What airline provides high quality AND low cost? I have flown with Avianca Airlines 8 times and I am giving my review on where I would rank them based on the cheap flights offered and overall flight experience offered.
Avianca Airlines is headquartered in Colombia and flies to 76 destinations.
We have flown all across Latin America including Central America and South America.
We originally decided to fly with Avianca Airlines when we found a cheap flight to El Salvador. They consistently offered many cheap flight deals which led us to fly with Avianca Airlines to Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras, and Costa Rica to name a few. In this video, I will give my full disclosure of my experience with Avianca Airlines to help you better decide if this is the best airline for your next trip!

Glad to see a more detailed review of Avianca. I’ve flown them many times domestically in Colombia and once from Bogota to Boston. For a low cost carrier I think they’re great. On domestic flights arriving in Bogota, I’ve had my bags waiting for me on multiple occasions. Speaks a lot to their efficiency. 👍🏻

I’m grateful to be able to say that I have been on many Avianca flights, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I have been on over 75 flights with them already. While I love a lot of things about the airline, their website has got to be one of the worst websites in the world of aviation!

Thanks for this video. We've been looking at Avianca options for this year. My husband and I flew Avianca to Curaçao in 2018, and we LOVED the experience... comfortable, reclining seats, entertainment and food were included in a basic ticket. We recently learned that, now, Avianca started the XS-XL options, which we didn't have before. Didn't know what to think about the new Avianca options, but your video has been very helpful and informative.

Hey there, the "L" size actually gets you one of the wider business class seats on some flights.

I've flown with Avianca almost 20 times for the past 6 months, all Intl flights and I can tell you, things will change. They're changing those seats for a very thin and non reclining ones and very little legroom. If you want reclining seats, Avianca Plus. More space? Avianca Premium. And let me tell you, for me, with is the only option available, flights were not cheap at all. Yes, they took me from A to B. Basically, just one flight was delayed. But, the new seats are a disaster, no engaging crew, rude airport staff (excluding the staff in Brazil, which is the only one who treated me nicely), customer service is practically no available and they're still using the pandemic excuse to serve the same snack you had in economy, in business class, in a almost 6 hour flight. And they'll start charging for it (once I got a chicken sandwich with bones inside of it). Believe me, on short flights, I really don't care. But longer flights on these new seats will be a nightmare (I've flown 3 times on those new seats on an hour flight and it was terrible).

@@juanpiss That's nice. But I decided not to fly with them anymore. The prices are either the same or even higher than the ones charged by Copa Airlines. So, I'm flying Copa now. And the connections are super easier at Tocumen that in Bogota. Avianca, for me, only if there's no other option.
@ yep i definitely agree with you there. the experience they offer is horrible for intl flights and there's way better airlines that bang for the buck. i only stick with avianca on the domestic side (although i've been considering LATAM these days too...)

I’m flying with avianca in the summer for the first time and this video was super informative! I am going to bring a carry-on and heard that they can be very strict on sizing, is that true? Also how was your experience checking in?
Glad it was helpful! You will have a great time. As I showed in the video I only travel with that book bag and they never said a word to me about it. Check in was fine we did it online and had no issues. Sometimes, if the country requires a covid test, you have to present it to receive your boarding pass at the airport
They’re so strict with sizing, almost to a comical extent. I was visiting my grandparents and wanted to bring a few things as well (they live in El Salvador) and my bag was just slightly too large, so I had to pay $120 for another checked bag. They didn’t even mention the maximum volume that our carry on bag could be when we were booking our flight.

I’m moved from the DMV area to Bogotá in 2021. I must say delta is better but I don’t feel like going through ATL. It’s a direct flight. Though I won’t purchase business class again 🤷🏽♀️
Thanks for sharing your experience! It's always interesting to hear about different airline experiences and flight routes. Delta is absolutely a "better airline" but is a lot more expensive as well. Not worth the money in my opinion
How much did avianca paid you? Avianca is famous for rescheduling and letting you know on the hour of departure. This has happened to me and family over half a dozen times. Traveling from Seattle to Armenia Colombia. We have stopped using avianca.

Horrible airline, we were assaulted at the airport with those luggage prices $100 per each suitcase but it was especially galling that they charged $120 for each carry on...staff rude and unknowledgeable...

What is the check in fee?
Do they have Wi-Fi @ the airports so I can check in without a charge?
Does a backpack count as a personal item?
I am not sure if there is a check in fee because we checked in on our phone before hand. It depends on the airport that you are checking into, they may have but may not. From my experience my book bag has counted every time as a personal item.
For work, I typically use United or their partners. Avianca is by the worst star alliance partner. Got duped coming to Colombia booking through United thinking it was a flight run by them. It was an Avianca run flight. Seats were so compact and uncomfortable with no recline. On the way back I paid for a premium(business) seat upgrade and it was the worst business class upgrade.
For what united charged for the flight, 4k round-trip, it's not worth it. The only positive is that I myself didn't pay for the flight with my own money.
I'm sorry to hear about your negative experience with Avianca. It's always frustrating when expectations don't meet reality. Hopefully, your future flights with United or their partners will be more pleasant!
I travel to Colombia, and last two years I have noticed tighter /more seats.
Avianca has international flights with very tight seats. The Avianca most Colombians know is no longer. The company has changed a lot from years ago. First class is non existent. You have to pay for everything. Not even water.

