. It had a few issues in my mind and I point these out in the video. Take a look!
    Some of the spec on the Press Brake that I bought from Ebay:
    Made in Sheffield, England
    Heavy duty construction 15mm beam/base, webbed based for extra rigidity
    Adjustable V plates to allow for thicker material and adjusting the bend radius min width 10mm max approx 35mm
    Heat treated C45/EN8 15mm x 60mm- Multiple fingers, widths 150mm, 100mm, 75mm, 50mm & 25mm
    Adjustable back stops, up to 75mm, fully removable to allow clear access
    400mm max bend width- Max thickness at 400mm, 4mm
    Runs on linear bearings with spring return- 25mm dia guide bars
    Overall width 520mm- weight 35kg
    Some tools included
    There are 2 other sizes available. The seller has a video on the Press that I have included below:

    I've just collected one of these from Tom. He makes them in his very well equipped workshop. They are almost made to order, which doesn't take more than a week, if he hasn't got your required size in stock. He seems very busy. The guide rods are now hardened steel so that solves the bearing problem. You are getting a fair old chunk of tool for your money. There were a couple of machined edges that felt sharp to the touch, but were smoothed out in seconds with some scotch bright, so not really burrs. Tom seems like a sound lad who will go out of his way to support you if you have any issues. I'm very happy with my purchase. I bought the 610mm version and collected it from him.

      Hi Mark and thanks for the comments. I did have a few teething problem that I sorted out and I'm really pleased the guide rods are now hardened, thats going to help a lot. I agree the unit is very, very heavy and well built and I'm really enjoying using mine, I think it will last an age. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

    Hi Mike. Good video mate. I just ordered one of the 300mm brakes from Cyclops, so we'll see if they've improved the QA (or I have better luck). I'll pop the caps off and check the rods before use just in case, so thanks for showing that gotcha.

      Hi Nicodema. Yes hopefully you won’t have any issues. Once I sorted mine out its been fine. Let me know if you get any problems. Thanks for the feedback and of course for watching 👍🏽

      @@MikeMakesIt The press brake arrived this afternoon and on the whole it's a good piece of kit. They've used smooth sided cap heads which avoids the binding problem you had. However they're still suffering from the balls of the linear bearings doing a number on the rails. By the looks of it it's during transport. I guess if the rails were case hardened it would avoid the damage, or even just ship them not assembled. I've stoned them and they run just fine now. I will raise it with Cyclops, as I suspect they may not even know it's a regular problem. It would be easily avoided.

    Nice video Mike! 😊
    The quality is so disappointing, I would send it back to them... If you buy used, you could expect some kind of issues with, but it was brand new, so this quality is totally unacceptable in my book... And it was not £10.00... Obviously there was no quality check at all. ☹️😢

      Hi, yes it was a tad disappointing and should have been good to go but the niggles were soon over come and now it seems a fine unit. Thanks for your concerns and for watching 👍🏽

    Mike for the price you should expect it to be ready to go rather than you having to fettle ,I know you are capable of that fettling but some folks would be sending it back needlessly all for the sake of a bit of quality control end of rant 😂
    Mike it looks a nice piece of kit ideal for a small shop
    On the hydraulics of the press we had a little box foot operated which was Air over Hydraulic air line in press hydraulic pressure out
    These little boxes can be found from fire brigade surplus stockists if I remember these where made by Blackhawk hydraulics and where used to power rescue rams for releasing trapped folks from cars railings etc just a thought stay safe top-lad 👍👨🏻‍🏭

    Recommend you provide some feedback n your findings to the supplier / manufacturer (unless they are already aware). There’s no excuse for some of the issues you found, especially from a UK supplier.

    Hi fellow maker. The one thing that I am not happy with in the build of their break is the linear bearings. A pair of bronze bushes would spread the lateral load around the guide rod. he other traditional win with bronze (or brass) is the self lubricating nature of the material. Do I need to extoll the drawbacks of linear bearings in heavy loading scenarios? Not immediate , the problems occur after time, being used dirty & the tracks in the rod from being rolled along the same path. Otherwise fine and while fresh from the box not bad. I am going to take a look at it before I consider making one.

    • @MikeMakesIt
      @MikeMakesIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jack, thanks for the comments. There is certainly room for improvement. I like the idea of the bronze bush/bearing. I don't think the shafts the bearing ride on are hardened although I've not confirmed that. I received a comment that the damage to the shafts occur in shipping which could well be the case as other people have had the same problem as I. At the moment the press is running trouble free but time will tell, thanks for watching, much appreciated 👍🏽

      @MikeMakesIt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Segoman, thanks for the comments. I saw no point in going clever on the back end, as you say KISS. If I start using it more a DRO would give repeatable results on the ram for sure. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

    A bit worrying as they are living off the Made in Sheffield, synonymous to quality. But a least I can have what you have put together without the big cost of a hydraulic press brake.

    It's a finger brake. Why did you not make the first bend on the press rather than on your vise? Gooseneck and Hemming dies are made specifically for the bend you are performing.

    • @MikeMakesIt
      @MikeMakesIt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Metallic Sawdust and thanks for taking the time to comment. I've always known this type of metal bender in the UK as a press brake so I learnt something new today. Unfortunately the only way I could bend the first part of the plate was in the vice as all I had is what you can see in the video; no dies. I did try a few ideas off camera but they were unsuccessful, hence the vice. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

      I guess it’s understandable that having just taken delivery, you might not be fully understanding the function of a finger press break.
      They are made just specifically to perform that fold for the handle while keeping the rest of the plate flat each side of the handle.
      You remove the fingers that protrude past each side of the handle tab that you wish to fold.
      Then you position the remaining fingers so that they only contact the area of the handle to be bent.
      Then you use the press to bend the handle beyond 90 degrees, so in essence what you were doing in your vice.
      As others have said, you can buy fingers that again are designed to then complete the bend, in the same manner to flat to act as a handle.
      It seems somewhat silly to buy a machine specifically engineered to do this, then ignore using it and start manually belting it in a vice with a hammer & Dolly.
      I’ll see if I can find you a link of someone doing just this.
      From memory it’s a “swag off-road” finger brake, that sells the extra fingers needed to achieve this.
      You ought be able to use them with this break.👍
      Here take a look at this video to see how you COULD have done it.

      @@MikeMakesIt Great video; I suggest looking up Ratha Sochenda on YT for an awesome power hydraulic setup. I do CNC plasma cutting, so a tip is, you need to make a bottom die which is only the width of the flap for the handle, which can be done by plasma or waterjet cutting out say 13 mm plate with bolt holes to hold the segments together to make one solid bottom die; then the sides of the 'handle' are not bent. Here is what I am talking about in concept: th-cam.com/video/XWHSYlo9ZuU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=JgmKqECNeT0k_-bh&t=875

    Why aren’t you reorienting the bed knives of the press brake to bend the handle first? That’s the whole point of a break with fingers.

    • @MikeMakesIt
      @MikeMakesIt  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I tried different ways but it always tried to bend the whole sheet. I’m told there are different fingers that would have helped. Always learning though.
