I have had that book for years. My late husband and i were going to do the 5 acres but he got sick with lung cancer and now i just dream of what could have been. Talking about it to my daughter so is looking to find a place we can start a homestead. May God help you guys grow your dreams.
Yes that is my favorite book! It is really great and the illustrations are really inspiring! This is what inspired me to start a homestead. Lots of great ideas in it! I also recommend it to people interested in homesteading.

Great video! I considered a cow too... but i went with dairy goats for the same reason but less work for me and less money over all. You keep on trucking! I have been at it for 12 years.
Mike this is GREAT advise for sure! I’ve tried to talk Kelly enter goats, but she is just not interested. Now I just gotta build some sort of barn structure or something.
I've seen that article, might have to find the book at the library! The 1 acre farm doesn't include septic... seems like most homesteading plans don't include aerobic septic which takes a lot of space. and you don't want to grow things in that space, except grass.
You don't check your boots for spiders before putting your feet in them? Jason, Big Bear Homestead, informed us about that book last year to help us understand what we could do on this homestead.
I am in NC. Haven't been able to do any gardening the past couple years thanks to having had a goat and no raised beds in my back yard at the time. Hopefully I can find some on clearance soon and get them for next year.
Farming being what it is, is not for a lazy person. You got a education first, lucky to find a supportive wife, have great kids and you are not under the thumb of a high power CEO that thinks his crap doesn't stink. I hope that it spreads like butter. This nation is headed off a cliff and our leaders are drumming up the band. I seen people work all their lives and be miserable. Others just grow old with family and smile at problems because food is on the table, rigs are paid for and the house is just more than a place that one ate at. Yet farming is not for everyone.