@@ChewsToExplore I am looking at prices and reading on Delta and will moat likely choose Delta or LATAM next time. I also tend to buy good before boarding because they charge for everything. I believe 7yrs ago I flew first class. Thats section is no longer. All seats are the same.
I have flown with them 4 times in the past months. The flights I was on they were incredibly Xenophobic towards people that spoke English. I speak Spanish but saw how horrible they were to those that don’t. The “meals” are cold gross nonsense, just fast or take snacks. Also, the people who work on the gates & planes act like they just came out of the military. Check-in line ( not arrival, not TSA, just check in) is two hours in Miami. One elderly lady who requested a wheelchair (had pre-requested) was practically in tears after they said we don’t have one available and shrugged their shoulders. It was painful watching her suffer for two hours. Horrible.
So sorry to hear about this, I had nothing but great experiences with them but everyone's experiences are different. I hope that these airlines get their stuff together soon!
Your comments are 100% on target. I have flown dozen of times with Avianca, pre and post pandemic, and i went from bad to worse to horrible to I am done. And I am done. I am happily paying equally or more on a different airline. A skin rash is an improvement from Avianca. Just the worst airline, food, rules, as well as ground and cabin crew. Ever.

Drinks (including water) and food is only provided to/from Colombia between europe y LAX. Other than that, not even a water. Even on 6-7 hour flights to Brazil and EZE 😅😀🤣. Oh and seats don’t redline and no padding. You were on the old style plane. They are now gone.
I completely agree with your sentiments and understand what you're saying. I personally love them because they are affordable and give you flexibility. I hate being charged for additional amenities that I do not care for. I have never flown to Europe or from LAX with avianca and have had snacks and drinks on all segments. Even the hour long flight. I flew with them over 15 times and have had good experiences on them all
Avianca used to be an excellent airline. Since it's now a low cost carrier, their quality has gone down hill. They are still expensive. You might as well fly jetblue instead. Jetblue offers you 1 free checked bag and free drinks and snacks
Thank you for your opinion. I cannot say what it was before as I never flew with them before they were a low cost carrier. But as a budget traveler I appreciate their low prices. I can bring my own snacks and I travel with a bookbag anyway. However, if you are going to check a bag I would definitely fly jet blue
I fly with Avianca last night from guayaquil to New York in Bussines class they only give you a snack during entire 7 hours flight the worst snack I haven’t eat and I travel a lot this will my last trip with this company and also the plane they used for this flight was airbus 319 very old plane the seat looks like coach class.

Avianca became a group of burglars. Be careful out there. The information provided is so confusing and customer service so bad, the hidden prices ended doubling our flight price.

Honest personal experience - I would not recommend Avianca. In fact, it's one of the worst airlines. They charge different fees on extra luggage ($70-$100, based on the date which I never heard of other airlines having this policy). Customer service on the phone were not helpful and are very nonchalant

I flew Avianca from LAX-BOG-UIO-BOG-LAX. Flights were all on time, but got tired of the same dry sandwich they served

Horrible experience. Tried to move the dates due to personal problems. They had me on hold for hours to end up at a desk that did never answer. The following day same story. I needed to change with my first carrier, AlaskaAir. I ended up loosing the ticket and flying all the way down from Anchorage to Buenos Aires with Alaska and their partner Látam on credit miles. Well, guess what: they dropped my entire round trip, so when I tried to board my way back flight in SaoPaulo the could not find me. Personnel at the airport were very concerned but unable to do anything. I ended up buying a ticket with United. Now I have been waiting since May 17 and calling often and always some vague answers. All I want is credit!
Pay the extra few bucks for an exit row seat. That route is one of the safest planes ever with one of the safest airlines, worth it.

With an actual person? I got an email that I can check in online and if I do it by the booths, it would be an extra charge for that service. I got the xs ticket. yeah hahaha... NO!!! i have done my flying and done with avianca. they spray when they stop the plane when getting to brasil from bogata. no food ever or drinks. they dont allow that you bring water that you bought in the airport, and say nothing until you go to enter the plane, then make you throw it away. they left out of bogata without myself and another passenger early to the clocks that were in the airport. so i'm done with avianca for good.

Sorry to say that my expirience with Avianca is not the best..the air line duplicate flying thickets on november 2023 it is april 2024 and i havent recive money reiburst they make the mistake and they say because th tickets are nonrei mbust .if they make the mistake they shoul pay money back to me

Don't ever fly with Avianca, it is a terrible airline, staff is rude and really a nightmare. Those bastards charged for each suitcase $100 and for each carry on $120...information in site vague and difficult to find..in regards to luggage prices..do your research and check reviews on better business bearau before giving this company your hard earned money!! Youll save a lot of headaches!!

Mi experiencia con Avianca es terrible, los asientos no se puede cambiar de posicion, no hay como cargar el celular, y ni siquiera te dan un vaso de agua en vuelos internacionales, si quieres algo lo tienes que comprar. Es muy mala y no la recomiendo
