I'm a hobby bass player and I play finger style like Cliff and Rob, but Jason was able to put that punchy pick sound to good use to create a crushing aggressive bass groove. He steals the show on quite a lot of Black Album tracks, in my opinion.
Totally agree. I use both fingers and pick depending on the song. But I actually think pickstyle works better on most metallica tracks. Jason is a really solid bassplayer. Very very underrated for sure.
30 years and still a banger. They had such a fantastic stage presence and were untouchable in the late 80s and early 90s. Can’t believe they’re still performing, saw them in Prague this year.

I dont know why I never hear such perfect drum sounds anymore... like its not about the talent of the drummers. more like about the sound that drums produce.
It most certainly does have to do with good dynamics and consistency from the drummer. If you don't at least have that much to work with, you're putting lipstick on a pig. But this sounds good because a production crew was recording each channel of the house mixer in order to mix and master the whole performance and add it to the proshot video afterwards, which is what we're seeing now. And of course, lars was still playing well at this time lol.
Whenever you have a drummer who founds a metal band you can expect it to be world class. These guys are in the Encyclopedia Britannia under "Metal Music".
I was at this show and it was the most powerful thing I'd ever experienced up to that point for a live show. Soundgarden had a great set but man, when Metallica came on it was like an explosion.
