20:30 I never saw Gene's microphone fall apart like that before. I never thought I'd see anything like that to a Sony ECM-51. I have one and fortunately, that's never happened to me.

Lucky! I’ve been trying to get my hands on one.
I now have a Sanyo “Stick Microphone” which telescopes. Hopefully it works, and will be a nice budget stand in, for the more rare telescoping microphone!

My goodness what a smart, funny, compelling show. You know, if it were brought back in 2021 -- in prime time, mind you -- it'd probably do great all over again.

It'd be hard to recreate the chemistry.

@@ts.elliot5870 I don't remember writing the original comment and I don't agree with myself: The world doesn't hang on the same hooks as it did in the 1970s and while some comedy is 100x better, a lot of the basic architecture of this show wouldn't fly now. And I don't just mean the risque lines and behaviour, either: The very concept of the thing wouldn't work, I don't think.

@@CinemaDemocratica I agree with this comment. I think the show was a product and a reflection of its time, and our world and culture have simply changed too much for this format to be successfully recreated today. But the original shows remain a fascinating and entertaining time capsule into how we dressed, spoke, thought, and behaved nearly 50 years ago.

It's funny how Gene always gives the audience trouble for trying to influence the contestants with their answers, and then this time he basically tells the contestant to choose Gary Burghoff as the answer since he's on the show. Big surprise when it wasn't the $500 answer.

The science fiction nerd in me thought of Logan's Run, though I knew it wouldn't match. Wikipedia shows that the movie didn't come out until the next year (1976), but there was a novel from 1967. Still, I'm not surprised it didn't come up.

At the quart mark of of season 1 the top 5 money givers are 1. Richard Dawson 35,500 dollars, 2. Brett Somers 12,000 dollars, 3. Charles Nelson Reilly 11,100 dollars, 4. Betty White/Clifton Davis 500. These are the only ones that have given away money so far this season. So far the season total is 59,600 dollars.

I've been noticing that Gene tells the departing contestants that they'll receive a GIFT (singular), while during the daytime show it's always GIFTS (plural). I wonder why that is? Seems odd to by stingy on the PM show when otherwise they're giving away more money (with 2 audience match questions and easier H/H questions), plus the gifts are provided by companies in exchange for a plug on the program (at the end), so those gifts don't really cost the producers anything.
